<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently Wahlburgers opened in Flint, MI. After hearing great reviews from their other location, I was eager to try it for myself. If you love tater tots, you need to try this place! (Wahlburgers no longer exists in Michigan.) </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-menu-1-600x900.jpg" alt="wahlburgers menu" class="wp-image-7158" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-menu-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-menu-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are my gluten free options at Wahlburgers?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wahlburgers does not have a separate gluten free menu, nor markers on the main menu. They state that they have gluten free buns, bread and croutons at the bottom of their menu. Most burgers should be able to be prepared gluten free. In addition, they utilize a dedicated fryer for french fries and tater tots. Salads with gluten free croutons are available. Click on the <a href="https://wahlburgers.com/faq" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Allergen Information link on the FAQ page</a> for GF listings.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-original-burger-1-600x900.jpg" alt="wahlburgers original Our burger gluten free" class="wp-image-7159" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-original-burger-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-original-burger-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What steps do they take to prevent cross contact?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wahlburgers maintains a separate gluten free prep space in their kitchen. (Including dedicated gluten free fryers.) They serve gluten free burgers in a paper container, in addition to the regular basket. Also, gluten free burgers come out with the bottom separated from the top, as opposed to stacked with a pick thru it.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-tots-1-600x900.jpg" alt="wahlburgers gluten free tots" class="wp-image-7160" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-tots-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-tots-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tot-ally Delicious</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The verdict? I&#8217;d definitely return. (In fact, I already have.) Our server didn&#8217;t know all the answers to our questions. However, she made sure to ask the chef or upper management any questions she was unsure of. While the burger and tots were good, I really enjoyed the fries. They had a seasoning on them that was delicious!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-dessert-menu-1-600x900.jpg" alt="wahlburgers dessert menu" class="wp-image-7161" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-dessert-menu-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-dessert-menu-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wahlburgers&#8217; Gluten Free Dessert Options</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We ordered a coffee milkshake. (Not pictured as it was messy.) Since they offer gluten free bread, one can order the Grilled Fluffanutta gluten free. I imagine it would be awesome with a scoop of ice cream on top! They also serve alcoholic &#8220;adult frappes.&#8221; This includes a fluffanuttahh frappe made with marshmallow vodka and Créme de Banana</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-flint-arches-brothers-1-600x600.jpg" alt="wahlburgers flint arches Wahlburg brothers" class="wp-image-7162" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-flint-arches-brothers-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-flint-arches-brothers-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-flint-arches-brothers-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/wahlburgers-flint-arches-brothers-1-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Who Owns Wahlburgers?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Paul Wahlberg owns this restaurant, in partnership with his brothers Donnie and Marc Wahlberg. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently, my readers found my&nbsp;<a title="University of Michigan: Food Allergy Safe Haven" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/01/25/university-of-michigan-food-allergy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Michigan</a> and <a title="Dining Gluten Free at Michigan State University" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2018/05/30/dining-gluten-free-at-michigan-state-university/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan State University</a>&nbsp;dining hall posts to be helpful. Therefore, I jumped at the opportunity to visit the new Oakland University G8 dining stations. They offer students lots of options, in a pretty fantastic setting!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Letters-1-600x900.jpg" alt="Oakland University Letters" class="wp-image-6540" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Letters-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Letters-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Campus Full of Surprises</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If I could sum up my visit at Oakland University in one word, I would say, &#8220;surprised.&#8221; I previously failed to appreciate the expanse and beauty of the campus. I always thought of it as the little college I passed by on my way to Trader Joe&#8217;s. Boy, was I mistaken. (Oakland alum, please don&#8217;t hate on me for being oblivious!)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I recently visited Oakland University, with my plucky side reporter Mr. Gal. (Excellent note taker, that guy.) We meet up with Mark Mccormick, the resident district manager for Chartwells. Chartwells runs the food service program at Oakland University and <a href="https://www.dineoncampus.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">270 other universities</a> across the country.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Many Students?!?!</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="450" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Plum-Market-Kitchen-1-600x450.jpg" alt="Oakland University Plum Market Kitchen Station in Campus Center" class="wp-image-6541" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Plum-Market-Kitchen-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Plum-Market-Kitchen-1-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the Oakland University G8 dining stations initially drew me to campus, Mark provided us a fantastic tour of campus. We started in the Campus Center, which features a Chick Fil A (the first one in Michigan!), a Moe&#8217;s Southwestern Grill, and a <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/a-trip-to-ann-arbor-and-plum-marke/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Plum Market</a> station. Plum Market proudly serves <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/ethels-edibles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ethel&#8217;s Baking Company</a> Dandies!