Growing up in Lansing, our family made a yearly trip to Uncle John’s Cider Mill. The location has grown greatly since I was a child. However, they don’t offer gluten free donuts. (They do make some amazing hard cider, tho!) Now, I travel to the east side of the state, to support one of these Michigan businesses that offer gluten free cider mill donuts.

For many years, Gluten Free Specialties in Rochester supplied gluten free donuts to just Yates Cider Mill and Franklin Cider Mill. Then, in 2019, many Michigan cider mills responded to customer demand, and partnered with Gluten Free Specialties. If you want a cider mill in your area to carry gluten free donuts, speak up and tell them about gluten free bakers in your area!

Spicer Orchards Gluten Free Donuts – Made In House (shared facility)

Starting in 2026, Spicer Orchards will be making their own gluten free donuts. (Vegan donuts will still be available from Mama Alana’s Pantry.) Here are the details

• Their gluten free donuts are made a designated area with designated utensils, fryer, washing area, and sanitizer.
• There is space in between the gluten free station and the wheat based donut station. In addition, the sections are separated with a floor to ceiling curtain. However, we are not a 100% gluten free facility.
• The prep area and donuts are tested for gluten using GlutenTox Pro.
• Spicer’s Orchards makes their gluten free donuts from a certified gluten free mix.
• The gluten free donuts contain dairy, egg, and soy.

Parshallville launched gluten friendly donuts in 2025. They are made in the same facility as donuts made with wheat flour. However, they are taking the following precautions.

Not finding any cider mills near you with gluten free options? There are two gluten free brands which makes delicious, commercially available gluten free donuts. Both Katz and Kinnikinnick donuts contain no dairy, nuts or soy. While you can order them online, you can also find Katz and Kinnikinnick donuts in your local stores. Homemade Gluten Free Donuts

Of course, one can always make their own gluten free donuts, and take them to the cider mill. My two ingredient gluten free pumpkin donuts are truly a hit this time of year. Depending on which cake mix you use, these can easily be made free from the top 8 allergens. These chocolate dipped gluten free cake donuts are also free from the top 8 allergens.

Where is Republica Gastropub?

Republica Gastropub is located in the quaint town of Berkley, Michigan. Berkley is situated approximately 20 miles north west of Detroit and 3 miles northwest of Royal Oak. It’s less than a 10 minute drive from the Detroit Zoo.

Why does Republica choose to offer gluten free items? 

We are a family operated business, open since 2013. My mom and business partner lives with Celiac Disease. When we opened 11 years ago, there were very few restaurants offering gluten free options. (Other than a salad) We decided to be intentional in offering a wider selection of gluten free options on our made from scratch menu.

Is your menu also free from other allergens? I.e, nut free, dairy free

We maintain a peanut free kitchen. Many of our menu items can be made free from other allergens, by request. However, please understand that we do stock dairy, eggs, fish, etc in our kitchen.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/ cooking?

We cook in butter and olive oil. Our dedicated gluten free fryer uses beef tallow and our regular fryer uses vegetable oil. We prepare all of our salad dressings with extra virgin olive oil, with the exception of our greek dressing. This classic recipe uses vegetable oil. 

Do you have a separate gluten free menu? 

We list all of our gluten free options on our main menu, except for our secret gluten free fish and chips. Our menu also highlights vegetarian and low glycemic index options, such as our Tomato Burrata Flatbread, which is also gluten free.

Do you have a separate prep area for gluten free dishes? 

We are not a certified gluten free kitchen. However, we have a dedicated gluten free fryer as well as a dedicated area to toast gluten free buns. All of our items cooked on the flat top are gluten free until they hit the bread, leaving little opportunity for cross contact.

Our salad area is completely gluten free at all times. Our food is all cooked to order in its own pan and washed between each use. We do use great care when cooking our gluten free menu options.

What steps do you take to prevent cross contact in the kitchen? 

Do staff change gloves for gluten free orders?

Yes, our staff knows to change gloves between all orders. 

Separate cutting boards/ knives/ utensils

Staff wash and sanitize cutting boars and knives between each use. 

Separate pots for boiling water?

We do not offer gluten pasta or any gluten items that require boiled water.

Dedicated gluten free fryer?

Yes, we maintain a dedicated gluten free fryer. This means that you can enjoy our award winning Platos Potatoes. These french fries are topped with feta, lemon and oregano.

Dedicated toaster/ waffle maker?

There is no toaster or waffle maker in our restaurant.

Are orders cooked in a clean pan vs shared griddle top? 

We prepare all gluten free orders in clean pans and/ or on a dedicated gluten free flat top. 

What training do your staff receive on preparing Gluten Free meals safely?

We require all staff to be Serve Safe Trained. “The ServSafe Food Handler program is comprehensive and provides training on the following Intended Learning Outcomes: Basic Food Safety, Personal Hygiene, Cross-Contamination and Allergens, Time & Temperature, & Cleaning and Sanitation”

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a GF meal?

We do not serve gluten free meals on special plates, nor we use use allergen picks.

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item?

By far, customers repeatedly order Ma’s Meatloaf, which is gluten free. We serve it with mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and top our meatloaf with caramelized onions. We do NOT use oats in our meatloaf.

Does Republica offer gluten free desserts?

Yes, we offer gluten free desserts at Republica. Our desserts are all made in house by my mom. We rotate our desserts daily and frequently offer gluten free options. We also offer custom orders should you need a dessert for a special occasion. 

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?

We always have gluten free items on the bar menu. Our cider & wine is always gluten free. We occasionally offer a gluten free beer. 

Do you have parking on premises?

There is public parking in the back of the restaurant. In addition, there is plenty of FREE street parking in downtown Berkley.

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside?

Yes and yes! We love dogs.

Do You Offer Any Weekly Specials?

Every Tuesday, kids 12 and under receive a FREE MEAL, with purchase of one adult entree. On Wednesdays, we offer half off all bottles of wine.

We offer Happy Hour every Mon & Tues from 4-6 pm and Wed – Fri from 1-6 pm. During this time we offer $9 Happy Burgers. (Gluten Free Buns are $3 extra.)

I remember when I was newly diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Ice cream was my best friend. Since I could no longer eat sweet baked goods, I told myself I was allowed to eat as much ice cream as I wanted.

That being said, we need to remember that not all ice creams are created equal, and some are unsafe. There’s the obvious culprits that contain baked goods.

You also need to watch out for cross-contact and even some soft serve ice creams and frozen yogurts that contain gluten. Visit one of these places that offer great Michigan gluten free ice cream options!

How To Order Ice Cream When You Eat Gluten Free

The Gluten Intolerance Group wrote an article about what concerns people with Celiac Disease should have about buying ice cream.

