How Were These Restaurants Selected?

I generally only recommend businesses where I have personally eaten a meal. However, there are few on this list, marked by an asterisk, that I have not personally vetted.

Some, like Cooper’s Hawk, have are widely known for their gluten free options. Others are listed on Find Me Gluten Free, and I felt were worth mentioning.

There may be restaurants you recommend that are not on this list. Please feel free to mention them in the comments, along with information on how they prevent cross contact.

While people like to talk smack about Flint, we have a lot of great things to offer. From science and art museums to auditoriums and more, there are so many reasons to visit Flint. One of the highlights of our downtown area is the Flint Farmers Market, which everyone should visit. Make sure to stop at Hills’ Cheese Stand!

Where is the Flint Farmers’ Market?

The Flint Farmer’s Market has been located in many places in its 150 year history. It moved to downtown Flint in 2014, and it wow located at 300 E. First St. Readers named it “America’s Most Loved Farmers’ Market” in 2011. In 2021, CNN named the Flint Farmers’ Market one of the Top 10 markets in the country.

The market offers ample parking and is located near the MTA Transit Station. It is situated close to the University of Michigan – Flint campus, and I- 475.

When is the Flint Farmers’ Market Open?

Regular market days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, year round. Some businesses are open on additional days, such as Steady Eddy’s and The Market Tap.

Other Market Features

The Flint Farmers Market building also houses the Hurley Children’s Center, which is open Monday thru Friday. They offer well child visits, vaccinations, nutrition counseling, post-operative follow up, and much more.

The market also offers a hall for rental, and a demo kitchen used to teach about healthy eating. In addition, there is a commercial kitchen that allows vendors to prep for their stalls.

What Vendors Offer Gluten Free Options?

I spent some time interviewing some of the inside food vendors at the Flint Farmers’ Market, asking about their gluten free options. I did not talk to outside market vendors, as they mostly sell produce. Below I share some of their answers with you.

Lori’s Clean Cuisine – 100% Gluten Free

1) Why did you choose to offer a completely gluten free menu?

I try to eat gluten-free most of the time because it makes me feel better all the way around. For me, it was hard to find true gluten-free/clean options that I wanted. That was the main reason I chose to be a farmers market gluten-free Vendor. Not to mention, there were very few options here at the market as well.

Another service, I take pride in, is offering to work with customer dietary restrictions. I can do this by substituting ingredients when needed. That’s also why I do not pre-make my bowls.

2) I know that everything is gluten free, and that you offer vegan options. Is your menu also completely free of any other allergens,such as soy?

I try very hard to avoid soy. Whenever I have a recipe that calls for soy sauce, I will always use Braggs amino liquids or coconut aminos

95% of what I do is also dairy free. All of my bowls are dairy free unless a customer chooses to add cheese or they choose one of my homemade dressings that has a Greek yogurt for a base. And the only freezer meal that contains dairy is my ranch chicken chili.

I also use all organic ingredients, as much as I possibly can. Non GMO, for sure. Lastly, I have a little “grocery store” filled with organic & gluten free products.

3) What steps do you take when preparing meals with other allergens, such as peanuts?

Since my number one seller is my Pad Thai Bowl (which contains peanuts) I can never say that I’m peanut free. However, if someone lets me know of a peanut allergy, everything is wiped down, new gloves and utensils are used, etc

4) Do you use oats or oat milk in anything you prepare?

I use organic gluten free sprouted oats when needed. My go to milks are unsweetened almond and unsweetened coconut milk

5) Do you have any desserts at your stall (I think i noticed other snacks like chips, etc.)

I just started selling my Chia Fruit Salsa, Pineapple Mango Pico de Gallo, sweet and spicy Mango Salsa and Rainbow Fruit Cups.

Late spring thru Fall I’ll have gourmet chocolate covered frozen bananas. Dairy free options are available too.

Sweet Peaces Vegan Bistro

At Sweet Peaces we offer a gluten free bakery, pantry staples, snacks, and daily soup. I follow a vegan diet, and opened Sweet Peaces to cater to people who do not eat animal products. We added more gluten free friendly items as demand grew over the past 10 years.

To avoid cross contact, we use tongs and gloves. We wipe down all prep areas thoroughly 3 times. Our bakery case contains only gluten free baked goods, which are prepared in a dedicated gluten free space.

Say Cheese 810

Instead of offering gluten free pasta, they allow you to build your own Cheesy Potato Bowl. While they do not have a separate dedicated gluten free prep space, they do take precautions for gluten free customers. When preparing a potato bowl, they change gloves, use separate utensils, and cook gluten free orders in a separate pan. They do state that gluten free items are cooked in a shared convection oven.

“Thank you for messaging me! We try our best to keep potatoes from cross contact of any other food source. Gloves and utensils are all new and clean for guests with a gluten allergy and only used once. The next bowl gets clean utensils.” There is no upcharge for gluten free orders.

Steady Eddy’s – Sit Down Restaurant

Gluten free options at Steady Eddy’s include omelettes and sandwiches made on gluten free bread. They do charge extra for gluten free bread, which is noted on the menu. My favorite sandwich is their veggie club.

They do not have a dedicated prep space for gluten free meals. However they do change their gloves and use separate utensils. They also have a separate toaster for gluten free bread. In addition, they offer many vegetarian options.