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From there we ventured to Vandenberg hall, the older dining hall on campus. They offer a variety of different options, in separate dining stations. Mark stated that 3,000 of Oakland University&#8217;s 20,000 students live on campus. Both on and off campus students use the dining halls.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What is G8?</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-G8-station-at-Vandenberg-Hall-1-600x900.jpg" alt="Oakland University G8 station at Vandenberg Hall" class="wp-image-6542" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-G8-station-at-Vandenberg-Hall-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-G8-station-at-Vandenberg-Hall-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mark thoroughly explained the Oakland University G8 dining stations to us. While other meals are prepared in a shared space, all meals prepared at G8 stations use their own separate cooking space. The name &#8220;G8&#8221; comes from the concept of being free from the 8 most common allergens, as well as gluten. Pretty spiffy. Staff even use separate, uniquely colored utensils to serve all meals in these stations.&nbsp;Their is a protein, starch, veg and a composed cold salad every lunch and dinner.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, they offer Udi&#8217;s gluten free bread and buns.&nbsp; They have a dedicated gluten free waffle maker and gluten free waffle batter. I totally could eat those for dinner, too! Dedicated, separate toasters are available at these stations as well. A sign hangs above them, explaining to other non-food allergy students that are for food allergy needs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do They Handle Other Allergens/Diets?</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Self-Identify-Allergens-Sign-1-600x800.jpg" alt="Oakland University Self Identify Allergens Sign" class="wp-image-6546" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Self-Identify-Allergens-Sign-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Self-Identify-Allergens-Sign-1-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Glad you asked. As stated on their website, they feel it is their responsibility to &#8220;provide safe and appropriate meals for all students on campus when possible.&#8221; They even offer to go the extra step and &#8220;create meals specific to each student’s needs.&#8221; Read more about this on their <a href="https://dineoncampus.com/oakland/food-allergies--special-diets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Special Diets</a> section of their website.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cooks offer halal chicken options at the Oakland University G8 stations, and kosher wraps are available elsewhere on campus. Stations at both Vandenberg and Hillcrest displays menu items, as well as highlight dietary restrictions in those meals. Students easily find this information on the school&#8217;s dining app.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Welcoming to All</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="450" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Fresh-52-station-1-600x450.jpg" alt="Busy $5 Friday and Michigan's Oakland University Hillcrest Dining Hall" class="wp-image-6544" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Fresh-52-station-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Oakland-University-Fresh-52-station-1-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fridays on campus are BUSY. Anyone can eat there, student or community member for only $5. And they&#8217;re open until 7 pm!! (These prices were as of 2019. I can&#8217;t find any updated prices on their website.) Despite that, everyone we talked to was just so NICE. Mark took time to talk to students. Chef Joey gave us his undivided attention as we asked further questions. I instantly felt at home there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chef Joey explained they don&#8217;t always offer gluten free desserts, but when they do, they get eaten quickly. I suggested he connect with Gluten Free Specialties in Rochester for some gluten free donuts. I appreciated how receptive he was to new ideas! He always encourages students to ask him questions and give honest feedback.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check out this article in Gluten Free Living magazine for more tips on <a href="https://www.glutenfreeliving.com/gluten-free-lifestyle/tips-advice/celiac-in-college-navigating-the-dining-hall/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Navigating the Dining Hall</a> while in college.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gluten Free Options Outside of Campus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking to venture off campus? Whether dining alone or as a family, Rochester offers many gluten free dining options. Close to campus you&#8217;ll find <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/buddys-pizza-gluten-free-detroit-style/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Buddy&#8217;s Pizza</a>, <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/jersey-mikes-gluten-free-subs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jersey Mike&#8217;s</a> and <a href="https://www.gomongo.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BD&#8217;s Mongolian BBQ</a>. Down the street at The Village of Rochester Hills, eateries include Chipotle, Bravo! Cucina Italiana, Mitchell&#8217;s Fish Market and P.F. Chang&#8217;s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking to do some gluten free grocery shopping? Wander through Whole Foods at the Village, or go across the street to <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/trader-joes-gluten-free-finds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trader Joe&#8217;s</a>. You&#8217;ll also find <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/celiac-specialties/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gluten Free Specialties</a> in Rochester, Michigan&#8217;s longest operated, dedicated gluten free bakery! <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eating out often poses a challenge when living with Celiac Disease. Now imagine being in college, relying on others to cook every meal for you, safely. Due to this, campus dining remains an important deciding factor in choosing a college when living with a food allergy or intolerance. With their recent addition to the <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/our-initiatives/education-programs-training/fare-food-allergy-college-search" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">FARE College Food Allergy Program</a>, eating gluten free at Michigan State University has become even easier.