Although these don’t contain gluten, they are manufactured in shared facilities or in shared equipment with gluten-containing products. Raaka Chocolate

While I haven’t tried them yet, I’ve been following Raaka Chocolate on social media for a while. Their gluten free waffle cone chocolate squares are what caught my eye. However, this month they are launching gluten free and vegan Robin’s Egg chocolates. (And no oat milk!) They’re also soy free, and appear to be corn free. Order Raaka’s Robin Eggs from their website. (All Raaka products are gluten, dairy and soy free. Oat milk is used in some of their products. They use coconut, but no other tree nuts or peanuts. They are also organic and Non-GMO certified.) 

Venchi

I learned about Venchi chocolate while putting together my Gluten Free Advent Calendar List. The vast majority of their products are gluten free. Click here to see the entire list of Easter gluten free candy options.

Choc Zero

Choc Zero makes low sugar, keto and gluten free chocolates. Their gluten free Easter candy options include shaped bunnies in dark, milk, and white chocolate. Click this link to learn more.

Tootsie Roll

Tootsie Roll offers a LARGE assortment of candy options for Easter. That includes chocolate Tootsie Roll Eggs, Junior Caramel Eggs, Andes Mint Bunnies, Double Bubble Eggs, and more. Jelly Belly

Jelly Belly products contain no wheat, rye or barley. They offer a large assortment of gluten free jelly beans for Easter. You can order from their website, or use the store locator on their website. Horrocks in Lansing often has a large assortment of Jelly Belly beans.

Peeps

Love them or hate them, boxed Peeps are gluten free. (Please note that Peeps on a Stick are NOT labeled gluten free.) Did you know that you can use Peeps to make Crisped Rice Treats? Hershey Chocolate

Hershey has a specific gluten free Easter Candy list on their website. This includes the York Peppermint Patty Eggs, Rolo, Milk Chocolate Hershey Kisses (no add’l flavoring), and Easter Milk Chocolate Mini PB Cups. All of these items are specifically labeled gluten free. The Reese’s PB Eggs are NOT labeled gluten free.

Alter Eco

While Alter Eco doesn’t specifically make Easter Candy, many of their candy bars and truffles ARE gluten free. When searching their website, you can specifically mark that you only want gluten free options shown.

Cadbury Products

In the United States, Cadbury products are distributed by Hershey. There is no gluten free label on either the mini eggs, or the Cadbury Cream eggs. However, neither contain gluten ingredients. Please read this article, Are Cadbury Eggs Gluten Free?, by Wheat by the Wayside. *Note, I personally eat these products. Also if you’re a Gluten Free Watchdog subscriber, the Mini Eggs have been tested. 

Chocolove- No Longer Labeled Gluten Free

I have been a fan of Chocolove candy for a long time because their products were specifically labeled gluten free. However, when I recently visited their FAQ section, their website states the following:

“We’ve recently updated our packaging and you may have noticed the Gluten Free &/or Dairy Free claims are no longer on the front of our packaging. We want to assure you that there have been no changes to the recipes or ingredients. The products you love are made with the same high-quality ingredients as always.”

Their seasonal Easter candy options include peanut butter, marshmallow and caramel filled chocolate eggs. They also offer an easter truffle assortment.

WARNING- Lindt Chocolate is NOT Gluten Free

Lindt milk chocolate products contain barley malt powder and are NOT GLUTEN FREE. Please don’t eat these. 

Michigan Made Gluten Free Easter Candy

Looking to support local when buying gluten free Easter candy this year? Check out these three companies!

Mindo Chocolate

All products made by Mindo chocolate contain no gluten. They even make their brownies made with certified gluten free oat flour! This Easter, choose between Luna the Bunny and their delicious Starry Night Easter Eggs. (The eggs contain nuts and milk.) Find them at Plum Market stores or online.

Oh MI Organics –

Despite names like Apple Pie and Baklava, every chocolate ‘cup” made at Oh MI Organics contains no gluten. The use no peanuts, soy, or cow’s milk in the facility either! (Goat’s milk is used on premises to make their caramel.) 

Travel to their shop in St. Johns to pick up their gluten free Easter candy options. They include Sunbutter filled eggs, and dairy-free marshmallow cream filled eggs, as well as solid chocolate bunnies. They may also offer some Easter themed gift bags.

As I write this, the world is in an odd season. Usually during Lent, we give up certain things – food, activity – as a religious discipline. In 2020, we are giving up physical interaction to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. As such, our Easter celebrations this year will look different.

