Where is Ann Arbor?

Ann Arbor is a huge tourist destination in Michigan. Being the home of one of Michigan’s two Big Ten athletic teams, that brings a lot of visitors. In fact, the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitor’s Bureau estimates 5.6 million people visited there in 2014.

If we figure that 1% of the population has Celiac Disease, we could estimate that 50,000 people are in need of gluten-free dining options while in the area. So to help make your trip a little bit easier, here are my list of top Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions. (Plus two dedicated gluten free bakeries!)

Zingerman’s Roadhouse

My first mention in my Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions is Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Why? Because Zingerman’s is synonymous with the name Ann Arbor. The level of care that they take with their food prep is PHENOMENAL.

With dedicated fryers, toasters and waffle irons, it gives peace of mind while you’re enjoying your meal. I mean, look at those Bits & Grits Waffles?! I wish I had a plate of them right now. Or their a gluten-free fried chicken. Fried Chicken folks! While you’re in the area, make a pit stop at Plum Market across the street for Ethel’s Baking Company treats and other gluten-free goods.

Frita Batidos

I think I’m in love with Frita Batidos. Even though their “fritas” are served bunless for us gluten-free eaters, it may be the most delicious beef patty I’ve ever tasted. Did I mention that their beef is locally sourced?  Their signature fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer. That’s a huge thing for those of us with Celiac Disease.

Their batido milkshakes are wonderful. I could eat my weight in their cajeta, which is made-in-house salted goat’s milk caramel. Cover one of their sweet deep-fried plantains in the stuff and you’ll never want to leave. Add rum to their batidos and it truly is a happy hour. 

Condado Tacos

I’ve visited three different Condado Taco locations, and have had amazing meals every time. The majority of their menu is gluten free, and they have great protocols in place for dietary restrictions. Plus they’re a peanut free and nut free restaurant. Read my review. 

Juicy Kitchen

Ann Arbor is a place with many eclectic flavors and attention to healthy eats. Juicy Kitchen focuses fresh, local food with options for all kinds of eaters. Gluten-free? Check. Vegetarian? Check. Vegan? Yep, that’s covered too.

This delicious gluten-free stuffed French toast is cooked on a dedicated griddle with clean utensils and bowls. Cooks never share the egg wash from the regular French Toast. I highly suggest taking a bite with a bit of strawberry. 

Core Life Eatery

The Core Life Eatery chain recently opened a new location in Ann Arbor. Apart from the bread made off site, everything at Core Life contains no gluten ingredients. You can create your own bowl, or order one of their popular entrees. They also feature some pretty amazing beverages, including hot bone broth.

Anna’s House

This chain of restaurants originally started in Grand Rapids, and opened the Ann Arbor Anna’s House location in 2019. Gluten free meals are prepared in a dedicated prep space with dedicated utensils. While any meal here is stellar, their gluten free breakfast options are phenomenal. Pictured above is their breakfast lasagna.

Buddy’s Pizza

Buddy’s Pizza has many locations across Michigan, including one on Ann Arbor- Saline Rd. Read more about this business in my review.

Tasty Bakery

This 100% gluten free bakery serves up treats at their storefront, and at the Kerrytown Market. Customers also enjoy their treats at local Sweetwater coffee shop locations. To learn more about this unique confectionery, read my interview with Tasty Bakery.

Nirit’s Bakery

This Cottage Law business, Nirit’s Bakery, sells at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Everything they make is gluten, dairy, soy and nut free. 

Blank Slate Creamery

Blank Slate Creamery is an ice cream icon in Ann Arbor. They make all of their own ice cream, and many flavors are gluten free. Gluten Free flavors are clearly labeled. 

Blom Meadworks

Blom Meadworks sells naturally gluten free, alcoholic mead. They often have gluten free snack options, too. 

Other Ann Arbor Gluten-Free Restaurant Suggestions

1. Paesano’s
I’ve heard lots of great things about Paesano’s over the years. A friend recently had dinner there, and enjoyed gluten free pasta and even tiramisu! They even serve gluten free bread. I need to return to Ann Arbor just to visit this restaurant. 

2. Pilar’s Tamales
Pilar’s Tamales is a small Salvadoran restaurant on Liberty St. Corn flour comprises the base of almost every item on the menu. They do make a few non gluten-free desserts. I highly suggest the pupusas stuffed with cheese and loroco flower.