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="338" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-Michigan-State-Univeristy-Brody-Hall-1-600x338.jpg" alt="gluten free at Michigan State University Brody Hall" class="wp-image-4982" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-Michigan-State-Univeristy-Brody-Hall-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-Michigan-State-Univeristy-Brody-Hall-1-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I recently toured Michigan State University with their resident dietitian, Gina Keilen. Prior to her joining the staff, MSU lagged behind in being food allergy conscious. About the same time Gina was hired, executive chef Bryan Latz also joined the staff. They, along with the corporate chef Kurt Kwiatkowski, revamped the menu campus-wide. Now the 45,000 meals daily served on campus are prepared with food allergies and intolerances in mind. They create menus focused on using as few allergens as possible.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only is it safe to eat gluten free at Michigan State University, those with additional allergens and preferences are accommodated as well. In addition to labeling for the <a title="3 Places Kids Need Us to Be Food Allergy Conscious" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2018/05/09/3-places-food-allergy-conscious/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Top 8 allergens</a>, meal menus also note if dishes contain coconut, sesame, beef, pork, and alcohol. MSU takes the health of the students and staff very seriously. In addition, MSU recently became home to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams,<a href="https://frib.msu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> a.k.a the FRIB</a>. As only the second such facility in the world, the dining staff realized they feed not just students, but researchers from across the world. Michigan State University seeks to feed all, regardless of food allergy, disability or religious preference.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Statistics on eating with Celiac Disease and/or Food Allergy On Campus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This forethought is necessary. In 2016, only two years ago, Beyond Celiac reported that most students <a href="https://www.beyondceliac.org/living-with-celiac-disease/college/most-college-students-cant-eat-safely/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">feel that can&#8217;t eat safely on campus</a>. Beyond Celiac stated that forty-two percent of college students surveyed stated they felt college personnel were not knowledgeable about gluten free needs. In addition, thirty percent of students reported missing class at least once in their college career due to accidental gluten ingestion. Finally, Beyond Celiac states that sixty percent of students said they would not recommend the university they attended. Therefore, colleges need to make dietary restrictions a priority.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-AllerTrain-Certificate-1-600x900.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Dining at Michigan State University AllerTrain Certificate" class="wp-image-4983" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-AllerTrain-Certificate-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-AllerTrain-Certificate-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keeping gluten free dining at Michigan State University starts with the head chefs, but doesn&#8217;t stop there. ALL kitchen staff undergo training through <a href="https://www.allertrain.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AllerTrain</a>, which has been easier to accomplish since joining the FARE program. This certification requires renewal every five years. As all menus are based with food allergies and intolerances in mind, staff know that recipes must be followed to the T. This insures that any dish, regardless of which dining hall you&#8217;re in, keeps it free of gluten or allergens as specified on the <a href="https://eatatstate.msu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Eat At State website</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gina stated many staff deal with Celiac Disease or food allergies and intolerances in their own life. This is personal. They know first hand the anxiety that comes with trusting others to cook your food. To rely on someone else with your health. Therefore, they gladly wash their hands, change their gloves, and do whatever they can to help accommodate your health needs. So please don&#8217;t be embarrassed to ask. Please tell staff what you need. Gina Keilen, the head dietitian reports the failure of students to disclose their needs it the biggest hindrance in helping students safe.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In fact, tell Gina regularly meets with students with food restrictions. During a student&#8217;s orientation, she will set up a time answer any and all questions about dining gluten free at Michigan State University. She regularly checks in on students throughout the year, and holds small forums to meet with fellow students with dietary issues. She even helps students work with housing services to try to pair them with students living through the same dietary struggles. During my visit, Gina was even approached by someone newly diagnosed with Celiac Disease AND additional allergens. Gina didn&#8217;t miss a beat and immediately reviewed with her the food options she has and the services available to her.