Therefore, I’ve composed a list of recipes for a “Small Gluten Free Easter Dinner.” The idea being that most recipes serve no more than 4. Allowing yourself to have the comforts of the dishes you love, without the excess food that you can’t typically share with others. May we be reminded that life still emerges from the darkest times.

Gluten Free Easter Dinner Finger Foods

While you’re preparing your gluten free Easter dinner main dishes, set out these appetizers for noshing. A simple Charcuterie Board allows people to choose what they like. For something a touch fancier, try these Grain Free Cranberry Brie Bites. Also, do your family members stick olives on their fingers? Or is that just my cousin? 

Easter dinner isn’t complete without deviled eggs. I like this Small Batch Deviled Eggs recipe from Inspired Taste, because it only uses 6 eggs. Need even fewer? The Kitchn shares How to Make One Deviled Egg. Which is perfect for our household, because my husband refuses to eat them! 

Gluten Free Easter Dinner Main Meats

When preparing a Small gluten free Easter dinner, you may not want to go “whole hog” and make a ham. Perhaps these Apricot Ginger Glazed Pork Chops may be the serving size you’re looking for. Wanting to go a step fancier? These Garlic Butter Lamb Chops from Primavera Kitchen look easy AND delicious! 

(Note- Dearborn Ham’s packaging state their hams contain no gluten.)

This Perfect Roast Chicken from Iowa Girl Eats requires only three ingredients. I’ve made it myself, and it tastes perfect! I love that her post also includes other ways to use the leftover meat!  Looking for something smaller? Try the Braised Chicken Thighs recipe on my website.

Easter Dinner Salad & Side Vegetables

Feel free to keep your small gluten free Easter dinner simple with a tossed salad. However, should you want to take it up a notch, I love recipes like this Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad from Spend With Pennies. Or try my mother-in-law’s favorite, Waldorf Salad. It serves just 4 people!

Something about spring leaves me craving asparagus. It’s the perefct vegetable for your Easter Dinner. My friend Vegetarian Mamma created the perfect Air Fryer Asparagus recipe. Don’t have an air fryer? Try this stove top Lemon Asparagus from Gluten Free Palate.  

When I asked what dishes are a “must have” for your Easter dinner, someone mentioned carrots. For a smaller gathering, these Roasted Rainbow Carrots from a A Dash of Megnut sound perfect. These 10 Minute Green Beans from Celiac Mama sound great, too!  

Easter Dinner Starches

No Easter dinner is complete without potatoes. Personally, I like the gluten free Au Gratin potatoes on my website. It uses only 2 lbs of potatoes, which is about three large russet potatoes. Perfect for 4 servings. If you prefer mashed potatoes, try this recipe for Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes from My Gluten Free Kitchen.

The Bible says “Man cannot live on bread alone.” Doesn’t mean I can’t try, right? My gluten free Crescent Rolls are perfect for Easter! If you can’t find yeast right now, I HIGHLY recommend these easy gluten free biscuits from There is Life After Wheat. It requires only one cup of flour!

You can also use my crescent dough to make these Resurrection Rolls. Great object lesson to teach about Easter!

Easter Dinner Desserts and Drinks

Last year I remade my mother in law’s Easter Cake with homemade lemon curd. It is DELICIOUS. However, this year I want to try Dessert for Two’s Lemon Layer Cake, which she makes in one 6″ round pan. It would require subbing gluten free flour. I would recommend using Cup 4 Cup or King Arthur Flour Measure for Measure.  

Techincally, these Gluten Free Carrot Cake Cupcakes from Wheat by the Wayside make WAY more than a small batch. However, they are simple, start with a box mix, and cupcakes freeze easily. (Especially if you don’t frost them first!) Missing coconut cake? Try these Single Serve Vanilla Cupcakes from A Saucy Kitchen, and top with coconut!

Holidays can be hectic for anyone. Throw in a dietary restriction and that adds another layer of complexity. We want to keep ourselves safe, but we also want the freedom to enjoy the holiday as normally as possible. That’s totally possible if we prepare ourselves, and others, with a few reminders, first. 

Start First with Open Communication

Communication is key in any relationship. This goes for gatherings with friends, family, and business colleagues. Especially if gatherings involve food. Ask about the menu ahead of time – and not just the morning of the event. Talk a week or so in advance.  If the gathering will be a restaurant, call and ask questions during their least busy time – from 2 to 4 pm. 