SOS Ice Cream (Scoopful of Sweetness)

We offer several ice cream flavors that contain no gluten. S.O.S. Ice Cream serves Hershey brand ice cream, plus a few flavors from an independent dairy. For those who can’t eat dairy, we also serve Hershey’s Oatmazing ice cream.

We have designated and sanitized scoops. We do not double scoop (which means we don’t scoop 2 different flavors with the same scoop). If a customer prefers, we will open a new container. We personally have gluten dietary restrictions in our family, and we want everyone to feel comfortable.

We have gluten free cookies, cones and starting soon we hope to carry homemade gluten free waffle cones. Homemade ice cream cakes are in the future as well.

We carry gluten free cake pops and can accommodate special orders as well.

We offer gluten free milk shakes, and clean/sanitize every blender after each milk shake is made.

Market Tap

I love visiting the Market Tap. Located upstairs at the Flint Farmer’s Market, they offer delicious adult beverages and often have live music. They have many hard cider options, either on tap or in cans. In addition, The Market Tap offers wine and spirits, including Michigan made Gypsy vodka.

They offer extensive outdoor patio seating, with a gorgeous view of downtown Flint. **Note, The Market Tap is also open on Friday, in addition to the regular Tuesday / Thursday/ Saturday schedule.

Other Flint & Genesee County Gluten Free Options

There are many neat place to visit in Genesee County. That includes the Capital Theater, Sloan Science Museum, the Flint Children’s Museum, and so much more. I’m a huge fan of the many murals around the Flint area.

As for gluten free dining options, Flint Crepe Co. offers gluten free crepes. The Social House on Fenton Rd offers many gluten free options, and Teta’s Grill in Flushing has an extensive gluten free menu. Brothers Brunch House in Burton makes amazing gluten free pancakes, and has a dedicated prep space.

Where is Ann Arbor?

Ann Arbor is a huge tourist destination in Michigan. Being the home of one of Michigan’s two Big Ten athletic teams, that brings a lot of visitors. In fact, the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitor’s Bureau estimates 5.6 million people visited there in 2014.

If we figure that 1% of the population has Celiac Disease, we could estimate that 50,000 people are in need of gluten-free dining options while in the area. So to help make your trip a little bit easier, here are my list of top Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions. (Plus two dedicated gluten free bakeries!)

Zingerman’s Roadhouse

My first mention in my Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions is Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Why? Because Zingerman’s is synonymous with the name Ann Arbor. The level of care that they take with their food prep is PHENOMENAL.

With dedicated fryers, toasters and waffle irons, it gives peace of mind while you’re enjoying your meal. I mean, look at those Bits & Grits Waffles?! I wish I had a plate of them right now. Or their a gluten-free fried chicken. Fried Chicken folks! While you’re in the area, make a pit stop at Plum Market across the street for Ethel’s Baking Company treats and other gluten-free goods.

Frita Batidos

I think I’m in love with Frita Batidos. Even though their “fritas” are served bunless for us gluten-free eaters, it may be the most delicious beef patty I’ve ever tasted. Did I mention that their beef is locally sourced?  Their signature fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer. That’s a huge thing for those of us with Celiac Disease.

Their batido milkshakes are wonderful. I could eat my weight in their cajeta, which is made-in-house salted goat’s milk caramel. Cover one of their sweet deep-fried plantains in the stuff and you’ll never want to leave. Add rum to their batidos and it truly is a happy hour. 

Condado Tacos

I’ve visited three different Condado Taco locations, and have had amazing meals every time. The majority of their menu is gluten free, and they have great protocols in place for dietary restrictions. Plus they’re a peanut free and nut free restaurant. Read my review. 

Juicy Kitchen

Ann Arbor is a place with many eclectic flavors and attention to healthy eats. Juicy Kitchen focuses fresh, local food with options for all kinds of eaters. Gluten-free? Check. Vegetarian? Check. Vegan? Yep, that’s covered too.

This delicious gluten-free stuffed French toast is cooked on a dedicated griddle with clean utensils and bowls. Cooks never share the egg wash from the regular French Toast. I highly suggest taking a bite with a bit of strawberry. 

Core Life Eatery

The Core Life Eatery chain recently opened a new location in Ann Arbor. Apart from the bread made off site, everything at Core Life contains no gluten ingredients. You can create your own bowl, or order one of their popular entrees. They also feature some pretty amazing beverages, including hot bone broth.

Anna’s House

This chain of restaurants originally started in Grand Rapids, and opened the Ann Arbor Anna’s House location in 2019. Gluten free meals are prepared in a dedicated prep space with dedicated utensils. While any meal here is stellar, their gluten free breakfast options are phenomenal. Pictured above is their breakfast lasagna.

Buddy’s Pizza

Buddy’s Pizza has many locations across Michigan, including one on Ann Arbor- Saline Rd. Read more about this business in my review.

Tasty Bakery

This 100% gluten free bakery serves up treats at their storefront, and at the Kerrytown Market. Customers also enjoy their treats at local Sweetwater coffee shop locations. To learn more about this unique confectionery, read my interview with Tasty Bakery.

Nirit’s Bakery

This Cottage Law business, Nirit’s Bakery, sells at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Everything they make is gluten, dairy, soy and nut free. 

Blank Slate Creamery

Blank Slate Creamery is an ice cream icon in Ann Arbor. They make all of their own ice cream, and many flavors are gluten free. Gluten Free flavors are clearly labeled. 