3.  Miki Japanese Restaurant
My friend Jen Burch, from Blue Bear Aware, highly recommended this Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant option to me. The biggest issue for any Asian restaurant is the presence of wheat in soy sauce. She reports that Miki offers gluten-free soy sauce for their dishes. If you get a chance to eat there safely, report back so I know!

4. Totoro

If you’re in the mood for sushi, Totoro has many gluten free sushi options. Gluten free options notated on menu.

5. Stadium Market
Stadium Market isn’t really a restaurant. It’s a party store with a functional kitchen, selling gluten-free pizza and breakfast sandwiches Again, Find Me Gluten-Free has many reviews about this place. I sought the advice of Valarie Mates, the moderator of the online Gluten-Free Ann Arbor Yahoo Group.

She said that it’s “awesome.” Stadium Market reportedly has many gluten-free beers, and sells a selection of Udi’s products. If you can attest to their steps for preventing cross-contact, please let me know!

6. Salt Springs Brewery

Salt Springs Brewery is located in Saline, which is just outside of Ann Arbor. While I have not personally eaten there, I’ve been told they have a dedicated gluten free fryer for fried fish. However, I would check with wait staff before ordering, just to make sure. 

Final Reminders about Eating Gluten Free in Ann Arbor

As always, I suggest calling restaurants prior to dining to ask about gluten free food preparation practices. This allows you to get the best information without staff being distracted during a food rush. Luckily, Ann Arbor is a forward thinking city and there are plenty of options. You can even eat safely at University of Michigan dining commons! And last I knew, there’s a gluten free stand at the football field.

Hola Arepa – Newaygo, MI (100% GF)

Followers recently told me about Hola Arepa. The images on their Facebook page state that their entire menu is gluten free. Follow the on Facebook to see where they will show up next. It looks like they are often at Nelson’s Farm Market in Grant.

De Food Truck USA – Mesick (100% GF)

De Food Truck, located in Northern Michigan, offers a 100% gluten free menu. That includes fried fish, French Fries, falafel and more. Read more about this fantastic business in my review.

Tru Food Pizza Food Truck – Metro Detroit (100% GF)

Tru Pizza (formerly Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria) started in Troy, Michigan as a 100% gluten free pizzeria. Since then they have added a location in Plymouth, MI and have recently opened a food truck. You’ll find it mostly in the Metro Detroit area, and in Ann Arbor on Wednesdays at the Farmers Market. Follow them on social media to see their schedule.

Ace’s Donuts – Royal Oak (100% GF)

When I asked Ace’s Donuts what kind of flour they use for their donuts, they stated they use rice flour. You can find them most weeks at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Follow them on Instagram or visit their website.

Veged Out Food Truck – Waterford (GF Options)

While Vedged Out is NOT a 100% gluten free food truck, they have lots of gluten free options. In addition, they’re the old vegan food truck I’d recommend. They have some amazing gluten free wraps. You can usually find them at Oasis Health Foods.

Burger Bus – Marquette (Mostly Gluten Free)

Everything on the Burger Bus food truck is gluten free, except the brioche bun. Even their fried chicken is gluten free! Gluten free buns are available for $2.50 extra.

Fire and Rice – Lansing & Ann Arbor (100% GF)

I discovered paella when in college. My college roommate has Spanish extended family, and she made this often. The blend of saffron and vegetables and artichokes tastes like home to me.

Therefore, imagine my ecstatic joy when I realize that Fire and Rice makes all their paellla to be gluten free. It’s like heaven in a box. Follow them on Facebook to stalk find them near you!

Kona Ice – Multiple Franchise Locations (100% GF)

Many dessert food trucks exist out there. However, this is the only food truck I know where everything is gluten free. True, Kona Ice basically serves snow cones. But how great is it to relive your childhood with creative flavors? Kona Ice is a franchise, so you can find them in lots of cities. I visited a truck while at a Frankenmuth Truck Rally, and the owners reside in Fenton.

*Hero or Villain – Detroit Area (GF Options)

Disclaimer. I have not personally eaten at this food truck. Their business popped up frequently when searched for Michigan gluten free food trucks. They offer gluten free bread for any of their sandwiches.