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Let&#8217;s Eat! What to order gluten free at Michigan State University</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So enough back story. What CAN you eat if you&#8217;re dining gluten free at Michigan State University? For starters, sushi. Yes, sushi, complete with gluten tamari. MSU made with switch from regular soy sauce to tamari when they realized how much more accessible it would be to those with Celiac Disease. Also, all soups on campus are made with bases that are gluten, soy and dairy free. (This does not guarantee the final recipe is free of all those ingredients.) Need things nut free? <a href="https://eatatstate.msu.edu/menu/Holden%20Dining%20Hall/all/2018-05-28" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Holden Hall</a> and Holmes Hall have kitchens that use NO peanuts, tree nuts or coconut in any of their dishes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="337" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Ciao-Station-1-600x337.jpg" alt="Gluten Free at Michigan State University Brody Hall Ciao Station" class="wp-image-4984" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Ciao-Station-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Ciao-Station-1-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My favorite hall to dine gluten free at Michigan State University is Brody Hall. The amount of options practically boggles the mind. Up until recently, Brody Hall remained the largest non-military dining hall in the United States. (Recent renovations at <a title="University of Michigan: Food Allergy Safe Haven" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/01/25/university-of-michigan-food-allergy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">University of Michigan, also in the FARE program</a>, edged them out for that title.) Brody Hall has multiple themed stations from which you can order some of your favorites. Ciao has gluten free pizza made from fresh toppings, and Brimstone has gluten free buns for hamburgers. In addition, it has the biggest and most amazing salad bar I&#8217;ve ever seen.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="338" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Salad-Bar-1-600x338.jpg" alt="Gluten Free at Michigan State University Brody Hall Salad Bar" class="wp-image-4985" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Salad-Bar-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-at-Michigan-State-University-Brody-Hall-Salad-Bar-1-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brody Hall also has a completely vegetarian station, called VegOut. In addition, Monday through Friday, a completely Kosher food station serves locally prepared kosher cuisine. Cayenne&#8217;s offers Latin American foods, including corn tortillas. Boiling Point offers gluten free pasta, and Homestyle offers baked chicken and potatoes. Can&#8217;t tolerate dairy? Brody Hall offers the largest soy and almond milk dispenses I&#8217;ve ever seen. In addition, Michigan State University stocks dairy free shredded cheese for pizzas and salads and sandwiches. Living with multiple food allergies?&nbsp; You can collaborate with Gina and the Chefs to coordinate an individualized program for you. This often involves calling 30 minutes prior to arriving to the dining hall, and the team will prepare a meal specifically for you. They will also bring it to you when you arrive in the dining hall.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Dining Halls at Michigan State University</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are many more dining halls on campus where you can safely eat gluten free at Michigan State University. Case Hall is the more recently renovated hall and has ample seating. There (as in all other halls) you will find a small fridge stocked with specialty gluten free items, such as Udi&#8217;s bread and buns and cookies. Some students with food restrictions prefer to eat at Holden Hall. This older and smaller dining hall follows all the same protocols. However, it gets less foot traffic, and allows diners to ask more questions. The gallery at Snyder Phillips, aesthetically, is my favorite open dining hall. Just use the filters at the Eat At State website to help you find what&#8217;s safe to eat anywhere on camp.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wanting to cook for yourself? Visit <a href="https://eatatstate.msu.edu/node/188031" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sparty&#8217;s Market</a> at 1855 Place on Harrison Road. This small grocery stores has some of the most amazing options for gluten free at Michigan State University. Find Udi&#8217;s bread and buns for making sandwiches at home. They stock a large selection of Bob&#8217;s Red Mill products, as well as 1-2-3 Gluten Free baking mixes. Plus, Sparty&#8217;s Place immediately won over my heart by stocking Michigan-made Ethel&#8217;s Baking Company decadent desserts.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="338" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-Spartys-Market-gluten-free-mixes-1-600x338.jpg" alt="Gluten Free at Michigan State University Sparty's Market gluten free mixes (1)" class="wp-image-4987" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-Spartys-Market-gluten-free-mixes-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Gluten-Free-Dining-at-Michigan-State-University-Spartys-Market-gluten-free-mixes-1-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A quick note about desserts. While the dining halls serve <a title="Hanging out with Hudsonville" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2015/06/30/hanging-out-with-hudsonville/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hudsonville hard scooped ice cream</a> and soft serve, every stop at MSU needs to include the MSU Dairy Store. Did you know you can actually watch them make ice cream from the observation deck in Anthony Hall? Staff there is FANTASTIC about pulling out fresh tubs of ice cream to prevent cross contact with other flavors. I&#8217;ve visited numerous times and never has an employee balked at generously meeting my needs in this way. This is why I list them as one of the<a title="8 Great Michigan Gluten-Free Ice Cream Parlors" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/06/17/8-great-michigan-gluten-free-ice-crea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> great places to get ice cream in Michigan</a>!</p>