Blom Meadworks

Blom Meadworks sells naturally gluten free, alcoholic mead. They often have gluten free snack options, too. 

Other Ann Arbor Gluten-Free Restaurant Suggestions

1. Paesano’s
I’ve heard lots of great things about Paesano’s over the years. A friend recently had dinner there, and enjoyed gluten free pasta and even tiramisu! They even serve gluten free bread. I need to return to Ann Arbor just to visit this restaurant. 

2. Pilar’s Tamales
Pilar’s Tamales is a small Salvadoran restaurant on Liberty St. Corn flour comprises the base of almost every item on the menu. They do make a few non gluten-free desserts. I highly suggest the pupusas stuffed with cheese and loroco flower.

3.  Miki Japanese Restaurant
My friend Jen Burch, from Blue Bear Aware, highly recommended this Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant option to me. The biggest issue for any Asian restaurant is the presence of wheat in soy sauce. She reports that Miki offers gluten-free soy sauce for their dishes. If you get a chance to eat there safely, report back so I know!

4. Totoro

If you’re in the mood for sushi, Totoro has many gluten free sushi options. Gluten free options notated on menu.

5. Stadium Market
Stadium Market isn’t really a restaurant. It’s a party store with a functional kitchen, selling gluten-free pizza and breakfast sandwiches Again, Find Me Gluten-Free has many reviews about this place. I sought the advice of Valarie Mates, the moderator of the online Gluten-Free Ann Arbor Yahoo Group.

She said that it’s “awesome.” Stadium Market reportedly has many gluten-free beers, and sells a selection of Udi’s products. If you can attest to their steps for preventing cross-contact, please let me know!

6. Salt Springs Brewery

Salt Springs Brewery is located in Saline, which is just outside of Ann Arbor. While I have not personally eaten there, I’ve been told they have a dedicated gluten free fryer for fried fish. However, I would check with wait staff before ordering, just to make sure. 

Final Reminders about Eating Gluten Free in Ann Arbor

As always, I suggest calling restaurants prior to dining to ask about gluten free food preparation practices. This allows you to get the best information without staff being distracted during a food rush. Luckily, Ann Arbor is a forward thinking city and there are plenty of options. You can even eat safely at University of Michigan dining commons! And last I knew, there’s a gluten free stand at the football field.

Where is Detroit? 

Detroit is located in the southeast corner of Michigan. It is easily accessed via Interstate 75, which runs from Florida all the way to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. While one can get close to Detroit by air, the Detroit Metro Airport is actually located in Romulus. Therefore, one still must drive 25 minutes to get from the airport to downtown Detroit. The Detroit River separates the city from Windsor, in Ontario, Canada. 

What is Detroit Famous For? 

Once the capital city of Michigan from 1805-1847, Detroit is best known for its Motown music heritage and its sports teams. One can still visit the home of Henry Ford, a pioneer in the car industry. In fact, Detroit is still referred to as the Motor City, and is home to GM Headquarters.

Parking in Downtown Detroit

Parking in Downtown Detroit can be hectic. Parking garages are located downtown, and street side parking is also available. The Park Detroit website and app allow you to pay for parking online. The app also helps you find available parking. Also keep in mind that Detroit offers the People Mover, an elevated train that manuevers around Downtown Detroit. Even if you can’t park near your destination, you may be able to park in a structure and take the People Mover to where you want to go. 

Festivals and Attractions in Detroit

Detroit is home to the America’s Thanksgiving Parade, and many more holiday events. For the car enthusiast, visit the yearly Detroit Auto Show.  In addition, one will find many museums, theater and concert venues, including the Masonic Temple. Explore Belle Isle in the summer, and visit Campus Martius Park and Cadillac Square for year round activities. For a list of attractions to tour, check out the Visit Detroit website. 

Gluten Free Dining in Downtown Detroit

I’m sharing eight restaurants that offer gluten free options. Only one restaurant, Breadless is 100% gluten free. At the end of this list, I’ve included an embedded map so you can find these restaurants, easier. In addition, I’ve included an additional section of gluten free options in Metro Detroit, near the Detroit Zoo. Despite its name, the zoo is actually in Royal Oak, which is 20 minutes away.

Breadless (100% Gluten Free) 2760 Larned St, Detroit, MI 48207

Gluten Free Options:

Everything on the menu at Breadless is gluten free! They make sandwiches wrapped in greens. Choose from fun wraps like the Cardi B (Swiss chard + sliced chicken, pepper jack cheese, cilantro avocado sauce ) or the What the Kale (Dino kale + halal roasted chicken, cheese, bbq sauce).  Recently Breadless has operated food stalls at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, and Little Caesar’s Arena, home to the Pistons.

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

Because their menu contains no gluten, cross contact should not be possible. 

Frita Detroit 66 W Columbia St, Detroit, MI 48201

Gluten Free Options:

Gluten Free options include burgers without a bun, french fries made in separate hot oil, and their “Best Snack Ever.” The BSE is layered dish of Coconut Ginger Rice, black beans, melted muenster and cilantro lime salsa. And I admit, it really is the best. Their Batidos, or cuban mikshakes, are also gluten free.