Staff stated they “switch gloves, clean and sanitize surface areas and use separate utensils,” when preparing a gluten free sandwich. Simply let their staff know about your allergen when you visit. Visit their Facebook page to learn more.

Shuck ‘n’ Ladder Corn Roasting – Metro Detroit Area

I ate at Shuck N’ Ladder while at the Michigan State Fair years ago. They serve hot, buttered ears of corn, with different, optional toppings. I felt so excited to find food at the fair that I could eat. I am unsure if their potatoes and walking tacos are gluten free. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. Where is Alcona Brew Haus located?

Situated along US-23, between Alpena and Tawas, Alcona Brew Haus calls Harrisville, MI home. Located a mile and a half from the Harrisville Harbor, this restaurant is just a stone’s throw from Lake Huron.

What Gluten Free Food Options does Alcona Brew Haus Offer?

They offer a large selection of gluten free options. Options include pizza, burgers & fries, and even macaroni and cheese. In fact, the majority of the menu can be made gluten free. The menu even includes three gluten free desserts. Only things that can’t accommodate GF are our pretzel, crispy chicken sandwich, veggie burger and large pizzas. All other menu items are or can be safely GF.

Does Alcona Brew Haus Offer Gluten Free Buns?

No they do not, but it’s intentional. By not using buns for gluten free burgers, it’s one more safeguard to making sure your burger is gluten free. It can be served on sandwich bread or pita bread.

What Steps Do They Take to Safely Prepare Gluten Free Meals?

Alcona Brew Haus takes all the precaution you would at home, and then some. They maintain a separate gluten free prep space, including separate toaster, pots and pans, and special color coded utensils. Instead of a dedicated fryer, the restaurant maintains a dedicated gluten free broaster oven.

Are Staffed Trained About Preventing Cross Contact?

Absolutely. This restaurant is owned a mom whose kids have food allergies. All staff are ServSafe trained. Staff change gloves, and aprons if the guest has Celiac Disease.

Does Alcona Brew Haus Accommodate Additional Dietary Restrictions?

YES!  Our kitchen uses no Peanuts, Tree nuts, Shellfish, or Sesame. We also accommodate dairy, egg, and soy dietary restrictions, upon request. Our goal is to make anyone, with any dietary restriction, feel welcome at our restaurant. We even use nitrile gloves in the kitchen, instead of latex, because we know latex allergies are a real concern. We also accommodate fish allergies.

What Led Alcona Brew Haus to Offer Such a Large Gluten Free Menu?

As a food Allergy mom myself, I know how difficult it can be to go out to eat.  The eye rolls, the “I don’t know” answers, and the “it should be fine” answers, etc.  It was my passion to open a place where everyone can safely eat and feel welcome.  I opened Alcona Brew Haus for them, and have no interest in a “regular restaurant.” 

Does Alcona Haus Offer Gluten Free Beer?

Yes! In fact, they offer 3 different gluten free beers. In addition they also serve wine, mead, and hard cider. Plus they offer Tito’s Vodka for making gluten free cocktails. *Note- Brewery Nyx is no longer in business. Hopefully Alcona can find another gluten free beer to have in stock.

What About Nearby Lodging & Attractions in Harrisville, MI?

Alcona Brew Haus offers overnight RV reservation through the Harvest Hosts website. (Must be a yearly member to participate.) Sandy shares that there are many Bed & Breakfasts, Air BnB’s, and resorts in the area. In addition, Harrisville State Park maintains a very nice campground.

As mentioned previously, Harrisville is located on US-23, which starts in Standish and ends at Mackinac City. You’ll find many lighthouses and other attractions along the way. The Discover US 23 website shares Outdoor Adventures, Cultural Stops, and Places to Eat, Shop & Sleep.

Why did you decide to start offering gluten free options at The Filling Station?

Several of our family members have celiac disease. The Filling Station has given us an opportunity to guarantee our loved ones and our community a safe dining experience.

We have always been passionate about our allergen procedures and training our teams working in the restaurant industry because we believe everyone should be able to eat out safely.

What are your gluten free/ allergen procedures?