<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-michigan-state-university-dairy-store-1-600x900.jpg" alt="gluten free at michigan state university dairy store" class="wp-image-4988" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-michigan-state-university-dairy-store-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/gluten-free-at-michigan-state-university-dairy-store-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Intentional Dining for the Community</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All these precautions for gluten free dining at Michigan State University is not for students alone. MSU is easily the largest employer in East Lansing, Michigan. Therefore, they see themselves as a meeting place for community. So take a bike ride along the Red Cedar River and stop in for lunch. Take in a midday basketball game and stop in for dinner. Stop in for Sunday Supper after church or meet up with your card club for brunch. Send your son or daughter for one of the many academic and sports camps offered here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Have you or a child been to Michigan State University? Are you considering them as a potential location for their future college career? Please feel free to <a href="https://eatatstate.msu.edu/contactus">call or email staff</a> to ask them any questions you have. A big thank you to Gina Keilen and Bryan Latz and the rest of the chef staff for generously giving of their time and resources so I could share first hand about what it&#8217;s like eating gluten free at Michigan State University.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>** I was given passes for a free meal for myself and my spouse. No other form of compensation was given regarding this write-up, and all thoughts and opinions are my own. Born and raised in Lansing, I love MSU and the amazing opportunities it affords to its students. Go Green, Go White.**</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One can aptly describe the gluten-free dining scene in Grand Rapids as &#8220;phenomenal.&#8221; Seriously, I start salivating when I think of <a title="Gluten-Free Grand Rapids- Endless Opportunities" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/07/08/gluten-free-grand-rapids-endless/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">all the great restaurants I&#8217;ve tried there</a>. Recently, the owners of Herb and Fire Pizzeria invited to me to try their build &#8211; your &#8211; own pizza joint. After asking extensive questions about the steps they take to prevent cross -contact, we loaded up the van and headed east.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At first glance, you may think &#8220;BYO&#8221; means &#8220;bring your own.&#8221; However, in this case it means &#8220;Build Your Own.&#8221; Haven&#8217;t been to a place like this? Think of it like Subway, except you pick your crust and toppings, and then they bake it. While the &#8220;build your own&#8221; pizza idea isn&#8217;t new, Herb and Fire Pizzeria holds one unique factor. Grand Rapids locals own this joint. No massive national corporate structure, but organized and run by the <a href="https://www.uccellos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uccello&#8217;s </a>family. When I visited Herb and Fire Pizzeria, an actual Uccello&#8217;s family member managed the restaurant and made my pizza. Love that level of accessibility to management.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Pizza-sauced-1.jpg" alt="Herb and Fire Pizzeria Gluten Free Pizza sauced" class="wp-image-4685" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Pizza-sauced-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Pizza-sauced-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So let&#8217;s talk gluten-free pizza process, shall we? At Herb and Fire Pizzeria, they use Udi&#8217;s gluten-free and dairy-free pizza crust. (While dairy-free, it is not vegan, as it contains egg whites.) They will gladly retrieve fresh sauce and toppings from the back, if you ask. (I did suggest to management that they may want to do that as standard practice when they are alerted that a customer has Celiac Disease. Not every one will think &#8211; or feel comfortable- to ask for that accommodation.) Workers change gloves prior to building your pizza, and place it on a smaller screen that is not used for regular pizzas. It is baked in a smaller conveyor oven, separate from the wood fired oven for their regular pizzas.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Order-Board-1.jpg" alt="Herb and Fire Pizzeria Gluten Free Order Board" class="wp-image-4686" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Order-Board-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Order-Board-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can create your own pizza for $9.95, or order one of their signature pizzas if your creativity eludes you. (Gluten-free pizzas do incur a $2 upcharge.) My husband and I joined two friends, who belong to the Grand Rapids area celiac disease Facebook group. (The group used to meet in person, but no longer does.) There were so many options, we chose to go with some of the signature pizzas. My husband and Emma both ordered the Vegetale. This pizzas comes sauced with pesto and topped with &#8220;charred artichokes, grilled broccoli, roasted tomatoes, Sicilian olives, grilled red onion, mozzarella, gorgonzola and basil.&#8221;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Emmas-Pizza-1.jpg" alt="Herb and Fire Pizzeria Gluten Free Vegetale Pizza" class="wp-image-4687" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Emmas-Pizza-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Emmas-Pizza-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I ordered the Vestito De Blanco. Topped with a white pizza sauce that staff assured me contained no gluten, this pizza comes loaded with with some of my favorite things. On top of the sauce, one finds &#8220;grilled zucchini, applewood smoked bacon, garlic wilted spinach, roasted tomatoes, mozzarella and Romano.&#8221; It tasted pretty great. I told myself I didn&#8217;t need to eat a whole pizza. However after a long meeting at camp and having not eaten anything in about 6 hours, that pizza didn&#8217;t stand a chance to my level of hunger.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-My-Pizza-1.jpg" alt="Herb and Fire Pizzeria Gluten Free Pizza " class="wp-image-4688" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-My-Pizza-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-My-Pizza-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We all agreed it was a great option to have. Located near <a href="https://www.meijergardens.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Frederik Meijer Gardens</a> and Celebration Cinemas, it becomes a place where one with Celiac Disease can eat out with other friends in a fast casual atmosphere. Especially on Thursdays, when Herb and Fire Pizzeria offers $2 off their gluten-free and vegan pizzas. (They offer Daiya cheese for those wanting a dairy-free pizza.) Each day they boast a happy hour from 8 pm &#8211; close. Deals include $2 lemonades, half off (non-gf) drafts, $3 cheesy breadsticks and $5 1-topping pizzas. Every Wednesday, they host trivia night and offer discounts for medical personnel (with scrubs or ID.) Safe to say, Herb and Fire Pizzeria is a pretty happening place.