“When ordering from any food business including ice cream shops, ask questions. If a business serves cones that are not gluten-free, simply requesting a scoop in a dish instead of a cone does not guarantee safety.

When previous cone orders were filled, the same utensil used to serve your ice cream could have been used to push a scoop onto a cone, possibly resulting in cross-contact with the gluten-containing cone, transferring cone crumbs into the ice cream container. 

When in doubt, be vocal about a need for assurance of a totally gluten-free product. 

Ask if there is an ice cream container that has not yet been opened that could be used, along with clean serving utensils, to guarantee that your scoop is free of cross-contact with gluten. 

How is this Gluten Free Ice Cream Parlor List Organized?

In short, I’m terrible at geography. However, I’ve tried to list businesses in order of similar area.

Although Frosty Boy is listed first, as I think it has so many gluten free options that you won’t find elsewhere in the states.

Also, I don’t currently have any stand out locations in the Upper Peninsula, although I’m sure there are safe places to get ice cream up there.

West Michigan Gluten Free Ice Cream Options

Frosty Boy (Grand Rapids Plainfield Ave ONLY!!)

Frosty Boy was a Grand Rapids tradition until 2005. It sat vacant for at least a decade until owners Kyle and Alyssa Naumann gave it new life.

They offer a variety of hard scoop ice cream, including flavors from Ashby’s, Country Dairy, Mooville, and Homemade. But what most of us are excited about are their soft serve options, including dairy free options as well.

What sets them apart are the EXTRAS. You can get your ice cream in a homemade gluten-free waffle cone, your flurry made with gluten-free cookies from Kind Crumbs, or even get VEGAN soft serve!

Love’s Ice Cream – Grand Rapids

Located inside the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, Love’s Ice Cream makes an amazing assortment of gluten free flavors. Including S’mores*! I

n fact, only 7 of their flavors are not gluten free. Visit their scoop shop in the market to try all of their flavors. (You can also find their pints in various stores across Michigan.)

*Some of the baked good items in Love’s Ice Cream flavors are made with oats. Make sure to ask about ingredients if you are oat intolerant.

Tastefull Vegan Frozen Desserts – Wyoming, MI

Tastefull Vegan just opened (2022) in Wyoming, Michigan. Desserts are “free of dairy, nuts, soy, gluten, eggs, and refined sugar.”

“Our soft serve is made with a non-dairy milk that has a pea protein base. We use oat milk for milkshakes, but can offer an alternative non dairy milk.”

Frosty Cove – Muskegon

I heard about Frosty Cove through my connections with the Muskegon Celiac Support Group.

Frosty Cove proudly serves Hudsonville Ice Cream, which has over 20 flavors that are gluten-free.

Frosty Cove makes sure to always have gluten-free cones on hand as well. I hear that their servings are large – almost as big as your head!

Oliver Gramm Ice Cream – Caledonia

Oliver Gramm Ice Cream opened in Caledonia in May of 2025. They make their own ice cream, one small batch at a time. I learned about this business from a follower, so I reached out to the owner for more information.

Yes, we offer a list of gluten free ice cream flavors. Our flavors rotate often, but we list our Vegan/DF/GF flavors in a separate list on our menu and in our daily flavor updates in our social media stories.

Many of our regular flavors are also gluten free and our staff can help customers choose one that works for their needs. However, the exclusively DF/GF flavors are kept in a separate freezer away from the others.

I was told they will scoop out of a fresh tub if requested. But be mindful that they make their ice cream in small batches, so an unopened tub may not always be available.

Other gluten free serving precautions include changing gloves, using a separate scoop, ad maintaining a separate dip cabinet for dairy-free/gluten-free flavors.

For those who are dairy free: “We make most of our dairy free flavors with a pea protein base, but a couple flavors are made with a coconut base when it suits the flavor better (example : Toasted Coconut Macaroon).” They do not offer Dole Whip.

They do not offer gluten free cones.

Lastly, this is what the owners of Oliver Gramm would like to share with my followers-

We make all our ice cream ourselves in house so we know every ingredient that goes into it. All our ice creams are free of artificial dyes and flavors. We make only hard scoop ice cream (no soft serve).

Our df/gf flavors are kept separate from our other flavors with a designated freezer and fresh scoops to avoid any cross-contamination. These are the safest options for guests who must avoid gluten.

However, a large selection of our dairy flavors are often gluten-free as well unless they have a pie/cookie/cheesecake element listed in the flavor name (Cookies & Cream, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, etc).

We are always happy to help our guests select a flavor that would be safe for them based on the severity of their dietary restrictions and take precautions such as opening a fresh tub/using a new scoop, etc.

Southwest MI Gluten Free Ice Cream Options

Plainwell Ice Cream – Plainwell, MI

Plainwell Ice Cream makes all of their 50+ ice cream flavors by hand since 1978. (That’s the year I was born!) You can find a list of their gluten free flavors on their website, under Allergen Info.

For gluten free customers, they are willing to scoop from a fresh tub, with clean scoops and isolated spoons.

They state that if you let them know you eat gluten free, they’ll be happy to accommodate you! (Sadly, they do not offer gluten free cones.)

As for dairy free options, they offer hard scoop Dairy free chocolate, Raspberry Choc Chip, and Lemon Blueberry Swirl, which are all gluten free.

I do not know what dairy free base they use (oat, almond, etc) they use for their dairy free ice cream.

Mikey’s Ice Cream – Watervliet

Per their Facebook page, “at Mikey’s Ice Cream we make Premium, small batch, craft made Ice Cream using only the highest quality ingredients all made In House! We also make Premium Dairy Free Gelato, Sorbet, and Italian Ice.”

They maintain a list of gluten free ice cream flavors. They will scoop out of a fresh tub is requested.

They also shared this about their cross contact prevention procedures – “We change gloves, use a separate Container for Gluten Free Cones, and a one Time Use Scooper until cleaned and sanitized. We NEVER go from one flavor to another without a clean scooper.”

Gluten Free Ice Cream is never exposed to inclusions containing gluten. All surfaces and appliences when working with gluten free ice cream and cones have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before each use.

As for dairy free options, all dairy free options are also Gluten Free. Dairy free options are made using Almond or Oat Milk. Our sorbet is made from Fruit Juice.

They do offer house made gluten free waffle cones, which do not contain oat flour. They did state that they do NOT have a dedicated iron for their gluten free waffle cones.

***NOTE – They do make their own cookies on premises. I asked if dough is mixed, prepared and baked in a different room than where the ice cream is stored. This was their response.