Other options include “Beef Frita lighter on romaine, Chorizo Frita lighter on romaine, Chicken Verde Bowl, Tropical Salad with or without seared tofu, Twice Fried Ripe Plantains, Loaded Plantains, Crisped Plantains, ‘Best Snack Ever,” Shoestring Fries, Garlic Cilantro Fries, Black Beans, Coconut Ginger Rice, Tropical Slaw, Cinnamon Sugar Plantains, Batidos (w/the exception of the Batido de Trigo available occasionally as a special and the same applies to our housemade Paletas in the Spring/Summer months), Avocado Spread and Cilantro Lime Salsa.” 

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

Eve, the owner of Frita Batidos, recently shared with me their newly updated gluten free food order protocols. That includes at dedicated fryer, available at their Detroit and Ann Arbor location. They also have a kit in a zipped bag with dedicated gluten free cutting board, Chef’s knife, pot, pan, etc. (Again, available at both locations.)

“We do ask that guests with Celiac Disease let us know, because we take extra precautions with this condition. For guests with Celiac disease, we specify on our order ticket, do a verbal call to the expeditor, write it on a white board and have a dedicated person in the kitchen prepare and package the order from start to finish.” Both servers and kitchen staff are trained on what Celiac Disease is, and cross contact.

Folk Detroit 1701 Trumbull, Detroit, MI 48216 

Gluten Free Options:

“Our waffle and coffee cake are gluten free, and we have gluten free bread for sandwiches. Everything but our Crunchwrap and soba salad are able to be made gluten free. All of our gluten free options are marked on the menu along with dairy free, vegetarian, and vegan options.”

Cross Contact Prevention Procedures:

“Our space is small, so typically only one thing is being prepped at a time, and everything is cleaned and sanitized afterwards. We only have one waffle and it’s gluten free! For sandwiches, they are wrapped in foil before being put on the press. Gloves are worn to prevent any cross contact.”

Mudgie’s Deli 1413 Brooklyn St, Detroit, MI 48226

Gluten Free Options:

Mudgie’s offers gluten free bread for any of their signature sandwiches. Choose from sandwiches like the Dad (ham and cheese with yellow mustard), the Mudgie (beef brisket, turkey breakfast, veggie cream cheese, lettuce, onion and honey mustard), or their Turkey Trot (turkey, cheddar dried cranberries, apples, walnut, honey mustard and mixed greens), and more. Certain sandwiches cannot be made gluten free, due to the toppings used. 

“We offer gluten free bread for any of our sandwiches with the exception of the the vegan corned beef reuben. This is due to the fact that the vegan meat is made from vital wheat gluten and therefore cannot be made gluten free.”

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

“We do not have a dedicated gluten free prep space. However, if an allergy is mentioned we do make all necessary precautions like cleaning the grill and board to keep the order safe.”

Buddy’s Pizza 1565 Broadway St Detroit, MI 48226

Gluten Free Options: 

Buddy’s Pizza owns many restaurant locations across the state of Michigan. Detroit, which is the original home of the Detroit style pizza, offers gluten free pizza and salads. Please be advised that their gluten free crust contains dairy, and costs an additional $2. It is only available as a 4×4 square pizza. 

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

In the past, Buddy’s restaurants maintain a separate gluten free prep space for preparing gluten free pizzas. I am emailing them to confirm that this is still true. 

Slow’s BBQ 2138 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216

Gluten Free Options:

When looking at the Slow’s BBQ main menu, most dishes are marked with a lowercase “g”, which means gluten free options are available. (Sadly, no gluten free mac and cheese.) They also offer gluten free buns from Rumi’s Passion.

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

I have emailed the restaurant asking for further information. When they answer my questions, I will update this space. 

Texas De Brazil * 1000 Woodward Ave Ste 1B07A, Detroit, MI 48226 *

Gluten Free Options:

Texas De Brazil offers a Special Diets menu on their webpage. It appears that the majority of their meats and salad bar contain no gluten. Their Brazilian cheese bread (like Brazi Bites) contain no gluten, nor does their jasmine rice or Sweet Fried Bananas. Dessert options include Crème Brûlée and Brazilian Flan

Restaurants in the Detroit Suburbs / Detroit Zoo

While all the sports teams (Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings) stadiums are in downtown Detroit, the Detroit Zoo is located in Royal Oak, Michigan. Troy and Berkley are north of the Detroit Zoo, and Ferndale is just south of the zoo. In addition, Troy is home to the Somerset Collection mall. I have marked restaurants where I have not personally eaten with an asterisk. I am providing a link to each restaurant so you can ask the owners/ management more about their menu and food prep practices.

Columbus Gluten Free Lunch/ Dinner

Choripan Argentine Grill (100% Gluten Free) (Dublin, OH)

For many years, I’ve attended the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Celiac Disease Conference. It was during one of these trips that I visited Choripan Argentine Grill. EVERYTHING is gluten free, and delicious. Well known for their empanadas, they also serve fries, pizza, wings and more. 

Bi Bi Bop Asian Gril (100% gluten free) (Polaris Shopping Center)

This national fast casual chain serves Asian inspired cuisine, and all of it is gluten free. It’s a place where you can build your own bowl, or you can choose one of their suggestions. I love the purple rice and sweet potato starch noodles. 

True Food Kitchen (Easton Town Center)

I visited True Food Kitchen while I was in Texas, and loved every bite. Kitchen staff are well trained in gluten free protocols. I highly recommend the Charred Cauliflower, the Spaghetti Squash, and the Lasagna Bolognese. Cooper’s Hawk is also located in the Easton Town Center, and offers fantastic gluten free options. 