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Specialty-Lemonades-1.jpg" alt="Herb and Fire Pizzeria Gluten Free Specialty Lemonades" class="wp-image-4689" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Specialty-Lemonades-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Herb-and-Fire-Specialty-Lemonades-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One other thing of note. Herb and Fire Pizzeria has some seriously unique beverages. They infuse their Herb &amp; Berries Lemonade with blackberries, basil and mint. The Herb &amp; Fire Lemonade includes notes of strawberries, basil and &#8220;a hint of chili peppers.&#8221; While they were not my proverbial &#8220;cup of tea,&#8221; they are creative! They also have <a href="https://www.ujcidermill.com/taproom" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Uncle John&#8217;s Hard Cider</a> and <a href="https://whiteclaw.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">White Claw Hard Seltzer</a> in cans. So while we may not be able to enjoy the Foster&#8217;s or Bell&#8217;s they may have on tap that night, you can still order an adult beverage with your pizza!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, our pizza was good. Christy and Emma, who are highly sensitive to gluten, enjoyed their meal and experienced no after effects. I was gassy after eating mine. However, that may have been due more to the hefty dose of pureed beans I had the night before instead of this pizza. I watched them closely every single step through preparation, and they followed all the right protocols. For the highly reasonable price and the ability to join friends on a fun night out, I&#8217;d definitely try it again.</p>

Please remember to always ask any restaurant about their<a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2018/08/08/dining-out-gluten-free-questions/"> food preparation practices</a>. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">**Neither my husband or I were charged for our meals, however all thoughts and opinions are my own. My husband did enjoy a regular beer with his meal, for which we paid full price.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traveling to South Dakota? In 2017, my husband and I traveled cross country, in a Uhaul, to help our friends move. In this post, I share about the food I took with me, and the places we ate along the way.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Maggie-and-Niki-min.jpg" alt="My friend Niki and her family precipitated our Sioux Falls gluten-free adventure" class="wp-image-3952"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#8217;s so much beauty in this photo. There&#8217;s the visual beauty of the Falls for which the city Sioux Falls gets its name. Then there&#8217;s the beauty of a deep friendship of the two women pictured. We share a decade of smiles, hugs, tears, laughter and so much more.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My husband and I recently drove a 20 ft Uhaul, loaded with our friend&#8217;s possessions and treasures, 800+ miles from Michigan to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Traveling with a food restriction makes travel a bit tricky sometimes, but it should never stop you from enjoying life and spending time with those you love. Today I&#8217;m sharing some of my travel tips and finds from our recent Sioux Falls Gluten-Free adventure.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BYOB and Other Assorted Foods</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="393" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Udis-Bagel-min.jpg" alt="Udi's Bagels were a staple on our Sioux Falls Gluten-Free Adventure" class="wp-image-3953" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Udis-Bagel-min.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Udis-Bagel-min-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">BYOB. Bring Your Own Bagel. When traveling anywhere, I highly suggest bringing your own stash of food. When we set out for our Sioux Falls gluten-free adventure, we did so with a cooler packed with food and a bag of groceries. I even brought my own toaster, along with <a href="https://www.udisglutenfree.com/bagels-english-muffins/everything-bagels">Udi&#8217;s Everything</a> bagels. This way I knew that regardless of where we stayed, I could easily eat breakfast.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It would take a while for our friends to set up their kitchen, so I also brought a heavy duty large mug. I used it to microwave hot cereal for breakfast. I also used it to make <a href="https://www.annies.com/products/gluten-free-rice-pasta-cheddar-microwavable-mac-cup">Annie&#8217;s gluten-free macaroni and cheese</a>. In addition, I&nbsp; made sure to bring along a small plastic bag with a dish cloth and dish soap. I also brought along easy meals I premade at home, such as a pasta salad and calzones. Because of this, I made sure each hotel room we stayed in contained a microwave and refrigerator.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Fare</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="491" height="713" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Comfort-Inn-GF-Bread-min.jpg" alt="At the Comfort Inn located in Sioux Falls Gluten-Free bread is offered as part of the continental breakfast" class="wp-image-3945" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Comfort-Inn-GF-Bread-min.jpg 491w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Comfort-Inn-GF-Bread-min-207x300.jpg 207w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We stayed at Comfort Inn hotels throughout our entire trip. Each hotel had eggs for breakfast each morning, either hard boiled or scrambled.&nbsp; They also had Greek yogurt and fresh fruit, which we made sure to load up on. I was the most impressed with the <a href="https://www.choicehotels.com/south-dakota/sioux-falls/comfort-inn-hotels/sd099?source=gyxt" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sioux Falls location</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you see the sign above this toaster? It says GF bread! Of course, I didn&#8217;t notice this until our last day there. They stock <a title="The New Schar Artisan Bread – Making Sandwiches Great Again" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2015/08/24/new-schar-artisan-bread/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Schar Artisan white bread</a> that they keep in the freezer, and will thaw for you upon request. My last morning there I used one of my <a href="https://amzn.to/2yFX0iz" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toaster Bags</a> in their toaster. These non-flammable, reusable bags allow you to put your gluten-free bread in any toaster and prevent cross-contact with crumbs from other breads. You can use them to make grilled cheese in your toaster too!