“We do not have a big enough facility to store our ice cream in a separate room from where we handle ingredients that contain gluten. However, we are very thorough about keeping our gluten free products separate from those with gluten.

We never go from preparing products with gluten to preparing gluten-free products without washing and sanitizing the area/appliance. We do everything we can to ensure the safety of our Gluten Sensitive Customers, within our ability as a small family owned business.”

Neon Moon Gelato – Union Pier

Neon Moon Gelato in Union Pier has LOTS of gluten free ice cream options. “All of our gelato and sorbetto is marked for an allergen-friendly experience. We have 33 flavors in our shop at anytime and rotate between 35-40 flavors per season. About 20-25 are gluten-free.”

They are willing to scoop out of a fresh tub if a customer requests it. “If requested we will change gloves and use a sanitized scooper. All of our gluten products are in a dedicated gluten and nut case.”

“We dedicate our scoopers and shake containers as well, but we can always use a fresh sanitized scooper gloves and container. Our baked goods are either individually wrapped or in a dedicated cake case separate from the non GF items.”

They offer Gluten Free Sugar Cones, Gluten Free Cake Cones, and homemade Gluten Free Waffle Cones,. The gluten free waffle cones are made on a dedicated waffle iron. They do contain oat flour.

For those who follow a dairy free diet, their sorbettos are dairy free and gluten free. They have a fruit base. Their vegan gelato has a cashew base.

They stated the following – “We are not a gluten free facility but we do our best to be transparent about allergen ingredients. We ask that customers are kind and patient with our young staff who may not be as knowledgeable as the owners. We are always one question and answer away from a safe and happy experience for everyone!

In addition, Neon Moon Gelato sells gluten free baked goods from a 100% gluten free bakery in Chicago called Defloured Bakery. They also use Defloured baked goods for our sundaes and a la mode items.

They also work very hard to source gluten-free and vegan (when possible) toppings, snacks, and candy items for their retail shelves. Finally, they’re launching a (mostly) gluten-free breakfast menu, available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, which includes gluten free Belgian Waffles.

Calhoun County Gluten Free Ice Cream Options

True North – Marshall & Battle Creek

True North in Marshall makes their own ice cream, and has been since 2021. They are also known for their “grown up flavors,” which include alcohol.

Their flavor board is constantly changing, however we have many gluten free flavors, often with over two dozen gluten free flavors. They are willing to scoop out a fresh tub if a customer requests it.

They do offer gluten free cones, including gluten free waffle cones that they make in house. The gluten free waffle cones are made on a dedicated iron. They do contain oat flour.

For those who must follow a dairy free diet, they do offer dairy free ice cream options. They are made from a coconut cream and/ or tapioca cream base.

Central MI Gluten Free Ice Cream Options

MSU Dairy Store – East Lansing

Michigan State University and dairy cows have a long history. MSU was known as “Agriculture College of the State of Michigan” in 1855, and they’ve been a leader in teaching agriculture ever since. Dairy cows are housed on campus and milked daily, which visitors can observe for free.

The milk is then transported to the dairy plant to be turned into cheese and delicious ice cream. There’s even an observation deck to watch the dairy process. While The MSU Dairy Store does not have gluten-free cones, they are always willing to changes gloves and open a fresh tub of ice cream to prevent cross-contact.

Kirby’s 1892 Ice Cream – Corunna

Kirby’s 1892 Facebook pages states they “Serve MOO-ville ice cream in a quaint little one room school house build in 1892.” I LOVE seeing one room schools houses repurposed! And after living in the Flint area for over 20 years, I don’t know how I missed this place.

For gluten free customers, they do keep a list of gluten free flavors, and they’re willing to scoop from a fresh tub if they have that flavor in stock. They will also change gloves if requested.

They do offer gluten free waffle cones that are made in house. However they are not made on a dedicated waffle iron. For those who are oat intolerant, please know that they are made with oat flour.

For those avoiding dairy, they offer an oat based chocolate ice cream.

Gluten Free Ice Cream Options in the Thumb

Bailey’s Ice Cream & Smokehouse – Metamora & Ortonville

Bailey’s Ice Cream and Smokehouse maintains a list of gluten free ice cream flavors. In addition, they also offer gluten free cake cones.

They stated that they will scoop out of a fresh tub if requested. They also shared this information with me.

“With an allergy, our staff change their gloves and then have a two-step process in which they use to clean ice cream scoop. The first one to remove the top layer of ice cream and the second one to scoop underneath to prevent cross-contamination.

For those with dairy restrictions, they carry an oat milk based chocolate chunk ice cream, and a black raspberry pomegranate sorbet that is both dairy free and gluten-free.

While their Metamora location does not offer Dole Whip, it is available at their Ortonville location.

I found Dairy Twist Cafe when I wrote about the best places to get vegan ice cream in Michigan. Turns out this place is great for Michigan gluten free ice cream options as well!

All of their dairy-free ice creams are gluten free. In addition, Dairy Twist Cafe has gluten free cones too! They have LOTS of options, too. They were awarded Oakland County’s Largest Ice Cream Store.

Washtenaw & Livingston Co. Gluten Free Ice Cream Options

Blank Slate Creamery – Ann Arbor and Brighton

This iconic Michigan ice cream parlor opened in Ann Arbor in 2014. In 2021, Blank Slate Creamery expanded to a second location in downtown Brighton. Blank Slate Creamery makes their own ice cream, using Michigan’s own Guernsey Dairy.

They offer dairy free options as well! They have a separate case with seven flavors of non-dairy ice creams and sorbets. The gluten free status of all their flavors is clearly marked on the menu, and they will open a fresh tub from the back, if you tell the you have Celiac Disease.

Milkshake Factory – Ann Arbor

The Milkshake Factory offers several flavors of gluten free milkshakes. For those with Celiac Disease they have a separate allergen area. Only a manager trained in allergy and cross-contamination processes makes those shakes. It is thoroughly cleaned down between every shake.

Jackie’s Custard Co. On Millpond – Brighton

As the Explore Brighton Howell Area website states, their “specialty is the creamy custard, with rotating flavors packed with deliciousness.”

Their custard base is gluten free. In addition they “use use all gluten free Oreos and several other gluten free ingredients.”

Staff are willing to scoop out of a fresh tub if asked. They use gloves and have a separate cabinet for gluten free flavors. They can create most flavors gluten free because they create their custard by hand.

They offer gluten free sugar cones and gluten free cake cones. For dairy free customers, they offer popsicles. Jackie’s Custard Co. can also make gluten free ice cream cakes. Please note that they are CLOSED ON SUNDAYS.