We minimize cross contact with a dedicated gluten free prep space and dedicated gluten free utensils. Our kitchen staff must wash their hands and use fresh gloves when they begin a gluten free order. Our kitchen staff must also re-wash hands and apply new gloves if at anytime there is a chance of cross contamination.

Is your menu free from other allergens as well? What oil do you use for frying?

We do not use peanuts anywhere in our back kitchen, and our standard fryer uses a soy oil blend. In addition, we offer wagyu tallow as a gluten free frying alternative. Proteins are cooked in clarified butter, but we can cook in oil as a dairy-free alternative. For those avoiding meat, we offer a portabella mushroom burger and a black bean burger as as well.

What kind of gluten free options are on The Filling Station menu?

All of our sides are gluten free if you specify this preference so we are alerted to use our dedicated gluten free fryer (fries, tater tots, sweet potato waffle fries, house-made chips, hand-cut tallow fries, and coleslaw).

Additionally, the following burgers are gluten free if you order as a lettuce wrap or on our gluten free bun; beef, pork, lamb, turkey, salmon, duck, mushroom, and carnivore (wagyu, wild boar, elk & bison). We are focused on using high quality proteins free from hormones and antibiotics. 

Our house salad, loaded tots, and spinach dip are gluten free starters, and most of our milkshakes (minus cookies & cream and cheesecake) are delicious gluten free dessert options.

What We Ordered

My husband ordered the Spinach Artichoke Stuffed Portabella Burger. It’s available gluten free, and it is DELICIOUS. His sandwich came with waffle fries and they were cooked to perfection.

I ordered a basic cheeseburger with smoked gouda cheese, and it did not disappoint. Life is always better with tater tots, in my opinion. I really appreciated that our burgers came with “allergy” picks, to help notate they were gluten free.

Does The Filling Station offer gluten free beer or hard ciders?

We are currently in the licensing process to produce and serve our very own crafted hard cider! We will have 4 taps with offerings such as “Pina Popper” (pineapple & chipotle cider) and “Baba Yaga” (barrel aged blueberry almond cider)

The Filling Station also offers mocktails. My husband ordered the “Sweet Mocktail,” which was reminiscent of the Freckled Lemonade at Red Robin. I ordered the Orange Fanta, which of course is always wonderful.

What else would you like my readers to know about your business?

We offer BOGO Free on all full sized burgers and handhelds Wednesday – Sunday from 2pm-4pm. The offer is dine in only and one burger per person. We also offer catering, and would love to be able to feed your friends and family!

Where’s the best place for customers to park? 

We have a dedicated parking lot outside of our restaurant.

Recently my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to share the afternoon with the owners of De Food Truck, Toby and Joelle. While the food was absolutely amazing, the conversations with two of them was just as memorable. We sat and talked for hours!

Where is De Food Truck Located?

You can find De Food Truck is parked at the Blarney and Castle Gas Station in Mesick, Michigan. I included De Food Truck on my Traverse City Gluten Free Dining Guide.

What’s On the Menu?

Everything on De Food Truck menu is gluten free. They offer a variety of fried fish and seafood, plus chicken nuggets. In addition, they offer curry bowls. He fries everything in canola oil.

What Did You Order From De Food Truck?

My husband and I tried a variety of the fried fish and seafood. We both had perch and their amazing French Fries. These are no pre-bought frozen fries. Toby makes his fries from scratch, and fries them twice. Toby stated that they go thru as many as 100 lbs of potatoes on any given day!

My husband and I also tried their squid steak bites. I’ve never had squid before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was great! Nice and firm, without tasting overly fishy. In addition, I had the fried shrimp, which was delicious.

What Kind of Breading is Used?

Since everything on this food truck is gluten free, you’ll find no wheat flour here. Toby uses a blend of rice flour and corn starch, and his own blend of spices. Everything we tried was perfectly cooked, and not soggy.

Does De Food Truck Have Vegetarian Options?

Yes! You can order their falafel, with or without fries. (Although, I highly recommend the fries!) Toby cooks the falafel in a dedicated fryer, away from the seafood and chicken. In fact, the fries and falafel are both vegan.

In addition, Toby makes this amazing Avo-Tar, which is a version of tartar sauce made with avocado. I could have put it on everything! Toby also said that he plans to switch to vegan mayo, so he can accommodate more people with dietary restrictions.