Bareburger (Short North Arts District)

True story. The first time I met Erica Dermer from Celiac and the Beast, we went to lunch at Bareburger. And I locked my keys in the car. Between that experience and their dedicated fryer, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Bareburger. If it’s on the menu, get the Duck bacon. Trust me on this. 

Condado Tacos (Polaris Shopping Center, Dublin + 5 more locations)

My friend Cindy from Vegetarian Mamma introduced me to Condado Tacos, and I LOVE it. (There are 6 locations in Michigan.) Most of the menu is gluten free. Vegetarian and gluten free options are clearly marked on the menu. Get the queso. It’s so good I could drink it. There’s a Condado Tacos near the Columbus Zoo, too. 

Cap City Diner (Dublin, Gahanna & Columbus/Grandview) 

While I’ve not personally been to Cap City Diner, it’s on my bucket list of Columbus gluten free dining options to visit. They have a dedicated fryer, with fries, chicken strips, fish and more on the menu. They even have gluten free desserts! I hear rave reviews about this place all the time. 

Molly Woo’s  (Polaris Shopping Center) 

Molly Woo’s, like Cap City Diner, is part of the Cameron Mitchell restaurant chain. Each restaurant in their chain takes excellent care of gluten free diners. One of their chefs came to the Nationwide Children’s conference and explained the precautions they take for all food allergies and dietary restrictions. I was impressed. Please note that reservations are recommended for all of their restaurants, because they’re so popular. 

Preston’s Burgers (North Market)

Preston’s Burgers is the sister busines to Bake Me Happy, which is a dedicated gluten free bakery. And yes, they have dedicated fryers and gluten free fried chicken. I’ve not been here yet, but hope to go the next time I’m in town!

Columbus Gluten Free Baked Goods/ Dessert

Bake Me Happy (Columbus & Dublin)

Bake Me Happy is a 100% dedicated gluten free bakery. I love their pop tarts, and their gluten free version of Zebra cakes. Truly, there’s nothing here that I haven’t loved. The staff are great, too! 

Cherbourg Bakery (Bexley/ East Columbus)

I’ve been a loyal Cherbourg Bakery fan for YEARS. Seriously. My first visit there was in 2013, and I visit this quaint dedicated gluten free and nut free bakery every time I’m in town. Technically it’s in Bexley, just barely on the outskirts of Columbus. (They also have a location near Cincinnati.) Cherbourg is down the street from Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, which I highly recommend visiting as well. 

Gluten Free Biscuits By Daddy-O

Everything at this Gluten Free Biscuit shop is gluten free. In addition to biscuits, they’be also added pizza to their menu. In addition to selling hot biscuits, you can also buy their mixes.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream (Downtown, Polaris, Dublin and 5 more locations)

If you’ve bought Jeni’s Ice Creams at your local grocery store, visiting them in person is even better. They have so many ice cream with gluten free inclusions, like their Gooey Butter Cake. Just let them know you have Celiac Disease, and they’ll scoop from a fresh tub. (Fun fact- Jeni’s Ice Cream Headquarters are in Columbus!)

Fully Gluten Free Bakehouse (formerly The Dipped Donut) – Delaware

Fully Gluten Free Bakehouse transitioned to a 100% gluten free bakery. My friend Cindy LOVES these donuts, and raves about them all the time. They even have dairy free options. It’s located in Delaware, which is north of Columbus. 

Places to Visit in Sylvania/ Toledo

If you’re traveling from Michigan, Sylvania will be on your way to Columbus. Don’t miss these great stops! There is also a BiBiBop Asian Grill in Toledo. 

Organic Bliss

Organic Bliss Deli and Bakery is a gluten free bakery and deli. They have great sandwiches, smoothies, and more. *Note- they do have non gluten free bread (made off premises) available for sandwiches, so be sure to clarify you want your sandwich made on gluten free bread. 

Natalie’s Cake Library

This new gluten free baker offers delicious gluten free desserts, and accommodates additional dietary restrictions. She also uses sprinkles made from natural dyes. She also has experience making dairy free, vegan, grain free and refined sugar free treats.

Erin Ann’s

As their Facebook page mentions, this business offers “consciously crafted ice cream, food, coffee & treats in the heart of Downtown Sylvania. Everything is dedicated gluten free, dye-free, soy- free & seed oil free with many other allergy accommodations.

Favorite Columbus Attractions to Visit

Third Coast Bakery

Third Coast Bakery is 100% dedicated gluten free and dairy free bakery needs to be on your itinerary. So many delicious options, and they offer coffee and tea as well. Added bonus for those who don’t live in the area? They ship nationwide!

Clean Crumbles

Clean Crumbles operates a dedicated gluten free and dairy free bakery. You’ll find them at 436 W Front St, Traverse City, MI, United States, 49684.

Taproot Cider

I’ve only eaten at Taproot Cider twice, but it left a lasting impression. I’m not the only one, because many people will tell you it’s their “go to” for gluten free dining. They believe in making their meals with local ingredients, so the menu changes.

MiddleCoast Brewing Company

MiddleCoast Brewing Company offers gluten free flatbread pizzas, cooked in a dedicated gluten free oven. They offer three flavors of flatbread – Margherita (mozzarella, tomato, basil); Supremo (mozzarella, pepperoni, mushroom, onion & green pepper); and Mean Green (mozzarella, pesto, chicken, spinach and artichoke hearts.) 