Wally’s Frozen Custard – St Clair Shores

Wally’s Frozen Custard is located in St. Clair Shores and offers gluten-free cones. If we’re honest, that’s the hardest part of summertime ice cream experiences during the summer- no cone.

Wally’s has another draw though- they offer Dole Whip! If you’ve never head of it, it became popular in Disneyland and is dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free, egg-free, and fat-free. This makes “ice cream” available to SO many other people!

Bombshell Treat Bar – Berkley, MI

I spoke with owner of Bombshell Treat Bar, Jill Kasle, at length about their gluten free options and ice cream preparations. I have personally enjoyed a treat there, and was impressed with the precautions that they take.

As you likely know, we are not a certified gluten-free facility so I hesitate to make any promises. But we will ALWAYS do our best to accommodate those with celiac or gluten considerations, as you experienced! Please note that we do have gluten-containing items on our menu so there is a natural chance of cross contamination in our store. I just don’t want to mislead anyone.

Our vanilla soft serve mix and signature Madagascar vanilla ice cream are both gluten-free. Our ice cream menu also features strawberry sorbet, chocolate ice cream and vanilla oat milk – all of which are gluten-free and individually packaged, ensuring they are well protected.

All of our premium chocolate dips are gluten-free with the exception of cookies and cream and a possible seasonal flavor. And we have many gluten-free toppings to choose from.

For anyone with a strong allergy, our staff is happy to go into the back kitchen and prepare an ice cream bar or soft serve cup with chocolate that has never been dipped into.

We can also incorporate toppings that are fresh out of their packaging. While taking these measures should give comfort to many, there is always a chance of gluten in the air, so it really boils down to a personal level of comfort.

In full transparency, we did not set out to be a gluten-free destination. I just think it’s so important to try to accommodate your guests and deliver an experience that makes them feel seen and appreciated. If there’s a way to help someone with a dietary restriction, we will simply do our best to accommodate!

I do not personally have celiac or a gluten intolerance, nor does anyone in our family. But I am mindful of how prevalent this concern has become and want Bombshell to be a place where most everyone can indulge and enjoy something truly delicious.

We also have a great coffee and hot chocolate menu that is “safe,” as well as soda floats and milkshakes.

Detroit Water Ice Factory offers a wide variety of flavors, with almost all being gluten free. (Their Motown Mash flavor is not gluten free.) This business is owned by Mitch Albom, and the majority of their profit go to Say Detroit, which provides funding to Detroit non-profits.

Cold Truth Ice Cream- Detroit

All flavors of ice cream at Cold Truth are gluten free, as well as dairy free. Flavors are made from a coconut cream base. In addition, all ice cream is soft serve. They no longer offer gluten free cones.

In addition to their flagship Detroit location, they also have locations in Ann Arbor and Ferndale.

Milk & Honey Cafe – Traverse City

Milk & Honey Cafe and Ice Creamery was first brought to my attention while writing an article for the Pure Michigan campaign.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time while in TC and had to pass it up. But after reading a review by my friend Dallas, (those are her adorable daughters above), I had to learn more.

Milk & Honey makes their ice cream from scratch with local, organic and non-gmo ingredients.

They create flavor combinations with mix-ins, and pull fresh ice cream with a clean spade for those with Celiac Disease.

They have gluten-free cones and also have a full sandwich menu with gluten-free bread.

Dalzell Dairy – Suttons Bay

Dalzell Dairy maintains a list of the gluten free ice cream options that they offer. Staff are willing to scoop from a fresh tub if requested. They will also change scoopers and gloves upon request.

For those who follow a dairy free diet, they offer oat based black cherry, blueberry, and vanilla, along with a few other rotating flavors. Plus, they offer Dole Whip.

And they offer gluten free cake cones.

Gluten Free Options Outside of Michigan

Live outside of Michigan? Or planning a road trip? One of my favorite ice cream shops to visit is Jeni’s Ice Cream.

They offer many gluten free ice cream flavors, including Birthday Cake, Banana Cream Pudding and Texas Sheet Cake. You can also find their ice cream in stores.

As for smaller independent businesses, Erin Ann’s Ice Cream in Sylvania,OH and Ice Cream Social in Madison, WI are on my bucket list to visit. They are both 100% gluten free.

Where is Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery Located?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore I hope the many pictures I took at Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery give you an idea of the awesomeness of this place. This 100% dedicated gluten-free bakery makes just about anything you can imagine.

Cookies? Check. Donuts? Check. Cake and eclairs? Double check. Just where does one find all these amazing gluten-free baked goods? Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery is located outside of Chicago, in Hinsdale.

Why did Ali Graeme Open a Gluten Free Bakery?

My husband and I arrived early on a Sunday morning. Owner Ali Graeme personally gave me a back end tour of the bakery. Staff were busy making donuts, and these gorgeous blueberry scones, pictured below. Look at the size of those blueberries! HUGE! As others mixed, cut and decorated, Ali shared the “why” behind Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery.

Ali’s son received a Celiac Disease diagnosis in 2007. At that time, she felt that all the gluten-free options for her son tasted far from excellent. Then, shortly after his diagnosis, her doctors diagnosed her as well. (Please remember Celiac Disease is genetic. Therefore all family members should be tested as well.) What started as a passion for safe baking for her own household blossomed into a business feeding others.

Are Sweet Ali’s Bakery Items Celiac Safe?

Yes, the entire building is gluten free. In addition, all Sweet Ali Gluten Free Bakery items are certified gluten free through the Gluten Free Certification Organization.

Gluten Free Cupcakes are a Sweet Ali’s Specialty

Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery makes a large assortment of cupcakes. Each week they highlight a “cupcake” of the week. They include seasonal flavors such as pumpkin, as well as creative cupcakes like chai latte, maple bacon and PB & J. I bought a hot chocolate cupcake (topped with marshmallows) and carrot cake cupcake for my parents.

When I returned the following weekend for the Mend Hunger fundraiser, I sampled the confetti cupcakes for myself. Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery was honored at that event for donating money to Mend Hunger, which provides food allergy friendly products to 29 different food pantries in the Chicagoland area.

Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery contains such a wide variety of items. When one walks into the store, your eyes first fall upon a table covered in an assortment of goodies. Apple cakes, pound cakes and toffee bars immediately tempt your taste buds.

One the day we visited, a large bowl of marshmallow treats sat in plain view. I love feasting my eyes on their decorated cut out cookies. Aren’t they just beautiful? I could easily “gobble, gobble” them all!

Their Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls are Amazing

However, the big draw at Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery continues to be their cinnamon buns. We purchased a package of these for my parents, who had been watching our dogs. My dad’s review was that they “were to die for!”