Why a Gluten Free Food Truck?

Toby has been in the food truck business, since 2006. He personally needs to follow a gluten free diet. After having operated a variety of trucks, he decided to finally open one that benefited him and others who have to eat gluten free. I first learned about Burger 21 through the Tri County Celiac Support Group. Burger 21 frequently hosts fundraiser nights, in connection with local non-profits. After trying their burgers and fries during the Tri County fundraiser, I’ve been hooked ever since. 

Tell Me About Burger 21’s Gluten Free Philosophy 

Burger 21 started in 2010, an off shoot of The Melting Pot. The Melting Pot, having been trained by the Gluten Intolerance Group, continued that care for allergens when they started Burger 21. I connected with Cindy Cady, from the Burger 21 corporate office, to ask why offering gluten free options was so important them.

“Burger 21 promises to deliver the best burger experience, ever. This includes guests with dietary preferences, allergens, and sensitivities. The amount of guest requests for GF options were phenomenal! The “no bun” or “lettuce bun” options were not enough for us. Burger 21 sourced an exceptional GF bun that allows our guests to enjoy our Chef crafted burgers the same way our non-GF guests enjoy!

How Does Burger 21 Prevent Crosss Contact? Do You Use Dedicated Fryers? 

“To start, let’s wash our hands and change our gloves. All areas of the kitchen (grills, fryers, and all other equipment) have specific areas to ensure we are taking all necessary steps to prevent any cross contact. After gluten free items are prepared, they are placed on a separate serving tray or carry-out bag with a bright green “GF” sticker.” (Staff cook french fries in soy based oil.)”

What Food Allergen Training Does your Staff Receive?

“Upon being hired, all team members take part in allergen training during their initial training period. We include reading material in the training manuals, but the most important part is the hands-on training; actually seeing how careful menu items are prepared and handled. After the initial training period, from the corporate level, we offer on-going training material to managers and team members, as well as regular communication on proper protocols.”

What Gluten Free Options Does Burger 21 Offer? Are There Kids Meals?

As the name suggests, the majority of the menu offers burgers and fries. However, they also offer grilled chicken tenders, Impossible Burger Patties, and salads. (All salad dressings are gluten free.) Check out the Burger 21’s Dietary Preferance Guide to see all the available gluten free options. Save room for a tasty milkshake! 

Does Burger 21 Offer GF Kid’s Meals? Yes! They offer gluten free cheeseburgers, grilled chicken, and grilled cheese upon request. Kids meals include a choice of grapes or french fries, and a kid sized fountain drink, milk, apple juice or lemonade. (Kids meals available for children 10 and under. All items may not be available at all locations.)

What Do You Order? (Fries. Always Fries.) 

From the Burger 21 menu, I often order a #2, “cheesy,” which is a plain cheeseburger, on a gluten free bun. Since I can’t decide whether I want the plain or sweet potato fries, my husband and I order a “half and half” order of fries. These fries are so good, they don’t need any dipping sauce. But if you want some, the majority of their sauces are gluten free. (Not the Thai Ketchup or Toasted Marshmallow.) 

My husband also likes their beef hot dogs, but they do not have gluten free hot dog buns at this time. On the days when I especially want to treat myself, I order one of the milkshakes. The signature Bananas Foster shake is gluten free. (As are the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry milkshakes.) 

I Don’t Live in Michigan. Where Else is Burger 21 Located?

There are 14 locations total. This includes 4 locations in Florida, 2 in Georgia, 1 in Illinois, 1 in Michigan, 1 in New york, 1 in New Mexico, 2 in North Carolina and 2 in Virginia. (Plus 2 in the Tampa, FL airport.) This surprised me, because I feel this amazing concept should be available to more people. (Some locations are franchised, while others are corporate owned and operated.)

I asked Cindy Cady, “what would someone need to do if they wanted to open a Burger 21 location? “A person interested in owning their own Burger 21 would need to contact the corporate office at 813-327-7870 and express their interest. What Else Is There to Do in Novi? 

Novi, situated along 1-96, offers many fun opportunities. Near the restaurant sits IFly, an indoor skydiving attraction. Looking to keep your feet on the ground? Novi is home to two great shopping centers; Novi Town Center and Twelve Oaks Mall. Personally, I like to stop at the Better Health Market. You’ll find lots of great gluten free groceries there, and the biggest selection of dairy free cheese I’ve ever seen!