Are you hosting, and want to keep your household gluten free? People will always ask if they can bring something. Assign people to bring items that are naturally gluten free. Ask people to bring soft drinks or wine. Ask them to bring a vegetable, fruit or relish tray, and let them know you’ll take care of the dip. Paper plates, silverware and napkins are a great thing to let others bring, as well! 

Cross Contact is a Real Concern

Not preparing the meal yourself? You’ll have to ask how the food was prepared. Did they make gluten free baked goods on a separate day, to prevent airborne flour cross contact? Was gluten free pasta cooked in a fresh, clean pot of water? Strained in a dedicated colander? Were preparation utensils kept separate from gluten filled dishes? 

A reminder during Christmas time. All gluten free cookie dough should be prepared, rolled and cut with dedicated utensils. Gluten free cookies and cakes should be frosted with separate spreaders/knives. Turkeys and game hens should only be stuffed with gluten free stuffing. Beware that most scalloped potato dishes contain flour. 

Uncomfortable Eating? Say No Thanks.

This is an important gluten free holiday tip. People mean well, especially at the holidays. Have you ever heard “But I made this just for you!” Regardless, if you’re not comfortable eating something, it’s ok to say no. This is especially true if we don’t want to ask questions about food prep. 

Sometimes if it’s something being offered to me as a gift, and it’s wrapped, I’ll simply take it home and give it to my husband. He gets something special, and I keep my health in check. No Explanation Required

Holiday gatherings can include longtime family and friends, as well as new faces. People may ask about your gluten free diet out of sheer curiosity. You can choose to explain, but please know you don’t have to. You can redirect the conversation onto a different topic. 

In addition, don’t worry about what others may think. Your physical and mental health is more important than one social gathering. Do your family members turn your gluten free diet into an issue? Sometimes boundaries have to be set. If they can’t kindly join with you, you may have to avoid getting together. You deserve to be respected. 

Beware MALT!

A reminder that barley malt is not one of the top 8 allergens. Therefore companies may not bring special attention to it on their labels. Remember that Kellogg Rice Krispies contain malt. In addition, candies with “crisped rice” likely contain gluten as well. (Such as Nestle Crunch.) Kellogg Corn Flakes contain malt as well. 

At Christmas time, a reminder that Lindt truffles contain barley malt as well. (Their white chocolate ones are gluten free.) In contrast, all Andes Mints are gluten free, including their candies with cookie crunch. Cello Chocolate Covered Cherries are made in a gluten and peanut free facility. 

Bring a Dish to Pass, and a Spoon

The best way to make sure you have “safe food” is to bring a dish to share. I recommend bringing a dish that contains protein, so you can have a “main course” item. Impress your friends and family by bringing a delicious gluten free dessert, as well. My Black Forest Trifle and my Gluten and Dairy Free Mocha Cake come to mind. 

Attending a potluck type of party? Ask the host if you can go first to avoid cross contact.  I also recommend bringing your own unique serving spoon, so others won’t be tempted to swap it to a different dish. A Facebook follower recommended “labeling dishes for anyone who may be have allergies. Such as ‘gluten free, nut free, contains dairy’ for example. I find labeling helps somewhat with cross contact.”

Practice That New Recipe, First

Planning on making a brand new recipe this holiday season? I highly recommend making a test batch prior to sharing with others. Especially if you’re making ANY ingredient substituions. (That includes a different GF flour blend than what the recipe creator used.) No one wants to plan a dish to bring that turns into a disaster. 

A Facebook follower also made this great point. “Don’t wait until the last minute to buy special ingredients, like gluten free flour!” Like Santa, check that ingredient list and check it twice. Make sure you’ve bought everything you need before the grocery stores before baking. (And before they close for the holidays!) 

One last “new recipe” gluten free holiday tip from a Facebook follower. “Whatever food you’re expecting to miss for the holidays, swap it out for something even more decadent with a similar flavor profile, and you won’t feel gipped at all. Can’t have your aunt’s brownies? Try flourless chocolate torte. Lemon bars? Make the shortbread crust with almond flour. Try rice stuffing with added onion, sausage, and chopped pecans.” 

Have a Backup (and Forward) Plan

Have you seen the following meme? “Living with Celiac Disease is like a Picnic. You literally bring your own food everywhere.” Those of us with food restrictions are known for our purses and bags full with ALL the snacks. Snack bars. Pre baked muffins. Our own slices of bread or buns. Prepare yourself with your own Celiac Safe stash. 