They also have dedicated gluten free fryers, and desserts. They recently added breakfast options.

Milk and Honey Cafe and Ice Creamery

This sweet shop makes their own ice cream from scratch, and has some unique flavors. The owner states “all our ice cream, vegan cream, sorbet, gelato and froyo is gluten free.” Because of this, they are one of the many Michigan Ice Cream parlors with gluten free options. 

Oryana Commnity Co-op

Am I the only one who likes to visit grocery stores while on vacation? Oryana Community Co-op has an amazing gluten free selection. They have two locations. The original (and my favorite) location is located downtown. Their newer location, located south of the downtown area, was previously a Lucky’s grocry store. (And they just started stocking Old World Gluten Free Pierogi!)

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

Fun fact- The Village used to be a mental health hospital. My mother-in-law even did a nursing rotation here. While there are restaurants on premises, I have not eaten at any of them. There is a coffee shop inside, Cuppa Joe, that sells Third Coast Bakery products. I enjoy the various shops in the building. In the summer, stop by the Farmer’s Market on Monday mornings from 2pm- 6pm.  (Not to be confused with the Saturday Sarah Hardy Farmer’s Market.)

Speaking of shopping, don’t skip the downtown Traverse City area along Front St. Lots of fun shops there, as well!

De Food Truck USA

This new food truck is 100% gluten free! They offer fried chicken, fish and fries. For those who are vegetarian, this truck also offers falafel, which are cooked in a separate fryer. Read my review. They recently moved their food truck to Mesick.

M-22 Dining and Shopping

Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate (Empire)

Grocer’s Daughter makes the most amazing glutetn free fudgesicles. I recommend buying one and enjoying it along the waterfront at Empire Beach, a short 3 min drive from the store.

Good Harbor Grill (Glen Arbor)

I discovered this restaurant on the Find Me Gluten Free app. I ordered a gluten free sandwich, and they stated that it’s prepared in a dedicated gluten free prep space. The sandwich was so big I had to save half for another day!

Cherry Republic (Glen Arbor)

I recommend stopping at Cherry Republic solely for the cherry wine that they make. They have a tasting room, where you can enjoy a flight. So fun!

The Front Porch (Suttons Bay)

I could have spent all day (and all my money) in this adorable store in Suttons Bay. The Front Porch has Michigan themed items, cookware, and so much more.

Other Traverse City Area Sights

There is a lot to see and do in the greater Traverse City area. I highly recommend traveling the M-22 loop, which is especially gorgeous in the fall. Inspiration Point in Arcadia offers a simply breathtaking view of the water. (Once you climb the stairs.) Of course, The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are a great place to visit as well. A drive up Mission Peninsula offers a view of the many vineyards and wineries, and leads you to Mission Point Lighhouse.

Flying, Gluten Free, To Houston

We made it! Our arrival to Houston was not not without it hiccups. However, it included some delicious homemade gluten free chicken and bacon alfredo pizza. In addition, we also sat next to the most charming man from Mumbai, currently working for Chrysler. We had a fascinating talk about air flight, car engines, and the traditions of India.

We experienced a delay between Dallas and Houston. But thankfully, there was Chick-Fil-A soft serve ice cream, which of course makes everything better. We finally arrived at our location, in Houston, somewhere around 1 a.m.

I suppose I should back up a bit to explain the reason behind my gluten free Houston vacation. One of my dearest friends live. My dear Sarah, (I’ve written about her and her family’s influence in my life, here) lives in Houston with her husband Amit. She and I lived as college roommates for 3 years, and she was one of the two bridesmaids in my wedding.  To be honest, as much as there is to do and see in Houston, I felt most excited just to be in their presence.

True Food Kitchen

After a good night sleep. we slowly roused. A late breakfast accompanied dog cuddles and a rousing time of “throw the ball for the dog.” I mean, does life get much better than that?

Our first day included a trip to True Food Kitchen. Both Amit and Sarah follow a vegetarian diet, and I really wanted to find a restaurant that fit both of our dietary restrictions. After some searching on Find Me Gluten Free, I discovered True Food Kitchen in the Galleria area.

I felt even better about dining there when friends In Johnna’s Kitchen, Casey the College Celiac, and Alysa Bajenaru all raved about it, too! We had a great meal, which I plan to share more about in depth, later.

Doesn’t Everyone Go Grocery Shopping?

After lunch, we ventured next door to Whole Foods to buy gluten free bread, and coffee for my husband. I was able to make toast in their toaster, thanks to my Toastabags! (Which I bought at a Menard’s at 7 in the morning, before we left.)

After that we made a trip to Sprouts Market, as I’ve heard friends RAVE about this store. Someone suggested that it’s owned by the same parent company that owns Fresh Thyme markets. (It is not.)

On recommendation from Mary Ellen of Milk N Honey Nutrition, I bought the chocolate covered rice cakes. And this my friends, is why I like to visit grocery stores in every new city I venture to- because they have things we don’t!

Next Stop – Indian Market!

While I looked forward to trying new restaurants in gluten free Houston, I REALLY looked forward to home cooking. Sarah’s husband Amit is from India, and a wonderful cook. We ventured to the Indian market, where Amit introduced me to Indian spices and bean flours.