You can find these amazing sweets in their stores, at Egg Harbor Cafes in the greater Chicago area, and on their website. If you order them online, they will ship them to you without the cream cheese frosting.

Does Sweet Ali’s Offer Vegan Baked Goods?

Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery also makes many vegan items. (They are not a dairy or egg free facility, so choose wisely if you have a food allergy to either.) These vegan chocolate chunk cookies look delicious enough to eat as far as I’m concerned!

I love seeing the GFCO certification label on these as well. It shows the level of dedication this bakery takes to safeguard those who need to follow a gluten-free diet. You will find these cookies on their shelves, as well as packaged mixes and her flour blend.

Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery also serves locally roasted coffee from Dark Matter Coffee. Enjoy a cup inside the shop or get a cuppa to go in one of Sweet Ali’s travel mugs. They also sell t-shirts and other swag to show off your Sweet Ali’s love.

Yes! You can order SO many of their gluten free baked goods online. That includes their cinnamon roll, breads, brownies, angel food cake, cookies, mixes and more.

After all, when you’re voted one of the 10 best bakeries in Illinois (even amongst regular bakeries), it’s definitely something worth representing! I’ve been a huge fan of Sweet Ali’s for years, also meeting them at the GFAF Expo. I’m so glad I finally ventured into the bakery to experience all they have to offer. Where is Newaygo Bookstore?

Newaygo Bookstore is in Newaygo, Michigan in Newaygo County. This small city, situated on the Muskegon River, is located approximately 40 miles north of Grand Rapids. You’ll find it near the intersection of M-37 and M-82.

Who Owns Newaygo Bookstore?

Krystal Johnson owns Newaygo Bookstore. When she and her late husband Eric opened the business in 2022, it was called Flying Bear Books. At the time, the store specialized in used books.

“We had a vision of expanding it by adding a gluten-free creperie and showcasing local artists and musicians. Our goal was to diversify the bookstore, create a gathering place for the community, and bring more people through the doors.”

The Transition from Flying Bear Books To Newaygo Bookstore

In June 2024, Eric died suddenly. “After losing him, I was determined to keep the bookstore going in his honor. It hasn’t been easy. Becoming a single parent and the sole proprietor of a business that we both loved has been incredibly difficult.”

Krystal renamed it “The Newaygo Bookstore” in honor of this community – “a community that loved my husband and has continued to show that love by supporting both me and our little bookstore through some of our darkest days.”

Newaygo Bookstore Sells Used and New Books

Newaygo Bookstore sells just about every genre of books imaginable. When my husband and I walked in through the back door, we were surprised to see French literature!

There’s a selection of children’s books, as well as a Michigan author section, a Manga section, and even selection of “sprayed edges” books with beautifully colored pages.

Crystal also offers a discount for all teachers and those who homeschool. *Note- Crystal does not buy used books at this time.

What Makes Newaygo Bookstore Unique?

Newaygo Bookstore sells more than just books. Crystal likes to support local artists, and sells artwork and handmade items from other people in the area.

She also hosts book signings with Michigan artists, and has hosted musicians at the bookstore in the past.

Newaygo Bookstore Offers “Blind Date with a Book”

One of Crystal’s signature items is her “Blind Date with a Book” selections. Each wrapped book comes with a bookmark, stickers, tea bags or drink mix for the kids, and a wrapped snack. Blind Date with a Book collections include children, young adult, and various adult book options.

Why Did They Decide to Open a Gluten Free Creperie?

For Krystal, it was personal. “My mother and several other relatives follow a gluten-free diet. Anytime we go on vacation or leave town, it is almost impossible to find a place that is truly safe for them to eat. There have been many times when food was cross-contaminated and they ended up very ill.

I wanted to create a safe place where people like my family could enjoy a nice, sweet treat without having to worry about getting sick.

Are ALL of the Crepe Ingredients Gluten Free?

“Yes. Our kitchen is completely gluten-free. We wanted to create a space where people with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease could enjoy a treat without worrying about cross-contact.

For our crepes, we use a flour blend from a brand called Namaste. It’s a one-to-one substitute for traditional wheat flour and is made from a blend of sorghum flour, brown rice flour, tapioca starch, arrowroot flour, white rice flour, and gums.

In addition, all of our crepe toppings are made from scratch in our gluten free kitchen to ensure there is no cross-contact.”

What Are Their Most Popular Crepe Offerings?

Currently, Newaygo Bookstore offers 4 sweet gluten free crepe combos on their menu. At this time, there are no savory crepes. All the gluten free crepes are named after Woodland Animals – Flying Bear, Spotted Owl, Fluffy Bunny, and Soaring Eagle.

By far, their Flying Bear crepe is the most popular. My husband and I ordered one to share and it was AMAZING. It consists of a thin gluten free crepe filled with vanilla cream, nutella, bananas, strawberries, and powdered sugar.

Does Newaygo Bookstore Accommodate Other Food Allergens?

“While we take great care to provide a safe environment for those with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease, we do use other allergens, including nuts and dairy, in our kitchen.”

Does Newaygo Bookstore & Creperie Offer Any Beverages?

Yes, Newaygo Bookstore offers coffee, lattes, teas, and hot chocolate. For those looking for something cool and refreshing, they offer a delicious Strawberry fresca and lemonade. My mother-in-law ordered their “Sunrise,” which is the strawberry fresca mixed with orange juice.

What About Places to Sit While at Newaygo Bookstore?

If you’re ordering food, there’s plenty of tables and chairs, which are also available when musicians are performing.

In addition, there are little cozy reading nooks around the bookstore. So curl up with a book and a cuppa tea and just unwind.

Where Should I Park When Visiting Newaygo Bookstore?

While there is some street side parking, there is a parking lot behind Newaygo Bookstore. You’ll turn between River Threads and The Boutique to access the parking lot.

The building has a back door with a ramp, which is great for those with a walker or wheelchair.

Where Else Should I Visit While in Newaygo?

Stop in at Market 41 to find a variety of items from local vendors, including Newaygo Bookstore’s “Date With a Book” combos.

Visit the Newaygo County website for information on outdoor hiking, golf and more. Root & Rise is a dedicated gluten free restaurant opening soon in nearby Fremont, Michigan.

Newaygo Bookstore is located on M-37. You can take this route 100 miles north all the way to Traverse City. You’ll also drive through Mesick on this route, which is where you’ll find De Food Truck, which is 100% gluten free.

Buddy’s Pizza History

Buddy’s Pizza has been a Detroit institution for decades. Literally. The original Buddy’s Pizza opened in Detroit, Michigan in 1946. This is Detroit’s iconic pizza parlor, from the small corner business to the large chain that runs today.