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pizza Ranch</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="500" height="699" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Pizza-Ranch-min-1.jpg" alt="PIzza Rancn offers those with Celiac Disease in Sioux Falls gluten-free pizza" class="wp-image-3940" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Pizza-Ranch-min-1.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Pizza-Ranch-min-1-215x300.jpg 215w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, the most intriguing part of our Sioux Falls gluten-free adventure involves eating out. Prior to leaving, I made sure to do my research. One of the restaurants listed on the Find Me Gluten Free app was <a href="https://pizzaranch.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pizza Ranch</a>. This pizza buffet chain dots the midwest landscape, with locations existing in the greater Grand Rapids area all the way to South Dakota.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They assured me that all gluten-free pizzas were made in their own prep space, with their own dedicated toppings. Pizzas were made in their own pans and served with their own utensils. While it is possible to have one made and placed on the buffet, they brought mine directly to our table.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Pizza Ranch location we visited had an extensive salad bar, and the staff provided me a gluten-free menu to see which dressings and sides were gluten-free. They served Ken&#8217;s individual salad dressing packets, which provided less chance of cross-contact. I felt fine after eating there Monday night, so now I&#8217;m tempted to check out the locations in Michigan. The staff said that the gluten-free protocols should be available nationwide.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Original Pancake House</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="393" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Choc-Chip-Pancakes-min-1.jpg" alt="At The Original Pancake House in Sioux Falls Gluten-Free pancakes are always on the menu" class="wp-image-3941" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Choc-Chip-Pancakes-min-1.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Choc-Chip-Pancakes-min-1-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next on our Sioux Falls gluten-free culinary adventure, <a href="https://originalpancakehousesiouxfalls.com/gluten-free/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Original Pancake House</a>. When this location was first suggested to me by others, I admit my hesitation to believe them. However, I called the restaurant and felt pleasantly surprised to learn they cook gluten-free items on a dedicated griddle. Any flavor of pancakes or omelettes were open to me. When we stopped for lunch with our friends, I eagerly ordered the chocolate chip pancakes with a side of peanut butter. Pancakes also come with maple syrup, chocolate syrup and fresh whipped cream.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="500" height="701" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Souffle-Omelette-min-1.jpg" alt="Corned Beef Souflle Omelette at Sioux Fall Gluten-Free find, the Original Pancake House" class="wp-image-3942" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Souffle-Omelette-min-1.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Original-Pancake-House-Souffle-Omelette-min-1-214x300.jpg 214w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, my husband&#8217;s breakfast really impressed me! While the picture may not be a show stopper, the food definitely was! He ordered the Souffle Irish Omelette. Loaded with &#8220;homemade corned beef hash and aged cheddar,&#8221; it blew my mind. Seriously, this omelette it the size of your head, and comes with 3 pancakes, all available gluten-free. I was also impressed with the care of the staff as we explained my husband&#8217;s pork intolerance. They took care to make sure to not cook his omelette where bacon or other forms of pork had been.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Culver&#8217;s</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="612" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Culvers-Collage.jpg" alt="Sioux Falls Gluten-Free Culver&quot;s" class="wp-image-3949" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Culvers-Collage.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Culvers-Collage-300x262.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Culver&#8217;s isn&#8217;t really a new Sioux Falls gluten-free find. In fact, I&#8217;ve written about <a title="Culver’s Gluten-Free Buns are a Huge Hit" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2015/03/13/culvers-has-gluten-free-buns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Culver&#8217;s and their individually wrapped gluten-free buns</a> before on my blog. However, it does make for a quick and safe meal where everyone can find something that they love. Especially Levi, our friends&#8217; middle child, who has a love affair with green beans. I love them too, which is good because the fries at Culver&#8217;s are not gluten-free. (They use a shared fryer.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the custard at Culver&#8217;s IS gluten-free, and suitable for one of their Concrete Mixers. Instead of having them use the machine to blend mine, they layered my Andes Mint Chips in the ice cream and gave it a few pumps of chocolate sauce. Then I simply used my own spoon to stir it all up. (The Andes Mint Chips are made in a dedicated gluten-free and nut-free facility, and are perfect in these <a title="Gluten-Free Triple Mint Brownies" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2017/08/30/gluten-free-triple-mint-brownies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gluten-free triple mint brownies</a>!)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Culver&#8217;s is one of only a handful of fast food establishments where I feel safe eating. Other safe finds for me include Wendy&#8217;s chili and baked potatoes, Chick-Fil-A grilled nuggets and fries, and BiBiBop Asian Grill which is 100% gluten free. One can also safely get fries at Five Guys, as they do not have a shared fryer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Coffee, Coffee and More Coffee</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="393" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Coffea-Chai-Latte-min.jpg" alt="Our Sioux Falls Gluten-Free trip involved a new local coffee shop everyday. This chai latte at Coffea was beautiful. " class="wp-image-3944" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Coffea-Chai-Latte-min.