Another good gluten free holiday tip is to eat something before hand. This way you can focus more on the people around you than a grumbling stomach. I’ve been known to eat something filling at home, and then stop for gluten free French Fries after an event from Red Robin, Five Guys or Chick Fil A. 

Relax and Focus

The holiday season has become frantic and hectic, food or no food. Try to find ways to relax, destress, and simply focus on being with those you love. (And who love you in return!) As one of my Facebook followers said, “Don’t give food the power to steal your joy.”

Maybe instead of food gatherings, meet with friends and family for an activity. Have a girls day and get a massage. Go for a hike and end the day with a hot cocoa bar, like this one from Allergylicious. Gather friends (and funds) together and buy gifts for a non-profit and meet for coffee afterwards.  Giving to others always restores my joy and faith in humanity. 

Phone a Friend

Despite all of our preparation, things may still be less than perfect. I love the “Phone a Friend” suggestion from my friend Johnna’s 10 Tips for Softer Holidays post. “Designate a friend now that will agree to listen to you on the phone for 15 minutes while you decompress about the stress of your family gathering/work party/social function.” 

My Final Gluten Free Holiday Tip

This following was a comment left on my Facebook page. It was so good, I wanted to share it here. 

“There is no rule about eating holiday food only at the holidays. Keep yourself safe at events and consider having a separate day where you make your favorite dishes in a safe version. When we have an off weekend, I’ll make a scaled down version of the holiday meal. My family never complains and I end up with leftovers I can eat (and trust).”

“Also, asking a million questions makes me uncomfortable, so I’ll busy myself and eat what I can. I usually have a snack before and bring a dish I can eat, then focus on the veggie tray, etc.  Sometimes I’ll make a dish and a dessert, so I can be social over coffee at the end of the meal.”

Gluten Free Cookie Monster

I love cookies. I would eat them all day, every day if I could. While I will never turn down a chocolate chip cookie, I do have a fondness for a good sugar cookie. These gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies are so easy to make, they will fulfill any cookie craving.

Do You Know GF Jules?

You know what I love about GF Jules? (Besides her great mixes, like the graham cracker one I used to make these awesome Gluten-Free S’mores bars)  She’s so REAL. She’s down to earth and totally approachable. She answers her own e-mail and Facebook messages.

She’s been an encouragement to me and so many others. Did you know that she was involved in the mission of getting congress to improve gluten-free food labeling laws? All through persistence and the world’s tallest gluten-free cake. But I digress.

Best Cookie Cutters EVER

So back to these gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies. Even if you’re not a master cake decorator of baker like GF Jules, you can easily make these cookies. First, work with a good sugar cookie recipe. Next, work with good tools. I have quickly become a Wilton addict convert. I bought their 101 Cookie Cutter Set (affiliate link) over a decade ago.

The cookie cutters are made of durable plastic. More than fifteen years later, they still are cutting through dough, bread and any other soft items I want to get creative with. I LOVE that this particular set is color coded for holidays and themes. Orange for Halloween, green for Christmas, yellow for Easter and so forth.

Gluten Free Premade Frosting

Aren’t these ghost gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies just the cutest? Just a little bit of white frosting (I used Duncan Hines) and they pop. (I’d say “come alive,” but they are ghosts after all.) Should you want to make your own frosting, try this recipe for Gluten Free Royal Icing from Celiac Mama.

While one can use a sandwich bag in a pinch, I really prefer these Wilton Disposable Decorating Bags. They’re much thicker than a sandwich bag and withstand much more hand pressure. I usually use one of my Wilton decorating metal tips for this, but accidentally forgot to put the coupler in the bag. Know what? It was easier to handle without the tips!

My Best Decorating Tip

Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re a terrible decorator. Frosting these gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies really IS easy. If you can draw a straight line (or even if you can’t), you can do this. My biggest “tip” is to allow the point of the bag just barely touch the cookie. Pipe the frosting slowly until you get the hang of it.

For these gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies, I focused on outlining the cookies. Then I simply added frosting in the center of the cookie with a back and forth motion. Not sure how you want to decorate them? I’ll let you in on a blogger secret. Go look at Pinterest or do a Google image search of what you want to make. Look at images that seem doable for you and then HAVE FUN! Cookies should be fun!

So here are my gluten-free Halloween cut out cookies, all finished. Some of them were just how I envisioned, some are not. But that’s the beauty of making sugar cookies and frosting them. It’s the experience, the uniqueness. And no matter what they look like, they still taste delicious!