This gem is not just a Michigan favorite. In 2003 the Food Network claimed it as one of the “Nation’s Five Best Pizza Places.” Regardless of its growth, this pizzeria is still family owned.

How Does Buddy’s Prepare Gluten Free Pizzas?

I learned about Buddy’s Pizza from people in my support group years ago. Everyone who eat there LOVES it. They take some great steps to prevent cross contact, too. They make their own homemade gluten free crust.

First, staff sterilize their work space. When a customer orders a gluten free pizza at Buddy’s, staff change gloves and use clean utensils. They even use fresh sauce and toppings.

Gluten free pizzas are baked on the top rack, lined with foil, to prevent cross contact with other pizzas. Each of their location hires employs a staff member explicitly trained in food allergy preparation protocol.

Is Buddy’s Gluten Free Pizza Crust Dairy Free? No.

This Buddy’s Pizza crust tastes 100& amazing, is nice and fluffy, and contains no yeast. I asked the staff how they miraculously pull this off. Buttermilk. All those fantastic cultures provide the lift to this pizza.

You can choose your own toppings (from their gluten free menu, only) or order one of their signature pizzas. We chose pineapple and grilled chicken.

I highly appreciate that Buddy’s Pizza waitstaff bring a fresh pizza cutter with your order. Therefore, you cut your own pizza, further diminishing the chance for cross contact.

How Does Buddy’s Pizza Prepare Their Salads?

Each salad is prepared freshly in a clean bowl, which is brought to the table. Buddy’s Pizza makes a majority of their salad dressings from scratch, although not all of them are gluten free. I LOVE the Buddy’s Pizza Greek Salad.

Buddy’s Pizza and Bocce Ball

Buddy’s Pizza offers more than just food and drinks. The original downtown Detroit location also offers bocce ball. The tradition of bocce ball at Buddy’s Pizza is as old as the founding of the original location.

What’s bocce? This “lawn game” involves 8 balls, and a one small target. The game can be played between two people, or against teams. The connection between Buddy’s Pizza and bocce is so famous, that a Griffin Claw Brewing named a beer in honor of it. So head to Buddy’s Pizza on Six Mile, order a pizza, and play a round! (Beer is not gluten free.)

Where is Buddy’s Pizza Located?

Buddy’s Pizza operates 14 full service restaurants and 5 carry out locations, mostly in the greater Detroit area. I have personally visited the Novi location, as well Auburn Hills and Okemos, which is the only location outside of the Detroit area.

If you visit the Novi location, I highly suggest a short drive to the Dairy Twist Cafe on Benstein Rd in Walled Lake. They offer gluten free and dairy free soft serve ice cream, as well as gluten free cones! (Just one of many places to get gluten free ice cream in Michigan.)

Who Owns Tru Pizza?

Many Michiganders know that Tru Pizza originally started in 2014 as Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria. Opened in Troy by Gabe Hertz, he started the restaurant due to his daughter’s Eosinophilic Esophagitis, which prevented her from eating gluten and nuts.

In May 2019, Achille (Ace) DiNello purchased the business. He changed the name to Tru Pizza, but maintained the dedicated gluten free kitchen and menu. Since taking over the business, he has offered franchising options to independent owners to expand the brand.

Achille DiNello owns quite an impressive business portfolio. Aside from Tru Pizza, he also owns Melting Moments, New York Pizza Pie, and recently acquired Halo Burger in Flint and Cops & Donuts in 2026.

What’s On The Menu at Tru Pizza?

Despite the name, Tru Pizza serves more than just pizza. They also offer calzones, wraps, pasta, salad and even soups! Their menu also includes appetizers such as chicken wings and fries. Oh, and they offer both New York Thin Crust and Detroit Deep Dish pizzas.

Tru Pizza Locations

Troy – 1937 W Maple Rd Troy, MI 48084

The original restaurant is still owned by Achille. However, general manager Jake DeFisher runs the day to day operations. It’s located in the Cambridge Crossings Shops plaza.

You’ll find it on Maple Rd between Crooks Rd and Coolidge Hwy. It offers a dining room that seats up to 50 people. The original Troy location is open 7 days a week, and they offer delivery. Open Monday – Thursday 11 to 8:30 pm, Friday & Saturday 11 -9 pm , Sun 11 – 8 pm

Plymouth – 41116 Five Mile Rd Plymouth, MI 48170

This franchise location is owned and operated by the same family who owns and operates Rumi’s Passion. In fact, there is a walkway between the two locations so you can shop at the bakery while you wait for your order to be prepared!

This Plymouth Tru Pizza location operates mainly as a take out pizza business. The shop includes 3 tables for seating, and guests are welcome to sit at one of the tables at Rumi’s Passion during normal business hours. Open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am – 8 pm.

Wyandotte – 3144 Biddle Avenue Wyandotte, MI 48192

Anthony Cipolla opened the Tru Pizza Wyandotte franchise location in January 2026. For those familiar with the area, the business operates in the former Frank’s Family Pizzeria storefront.

Anthony is closing this location as of August 30th, 2026. It will transition into a different pizza place. While it will have gluten free options, it will not be a 100% dedicated gluten free business.

Food Truck – Pops Up at Various Locations

Anthony Cipolla opened the food truck in the summer of 2025. Someone within the Tru Pizza chain is looking to take over the food truck, as Anthony is leaving the Tru Pizza franchise.

Follow them on their Facebook and Instagram to see where they will be next. They often pop up for Detroit Street Eats and at the Eastern Market.

They maintain a smaller menu than the restaurants due to limited space. They offer breadsticks, 3 grilled wraps, 5 flavors of calzones and pizzas, and their popular cinnamon sticks and elephant ears.

Is the Menu the Same at all Locations?

As mentioned above, each location offers a version of the original menu. Each location uses the same Tru Dough recipe. However not all options are available at each location.

The Plymouth location offers pizza, fries, pasta, salads, wraps and elephant ears & cinnamon sticks for dessert. They are experimenting with wings & chicken strips, but they are not available just yet. They do not offer soup because Rumi’s Passion makes it next door.

Is their Menu Free from Other Food Allergens?

Tru Pizza uses no peanuts, sesame, or fish in any of their menu items. You can see their complete allergen list on the original Troy website. The allergen list discloses menu items that contain eggs, dairy, soy and corn.

A disclaimer on the Troy website states “*Vegan cheese uses coconut oil. Cake rolls and cookies are produced in another facility that may contain tree nuts and peanuts.”

What Type of Oil Do They Use for Cooking?

The Troy location and Plymouth location both use canola oil. The website for the Wyandotte locations claims they use “use 100% canola oil in all fryers. Chicken and dairy products are cooked in dedicated fryers separate from vegan items.”