We even ended up buying a 10 lb of gluten free chappati flour. Which, ironically never got opened while we were there and found it’s way into my luggage on the return flight. Suffice to say, I tried enough foods I want to replicate. So stay tuned for Indian foods.

San Jacinto Battle Memorial

While on vacation, I tried to not be on my phone all the time. We spent Sunday sight seeing. We ventured to the San Jacinto Battle Memorial and Museum. This monument stands 567 feet tall, just 12 feet higher than the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. (Because everything is better in Texas, right?) Like the Washington Monument, it also has a reflecting pool. You can take an elevator to the top, with quite a sight of the surrounding areas.

Pappasitos Cantina

What intrigued me most was the exterior of the building. Builders cut stone imprinted with shell fossils. We ended the evening with dinner at Pappasitos Cantina. While some on Find Me Gluten Free liked it, I didn’t. The environment was loud, and my waiter seemed unsure of himself. I did like the tableside guacamole preperation, especially because they were willing to leave out the cilantro! If you’re looking for a good gluten free Houston restaurant though, I would choose elsewhere.

Downtown Houston’s Underground Tunnels

The next day, my husband and I ventured into downtown Houston. Did you know the downtown buildings connect to one another through a series of underground tunnels? Also, these tunnels are not for merely walking. They house eateries, bank offices, card shops, and even a dentist.

SNAP Kitchen

We found Snap Kitchen while down there, a store that offers premade gluten free meals and snacks. All meals are organized by color- green for vegetarian, red for red meat, yellow for poultry and blue for fish. The staff answered all my curious questions. Downtown Houston’s MetroRail

After exploring the tunnels, we rose to the city surface in search of good coffee. Downtown we found Boomtown Coffee, which my husband enjoyed. The staff enthusiastically offered suggestions of sights to see, and informed us on how to use the MetroRail system. WHICH IS FANTASTIC! For $1.25, you can use the rail system for 3 hours, with unlimited stops. We hopped on the train and rode to the Cullen Sculpture Garden.

My husband loves displays of public art. This public outdoor art display did not disappoint. It includes sculptures from Rodin, Matisse, and more. Of most intriguing note to me is the Cloud Column, made by the same sculptor who made Cloud Gate (The Bean) in downtown Chicago. I love finding pieces that connect me to other places and time in my life. After that, we made a quick stop at the Museum of Fine Arts for a potty break, then off to find lunch.

Your Pie

After some public transportation confusion, we finally ended up at Your Pie on Main St. Ironically, after taking this picture, I realized I previously visited one in Murfreesboro. This gluten free Houston eatery excelled compared to the TN location.

Staff created my pizza in back, in a clean prep area, with fresh toppings. They cooked my gluten free pizza on a metal pan to prevent cross contact with other pizzas. They also offered gluten free hard cider, as well as red and white wines. I passed, but my husband enjoyed one of the many local, Texas beers they had on top. Huge kudos to the staff there!

Bella Green – The Heights

First let me preface this section by stating I felt safe eating at this establishment. Based on reviews from locals and those abroad, as well as questions I asked of wait staff, I felt content in getting a good gluten free Houston meal. However, I will say that the staff weren’t the warmest. The head cashier was abrupt, another worker glared at us while we ate, and our burgers were just ok.

Everyone has an off day, including me. Just hoping that the reception (and the burgers) were warmer for others. I will say I was pleased that they were willing to do half sweet potato fries, and half regular fries with my order. To be honest, the sweet potato fries were the best part of my meal.

Houston Gluten Free Bakeries

While we were there in 2019, we visited a gluten free bakery called More Than Just Vanilla. However, it is no longer in business. A quick search on Find Me Gluten Free suggests Leven Bakery & Cafe, as well as Bare Bakery. Renia Butler of Black Allergy Mama recommends Awesome Bites Co. We ended that night, back at Sarah’s home. She made paella, and we ate around the table in friendship. There’s so much to see in this world, and in Houston. Meanwhile, I’m content with lazy days in pajamas, surrounded with friends who are like family. Now that we are back in the frozen tundra of Michigan, I wish our time there could have been longer. But alas, time moves on!

Where is Grand Rapids?

For those unfamiliar with the city, Grand Rapids is located about 35 miles east of Lake Michigan. The Grand River flows through the downtown area, which naturally separates it into east and west sections. Interstate 196 and US 131 also intersect downtown, which separate the city into north and south sections. Grand Rapids is north of Kalamazoo, east of Muskegon and west of Lansing. Grand Rapids is home to Gerald R Ford International airport.

What is Grand Rapids Famous For?

Grand Rapids is popular for so many reasons. Home to furniture manufacturing and Meijer stores, it has a vibrant economy and is also rich in arts and culture. Every year people visit the ArtPrize competition and LaughFest, in honor of the late Gilda Radner.

What Attractions Should I Visit?

With so many great places, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I always recommend John Ball Zoo, with or without kids. Frederik Meijer Gardens on East Beltline is also a “must visit” location. Both the indoor and outside attractions are amazing. The Grand Rapids Public Museum is one of my favorites, and I still need to visit the Gerald R Ford Presidential Museum. Don’t miss the Grand Rapids Childrens’s Museum, also located downtown!