Just down Grand River Ave, you’ll find Suburban Showplace Collection, home to the Michigan State Fair and many other events. Want to get outdoors? Kensington Metropark is a 25 minute drive from the restaurant. Enjoy their beach, or use the water slide and splash pad, for an additional fee. One can also play golf, disc golf, and more.

What are my gluten free options at Wahlburgers?

Wahlburgers does not have a separate gluten free menu, nor markers on the main menu. They state that they have gluten free buns, bread and croutons at the bottom of their menu. Most burgers should be able to be prepared gluten free. In addition, they utilize a dedicated fryer for french fries and tater tots. Salads with gluten free croutons are available. Click on the Allergen Information link on the FAQ page for GF listings.

What steps do they take to prevent cross contact?

Wahlburgers maintains a separate gluten free prep space in their kitchen. (Including dedicated gluten free fryers.) They serve gluten free burgers in a paper container, in addition to the regular basket. Also, gluten free burgers come out with the bottom separated from the top, as opposed to stacked with a pick thru it.

Tot-ally Delicious

The verdict? I’d definitely return. (In fact, I already have.) Our server didn’t know all the answers to our questions. However, she made sure to ask the chef or upper management any questions she was unsure of. While the burger and tots were good, I really enjoyed the fries. They had a seasoning on them that was delicious!

Wahlburgers’ Gluten Free Dessert Options

We ordered a coffee milkshake. (Not pictured as it was messy.) Since they offer gluten free bread, one can order the Grilled Fluffanutta gluten free. I imagine it would be awesome with a scoop of ice cream on top! They also serve alcoholic “adult frappes.” This includes a fluffanuttahh frappe made with marshmallow vodka and Créme de Banana

Where is Frita Batidos?

Ann Arbor is home to many amazing restaurants, and Frita Batidos rates high on that list. While it may appear similar to a burger and fry joint, Frita Batidos is a marriage of Cuban flavors that transport you to the tropics. I don’t know that I’ve ever eaten a better burger. And that coconut batido milkshake? Sweet and delectable. All this and they’re totally hip on safely preparing foods for those with food sensitivities.

I contacted Paterno Johnson, the general manager at Frita Batidos, prior to our midweek lunchtime visit. They’ve received great reviews on the Find Me Gluten Free app, but I wanted to inquire further. Reviewers piqued my interest, stating that Frita Batidos has a dedicated fryer. (Gluten-free French Fries are the way to this gal’s heart!) They have a guide that lays out their menu by special requirements, be it gluten-free, vegetarian, lighter side, and more. Paterno explained, via email, their step-by-step process for handling an order for a customer with food allergies.

How Does Frita Batidos Handle Gluten Free Orders? 

When you place your order at the counter, the front-of-house staff comes in the kitchen to talk to the expediter. The “expo” circles the allergy item in red sharpie on both the yellow and white tickets so the line cooks and “expo” is always aware.

Line cooks wash their hands then don clean gloves as they prepare the food. When someone has an allergy to any item from the grill, we cook the item in a separate, clean and sanitized pan (with clean utensils) to avoid cross contamination. When the food is ready, they put the food in our food trays and give it directly to the expo. He or she clearly marks the tray and informs the Front Of House staff which item has the allergy.

2022 Update

While working on my Detroit gluten free dining guide, I had the chance to connect with Eve, the owner of Frita Batidos. She shared the following information.

“We do ask that guest with Celiac Disease let us know because we take extra precautions with this condition. For guests with Celiac disease we specify on our order ticket, do a verbal call to the expeditor, write it on a white board and have a dedicated person in the kitchen prepare and package the order from start to finish.

We still have the essay question on our Restaurant Test asking each staff member to describe Celiac disease in detail. They study from a version of the test with answer but take the final test without the answers in order to work independently on the floor at Frita. This is part of our mandatory front of the house training.

Over the past year and from our conversations with you, we realized we needed to focus more on training the back of the house to have the same level of understanding so that has been a big help all around!