Do They Have Vegetarian or Vegan Options?

The dough for their pizza and calzones contain no animal products. They offer vegan cheese for pizzas, calzones and pasta dishes.

Do They Have Dessert Options?

Yes! Tru Pizza is famous for their gluten free elephant ears and cinnamon sticks with frosting. The original location in Troy also offers a S’mores Pizza.

Do They Serve Alcohol?

No.

Do They Offer Weekly Discounts?

The Troy location offers three different lunch combos from 11 am – 2 p m, Monday thru Friday. For $8.99 you can order 2 slices of pizza with a foundation drink, or 1 slice of pizza with a drink and either a side salad or a cup of soup.

The Plymouth location lunch combo is 2 slices and a can of pop for $10.

The Wyandotte locations offer a lunch combo from 11 am – 2 pm. Combo options include Two Slices of Pizza + Drink for $9.99 or a Chicken Wrap + Fries + Drink for $15.99.

Do They Deliver?

The Troy location utilizes third party delivery companies to deliver to local areas . The Plymouth location offers 3rd party delivery through Uber Eats, Doordash & GrubHub.

Why has Sedona Taphouse chosen to offer gluten free options?

We offer gluten free items to make sure we are diverse when it comes to dietary restrictions and allergy restrictions. It is important for us to have a wide variety of options available to accommodate all guests requests.

Is your menu also free from any other allergens?

At Sedona Taphouse we take all dietary restrictions/allergies into account and we have an option available to anyone that walks through the door.

We train our staff from the onset of greeting to make sure to note any allergies before the food ticket has been rang in. Then, managers confirm the order. They communicate with the kitchen to make sure that dish has been prepared correctly and safely.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/ cooking?

The oil used is a blended highly refined edible oil and we have the allergen statement posted from the company we get it from on our expo line for easy staff access to ensure communication with our guests on potential allergy inquiries or concerns.

Do you use gluten free wheat starch or oats in your gf meals?

Our base for a lot of our gluten free products (bun, pasta or flatbread) is typically a combination of corn, rice or potato.

We also carry a gluten free breading which is made from an all-purpose gluten free flour with garbanzo bean and tapioca flour. Popular items from our gluten free flour include: Buffalo cauliflower, Walleye Piccata (gluten free option), and our Kid Chicken tenders.

Do you have a separate gluten free menu?

Our main menu notates our gluten free options with either “GF” which means it is already gluten free or “GFO”, which means there is an option to make it gluten free.

Do you have a separate prep area for gluten free dishes?

We prep our items gluten free and always change gloves and wash hands in order to maintain any potential of cross contamination. We also use a separate sanitizer and cutting board for gluten free items.

What training do your staff receive on preparing GF meals safely?

From the order taker, to the kitchen, one of our main focuses is cross contamination, allergies or dietary restrictions. We train our entire staff on the process of the order taking to the order preparing to the order being served.

We have multiple posters in our kitchen area as well to further ensure communication and the follow-through process is observed. It starts with clear communication from the server with the guest, to the manager working in the kitchen, then to the staff before the ticket is sent back.

All managers have easy access to every recipe in order to confirm if the dish contains any of the allergies communicated to the server.

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a GF meal?

We do have gluten free picks and also use separate plates to denote gluten free items.

Do you have gluten free vegetarian or vegan options?

Just like our gluten free items, vegetarian (V), vegetarian option (VO), vegan (V+),vegan option(VO+) are also denoted on our menu.

Is there an upcharge for gluten free items, and is it noted on your menu?

Not all gluten free meal options have a extra charge. However, a gluten free burger carries a charge of $1 for the bun, and it also denoted on the menu.

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item?

We have a lot of gluten free options so it is hard to say what is the most popular but here are the top 3: Gluten free pasta dishes, gluten free burgers, & gluten free flatbreads.

Do you offer gluten free desserts?

Currently we have one gluten free option on our dessert menu which is the chocolate decadence, a very popular item. We also run specials every month, which varies from menu to menu.

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?

Being a taphouse, we have a wide variety of selections. We have separate section for our hard ciders and also a section for gluten free beer options. 

We also like to put together wine, beer and hard cider events, typically centered around a food offering or pairing. 

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside?

We do have a patio and we only allow service dogs.

What unique events do you have at your restaurant? Karaoke? Trivia? Concerts?

We like to do live music on our patio during the summer. We always have a large anniversary party where we raffle off prizes and offer discounts to guests. It is usually in April or May on a Tuesday.

We try to put together the best gift baskets in order to raise the most money for a local charity that is picked for the event. Since we work closely with charities every month of the year, we either run with the charity of the month or one that is close to our hearts.

Partnering with local charities is integral to our business model. Every month we choose a local charity to support every Monday. We offer a discount on our hand cut salmon or our flat iron steak. A $1 from every salmon or steak sold throughout the Mondays of the month goes to that charity.

Do you offer weekly deals? Kids half off? Lunch deals? Happy Hour? Any other deals?

Along with our charity Monday deals, we do our wine down Wednesday where you can choose from a wide variety of wines to purchase at ½ off the price of the bottle, which is available for selections under $50. If the bottle is over $50, we still offer a $20 discount. This offer is also available every day to go as well.

We also offer happy hour pricing from Monday to Friday from 2-5:30 pm, which includes select discounted food options and drinks. I’m a little biased but you would be hard pressed to find a better happy hour than ours.

Do you have parking on premises? Any tips on traveling to your business?

(This interview is being done with management at the Novi, Michigan Sedona Taphouse location.) Since we are connected to Twelve Oaks Mall, we share the mall parking lot. We are located in between JC Pennry and Macy’s on the Southwest side of the mall.

Twelve Oaks Mall is conveniently located just off I-96 in Michigan, at the Novi Rd exit.

What other things would you like my followers to know about Sedona Taphouse?

I mentioned some of the more important things above. At Sedona Taphouse, we take a lot of pride in maintaining the freshest ingredients and freshest products. We prep fresh daily, have hand cut filets, ribeyes, salmon and walleye that are tremendous options.

Although we are a taphouse, which we do have 50 taps and 100 bottle/can options. On Wednesday, take advantage of on our Wine Down Wednesday Promo. In addition we also offer a lot of handcrafted cocktails which our bartenders prep fresh juice daily as well!

Why do you choose to offer gluten free items at 5 Lakes Brew Pub?

I have had Celiac for 20 years. When we joined our partners in this restaurant venture 5 years ago, gluten free was one aspect we wanted to add to the menu because I know first hand the difficulty of going out to eat and eating safely.