Love baseball? Catch a West Michigan White Caps minor league game. They offer gluten free concessions, too! Visit Van Andel Arena for Griffins hockey, and music concerts. Make sure to add Fulton Street Farmers Market and the Downtown Market to your itinerary, also. I love Bridge Street Market and Harvest Health for delicious gluten free groceries. Why Does Grand Rapids Offer So Many Gluten Free Options?

At one point, there was a strong and active Celiac Disease Support Group in the area. They helped educate physicians, hospital systems, grocery stores and restaurants on gluten free dining. Support group leaders visited restaurants to inspect their facilities and teach them how to minimize the risk of cross contact. The city also had a gluten free food fair.

While the group and the fair no longer exist, the prelimary work they did made a lasting impact. Area restaurants realized that the more they accommodated those with dining restrictions, the more people would frequent their business. In addition, as awareness of Celiac Disease continues to grow, so do available dining options.

Where Should I Eat?

I developed the list below with the help from those in the former support group. In full disclosure, I have not eaten at all of these locations. I placed an asterisk at restaurants where I have personally dined. In addition, please remember that food preparation methods can change, so ALWAYS ask questions before ordering. This list is not exhaustive, but compiled with the help of those who know to ask questions about cross contact, including shared fryers, etc.

Another comment in regards to “where.” I grew up in Lansing, and not Grand Rapids. In assigning eateries to areas, I started with the downtown area, and grouped them into areas, due to their geographic location to the downtown area. BiBiBop Asian Grill made big news in 2021 when they changed their menu to be 100% gluten free. There are locations across the midwest, with new locations opening in E. Lansing and Canton, MI. There are 12 BiBiBop Asian Grill locations in Chicago.

Chesa’s Bistro and Bar

Chesa’s  Bistro and Bar is a 100% gluten free soul food restaurant. On their menu you’ll find ribs, grits, peach cobbler, Jambalaya, beignet waffles and more.

Again, I have not eaten at this establishment. However, I hear great reviews from many. Wildfire is part of the Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant chain. Many I know have stated that many of the restaurants in this chain have undergone training on preventing cross contact with gluten. 

Do Rite Donuts

This is the photo that blew up my Instagram account. That’s because there’s nothing quite like a Do Rite Donut. Gluten Free donuts are prepared in dedicated fryers, and stored in their own separate cases. They are first come, first serve though. So I recommend getting to one of their locations early!

It’s taken me a few trips to Chicago to finally make it here, and it was everything I dreamed it would be. Egg Harbor Cafe has multiple locations throughout Chicagoland. They have an extensive gluten-free menu and serve Sweet Ali’s pancakes and cinnamon rolls.

Speaking of Sweet Ali’s, you gotta visit this place. (Check out my photos from my 2017 visit!) I met them years ago at the Nourished Festival, and I’ve been in love with them ever since. Their decorated cookies look amazing and their cinnamon rolls are to DIE for! They make vegan items as well, for those avoiding egg and dairy.

Weber Grill (also available in downtown Chicago)

I ate at Weber Grill with friends a few years ago during a special event. They offered us many options, all tasting wonderful. What impressed me most was the manager and his openness to recommendations and suggestions. I would definitely eat here again.

Roti Mediterranean Grill

I first fell in love with Roti in 2014. They offer delicious gluten-free Mediterranean food! This fast casual restaurant is like Chipotle, only with chicken kabobs instead of burritos. They also serve gluten-free falafel. Locations include Chicago and Washington D.C., with new locations in the works.

Ben J Yehuda

I discovered Ben J Yehuda through the Find Me Gluten Free app. As always, I asked additional questions to verify that they change gloves and use a dedicated gluten free fryer. Similar in concept to Roti, they offer shawarma, falafel, French fries and more.

“Meacham Mile” 

As you drive down Meacham in Schaumburg, lots of restaurants exist with gluten free options. Use the Find Me Gluten Free app to search for local restaurants. However, always remember to ask your own questions about food preparations before dining.

Must-Visit Chicago Landmarks

Millenium Park
Millenium Park is home to sculptures, water fountains, gardens, outdoor pavilions and more. The most famous attraction is probably the Cloud Gate. It’s often referred to as the Bean, because it’s shaped like a kidney bean. This polished stainless steel structure reflects the city skyline.

True story, the person at the edge of the photo in the blue shirt is my husband. He was taking a picture of a family on vacation, using their camera. When he was done, we realized they lived in a city less than 20 miles from our house in Flint. Small world, huh?

The Chicago Theater
Confession – I’m a NPR junkie. My favorite show is Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, and it is taped weekly at the Chase Auditorium. The theater has many other shows that you can take in. From musicians to comedians and more, you’ll find something to enjoy.

Of course there are many other famous places to visit. Shedd’s Aquarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, Navy Pier, and so much more. You can take in a baseball game at Wrigley Field (which serves Gilbert’s gluten-free sausages!) or simply take in the beauty of the coastline.

Travel and Parking

As downtown Chicago is a busy place, I HIGHLY suggest getting a Ventra Card. This multi-use transportation card gets you on all the bus lines and some of the trains. The rates are very affordable and it makes getting around the city SO much easier. I also recommend using the SpotHero app to find close and affordable parking.

If you travel often, I recommend investing in an I-Pass. It’s a transponder that helps you pay tolls, as you drive. The transponder also works with toll systems in 15 other states, such as Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, New York and New York. The money you add to your I Pass account doesn’t diminish over time.