We have tried to constantly improve our practices and training – and have focused on it recently in thanks to a staff member who worked with us over the Summer who has Celiac disease and was able to point out areas we could improve.

We do have a labeled, dedicated gluten free fryer, both in Ann Arbor and Detroit. We also have a kit in a zipped bag with dedicated gluten free cutting board, Chef’s knife, pot, pan etc…) in both Ann Arbor and Detroit! Hope all is well with you and yours and, as always, we are open to suggestions, feedback and areas to improve so I hope you will continue to do so! We SO appreciate your support!!!

Does Frita Batidos Have A Dedicated Fryer?

For anything that needs to be cooked in the fryer (like their DELICIOUS French Fries) away from contaminated items, Frita Batidos maintains a dedicated gluten free fryer. Like everything else, line cooks wash their hands then use gloves as they prepare the food.

Food delivery to the customer is the same as above. If a guest is eating with a group, their food will not be on the same tray to avoid cross contamination. Also, per requirements from the health department, a Frita Batidos has a manager that is Serv Safe Allergen Certified. While the law only requires one, Paterno understands the wisdom of having as multiple staff aware of the steps to keep food allergy guests safe.

Now that we’ve got the food safety covered, let’s get to the amazing food at Frita Batidos!

What Does Frita Batido Mean? 

The name of the restaurant, Frita Batidos, refers to Cuban burgers named Fritas. They create traditional fritas from chorizo, served on brioche buns, topped with shoestring fries and a remoulade-style sauce. Right now, Frita Batidos doesn’t carry gluten-free buns.

To be honest, I’m not sure it totally needs one. It was the MOST perfectly flavored patty I think I’ve eaten in my WHOLE LIFE.  However, manager Paterno Johnson was receptive to my suggestion of a local gluten-free bakery, should they ever decide to carry a gluten-free bun. I really appreciate his willingness to listen to suggestion.

As mentioned, alert the front of the house staff when you order, and they will cook them in a dedicated fryer. In addition to the regular fries, they also make garlic-cilantro fries that Paterno served to us with a lemon scented mayo. What a combination of flavor!

What’s The “Best Snack Ever”? 

Frita Batidos is more than just burgers, fries and milkshakes. They have some great sides as well. The staff aptly named this dish “The Best Snack Ever.” It’s comprised of coconut-ginger rice layered with black beans and melted Muenster, mixed with cilantro-lime salsa. I could seriously eat this every day.

You also have to try the twice-fried plantains. They taste a bit like a baked potato, again topped with black beans, Muenster, cilantro-lime salsa, and the addition of avocado spread and creme fraiche. If you are a vegetarian eater, you can eat well with these items, sans meat.

Does Frita Batidos Offer Gluten Free Desserts?

Of course, you have to save room for dessert. Although, life is short, so you might order one of their signature batidos first. Paterno gave us samples of the Coconut Cream and Passion Fruit batidos. I preferred the coconut, while my husband preferred the Passion Fruit.

I want to go back to try the Chocolate Espanol batido, which is dark melted chocolate steeped with cinnamon. If you’re looking for something lighter, they’ll make one with crushed ice and less ice cream. Or take a regular one up a notch and add a splash of rum!

Try the Deep Fried Plantains!

Frita Batidos is famous for their churros, which unfortunately are not gluten-free. However, Paterno was nice enough to give me a deep fried plantain, coated in cinnamon and sugar.

With that, he served me some of that delicious chocolate espanol, as well as “cajeta.” Cajeta is slow cooked caramel made from goat’s milk. I can’t even begin to tell you how CRAZY delicious this is. Make a batido with that and chocolate espanol and I would be in HEAVEN.

Frita Batidos Supports Local Michigan Businesses

Eve Aronoff is the creative chef and owner of Frita Batidos. She has won extensive awards for her cooking. After eating here, I can understand why. Eve and her staff are eager to support local, visiting local farms & purveyors and expanding their cooking skills through culinary expeditions.

They also place a high value on ongoing, continuing education for all staff. They take advantage of guidance from like minded businesses, such as Zingerman’s Zing Train courses. This and more is what makes Ann Arbor a great dining destination. There’s room for all the flavors of the palate here in A2. I look forward to returning to Frita Batidos soon and often.  Especially for happy hour, because there’s a discount on those amazing fries!