Is your menu at 5 Lakes Brew Pub also free from other allergens?

Our menu is only marked for gluten free. However we train managers to check ingredients for customers should other allergen concerns arise. For example, our managers are aware of the ingredients in our buns because they are questioned about them often.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/ cooking?

We use soybean oil.

Do you use gluten free wheat starch or oats in your gluten free meals?

No. If we need a starch for a gluten free entree, we use cornstarch/ We typically only use it in soups.

Do you have a separate gluten free menu at 5 Lakes Brew Pub?

No. We mark our regular menu with a symbol of the many items that can be ordered gluten free.

Do you have a separate prep area for gluten free dishes?

Yes. we do have a separate gluten free prep area! It is completely separated from the rest of the cooking line. Our gluten free area has its own fryer, grill, table, utensils, microwave, and food storage.

What training do your staff receive on preparing GF meals safely?

Only approved people are allowed to make gluten free food. Our Kitchen Manager makes sure they are well versed. Plus. I watch the area like a hawk to make sure they are following protocol.

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a GF meal?

Yes we use wooden gluten free picks

Do you have gluten free vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes, it is not noted on the menu, but our staff are always willing to help customers find something to meet their dietary needs.

We do have an up charge for Gluten Free buns and wraps, and it is noted on the menu

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item at 5 Lakes?

This is a hard question to answer. We offer a wide variety of gluten free dining options. I think people (myself included) like to be able to come to our restaurant and be able to order whatever they want. They’re all fantastic.

An appetizer…got it, burger…got it, variety of sandwiches…got it, fries…got it, pizza…got it, pasta…got it, dessert…got it. There are so many places you go to and your only choice is salad. We strive to offer so much more than a salad at 5 Lakes Brew Pub

Do you offer gluten free desserts?

Yes. We have a Lava Cake and freshly baked Chocolate Chip Cookies. We serve both with ice cream.

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?

We do not currently serve a gluten free beer. We do serve hard ciders (4-5 on tap at all times), canned cocktails, wine and a full bar.

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside?

We do have a patio that seats 30 people. Dogs are not allowed.

We do Trivia on Tuesday Nights.

Social District

There is also a social district right outside our restaurant with outdoor tables, mini golf, etc. to hang out. It’s a lot of fun for the whole family. In addition, Tanger Outlets features Friday Night concerts in the summer months in the social district area.

Do you have parking on premises? Any tips on traveling to your business?

We are in Tanger Outlet, so there is plenty of mall parking. The best place to park if you are visiting our restaurant is to park in the southeast corner of the mall. We are located right there. 5 Lakes Brew Pub is approximately 30 minutes south of LMCU Ballpark, on 131.

Why do you choose to offer gluten free options?

We have several friends and family members with gluten intolerance, celiac, and allergens to gluten. Therefore we strived to create and offer items that would be safe for those that cannot have gluten.

Is your entire menu also free from any other allergens?

We are also a peanut free facility. We have a few items that contain other nuts, and have pistachios in house for a couple dishes.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/ cooking?

We use soy oil for our fryers and many other dishes. We also use olive oil for a few items on our menu.

Do you use gluten free wheat starch or oats in your gf meals?

No. We primarily use Bobs Red Mill 1-to-1 GF pastry flour. We use Udi’s for our Gluten Free sandwich buns and Gluten Free pizza dough.

Do you have a separate gluten free menu?

No, we don’t have a separate gluten free menu. Our regular menu(s) indicates gluten free options with a “GF” or “GFO” for items. This highlights dishes which are already gluten free or can easily be made gluten free with optional ingredients.

Do you have a separate prep area for gluten free dishes?

No, we do not. We clearly state on our menu that we are not a dedicated gluten free facility. Our staff take extra precautions when preparing food allergen items.

What training do your staff receive on preparing gluten free meals safely?

We require everyone in of our management team(s) to have serve safe Allergens and Food Manager training complete within 60 days of employment. Any additional training is trickle down from Callee and myself, which is brought to and taught to the rest of the staff. They are all very aware of the severity and need for these precautions.

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a GF meal?

Yes we use a “Allergen” pick to indicate any and all allergens.

Do you have gluten free vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes we have a few items that are or can be GF and vegitarian. We do not have a large enough demand to offer many or any vegan items. We can substitute items to make a vegan dish or two.

Is there an upcharge for gluten free items, and is it noted on your menu?

Yes we do as this is an extra cost for us. We only do this to cover these incurred costs. This is clearly denoted on our menu.

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item at Archival Brewing?

Our most popular gluten free dish here at Archival Brewing is our Gluten Free Fish and Chips.

Do you offer gluten free desserts?

Yes, we offer gluten free desserts, which we make in house. Pictured above is out gluten free Basque Cheesecake.

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine? 

We do not offer gluten free beer. However, we make meads and ciders, which are naturally gluten free. We create them in house, in dedicate gluten free equipment, and serve them on dedicated gluten free taps. We also offer 6 local wines, as well as a full cocktail bar with liquors. (bourbon, vodka, rum, gin, agave spirit, and several others)

For those avoiding alcohol we also serve mocktails and Michigan Made Detroit City sodas.

Do you have patio seating at Archival Brewing? Are dogs allowed outside?

We have a heated deck as well as a large beer garden with seating, yard games, and fire pits. Archival Brewing welcomes friendly dogs to all of our outdoor areas. We even offer a dog burger on our menu for our furry guests! Plus we always have treats available for them.

What unique events do you have at your restaurant?

We host weekly trivia on Thursdays, and we have live music every Friday throughout the year. In addition, we offer live music on Thursdays & Saturdays in the beer garden during the warmer months.

We offer a $15 burger and beer/shot & pop lunch combo. We also have Brunch on Sundays. That includes a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar, a Brunch combo for 2 people ($60 for any two brunch items and a bottle of sparkling wine that you can BYO mimosa).

We also offer a mug club membership , which costs $75 a year. Members earn the use of a 24oz mug for the entire year. Benefits of mug club membership include:

What else would you like people to know about Archival Brewing?

We offer gluten free kids menu items. including gluten free chicken tenders, burgers, grilled cheese and a veggie platter. Kids can enjoy a gluten free root beer float as well.

We also host private events. In 2026, Revue Magazine nominated Archival Brewing for the best small venue in their Best of the West contest. We host anything from large groups to weddings, graduation open house, corporate events, holiday parties…etc. We also offer (new this upcoming winter) igloos in our beer garden with full service of food and drinks.

Our location offers ample parking on premises. We’re located near Grand Rapids, north of 96 and east of 131. If you’re planning to take in a Whitecaps baseball game, we’re less than a 10 minute drive from the stadium.