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Coffea-Chai-Latte-min-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Obviously safe food is paramount for me when traveling. My husband is gracious to allow us to try new restaurants based on my needs wherever we go. In return, I try to make sure he experiences his favorite thing: coffee. So while on our Sioux Falls gluten-free expedition, we made sure to visit unique coffee shops on our trip.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Sioux Falls we stopped at <a href="https://coffearoasterie.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Coffea Roasterie</a>. This third wave coffee house roasts their own beans and makes their own syrups and concentrates. Coffee and I don&#8217;t like each other, so I enjoyed a chai tea latte. If you&#8217;re dairy-free, you can also get it made with soy or almond milk.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hy-Vee</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="393" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-HyVee-GF-Bread-Selection-min.jpg" alt="Hy Viee is a Sioux Falls Gluten-Free wonderland!" class="wp-image-3943" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-HyVee-GF-Bread-Selection-min.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-HyVee-GF-Bread-Selection-min-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When attending multiple gluten-free food shows, people always rave about <a href="https://www.hy-vee.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hy-Vee.</a> While Hy-Vee is not a restaurant, it was definitely a &#8220;must visit&#8221; for me during our Sioux Falls gluten-free adventure. Hy-Vee staffs almost every store with an actual dietitian, which is practically unheard of today.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I spoke to one as I tried to find the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/heartofthecitybakery/">Heart of The City Bakery</a> gluten-free baked goods, which are from a local dedicated gluten-free baker. She was so nice and generous with her time. Beyond that, the gluten-free selection at this Hy-Vee was amazing. Two whole freezer doors full of gluten-free bread?! You&#8217;ll find that and so much more, including Michigan-made <a title="Full Flavor Foods Gluten-Free Sauce Mixes" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/02/29/full-flavor-foods/">Full Flavor Foods</a> sauce mixes. If your travels put you near a Hy-Vee, stop just for the fun of it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Gluten Free Bakery Options</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since our travels, a new gluten free bakery has opened in Sioux Falls. <a href="https://www.sinlesssweetssf.com/">Sinless Sweets</a> is a dedicated gluten free and vegan bakery. There you&#8217;ll find delicious gluten free pastries like apple turnovers, Cookies + Cream Cheesecake, layered cakes and more. Another new business is <a href="https://glutenfreepleasemixes.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Gluten Free, Please</a>, which sells gluten free mixes. They are made in a gluten free and peanut free facility, and are gluten free, soy free, dairy free, nut free and yeast free. Find them at local farmers markets.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="393" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Cookie-Jar-Eatery.jpg" alt="In Sioux Falls Gluten-Free ingredients are used to make some of the items at The Cooke Jar Eatery " class="wp-image-3954" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Cookie-Jar-Eatery.jpg 700w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sioux-Falls-Gluten-Free-Cookie-Jar-Eatery-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Honorable Mentions</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our trip focused mainly on our time with friends, so we didn&#8217;t have an extensive amount of time to eat out. We spent a morning wandering downtown, and stepped into <a href="http://www.cookiejarsd.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Cookie Jar Eatery</a>. The Find Me Gluten Free app stated that they have gluten-free baked goods.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I briefly talked to the baker on duty and they explained that gluten-free baking takes place on a dedicated day after they have extensively cleaned everything. They also test all of their gluten-free baked goods to make sure they meet the definition of under 20 PPM. Not being a dedicated gluten-free facility, you would have to decide on your own level of safety. However, it may be worth a stop while on your own Sioux Falls gluten-free escapade.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Other Gluten Free Dining Options in Sioux Falls, SD</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.experiencesiouxfalls.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sioux Falls Visitors Bureau</a> also suggested the following places, although I have not contacted them to verify their preparation methods.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.experiencesiouxfalls.com/">Sanaa&#8217;s</a>, <a href="https://www.minervas.net/menus" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Minerva&#8217;s</a>, <a href="https://www.phillipsavenuediner.com/menus/#gluten-free">Phillips Ave. Diner</a>, <a href="https://www.camillessiouxfalls.com/rice-bowls">Camilles&#8217;s</a>, and <a href="https://order.mackenzieriverpizza.com/menu/sioux-falls" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">MacKenzie River Pizza</a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Other Gluten Free Eateries We Visited During Our Travels</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our way to Sioux Falls, we also stopped at <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/alt-brew-dedicated-gluten-free-beer/">Alt Brew</a> in Madison, Wisconsin. This dedicated gluten free brewery has wonderful beer and a great atmosphere. We also stopped at <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/twigs-tavern-and-grille-gluten-free/">Twigs Tavern and Grille</a> in Rochester, Minnesota. This amazing restaurant has a separate gluten free kitchen, and a FOUR page gluten free menu. Including ravioli and dessert!&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So thus ends our South Dakota gluten-free adventure. Now we&#8217;re back home, fighting the good fight in Flint. Now Sioux Falls gains a family, fighting for grace, love and mercy in their community. From Michigan to South Dakota, may we all come to know how loved we are. And may we be the ones brave enough to love others with abandon, showing them the beauty they hold within.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>I was not paid or compensated in any way by the businesses mentioned on this list. All thoughts and opinions are my own.</em></p>
