Aren’t Trader Joe’s and Aldi the Same?

People often (incorrectly) assume Trader Joe’s and Aldi have the same parent company. The two businesses were separately owned by two German brothers. Originally the brothers jointly owned Aldi in Germany. However, after a difference of opinion, they amicably split the company into Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord.

Aldi Nord acquired the Trader Joe’s chain that started in California. Aldi Sud operates the Aldi locations in the United States. Confusing?  The Kitchn further explains the Aldi and Trader Joe’s connection, for those who want to dig deeper. However, like Aldi, Trader Joe’s relies on separate manufacturers to make their products, placed in Trader Joe’s packaging. The practice is often called “private label.”

Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Labeling Guidelines

Trader Joe’s website states “If you see “Gluten Free”on a Trader Joe’s product, this means that the product has been validated to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten (or made in a certified gluten free facility). Individuals with Celiac Disease or Gluten Sensitivity must avoid gluten for their health.”

Some people, myself included, choose to eat some items not specifically labeled gluten free, based on ingredients. Trader Joe’s has stated in past emails, “We do have many products that are made in facilities that don’t process gluten, even though it’s not labeled gluten free. Generally, [the reason it’s not labeled] is because the supplier doesn’t want to pay for certification.”

Gluten Free Bread & Baked Goods

Trader Joe’s stocks gluten free white sandwich bread and gluten free whole grain bread. Many people declare this to be their favorite gluten free bread.

They also sell gluten free bagels, and I especially love the “Almost Everything” Bagels. Not a fan of “everything”? They sell plain gluten free bagels as well. Every fall people look forward to the gluten free pumpkin bagels from Trader Joe’s.

This small Gluten Free Yellow Mini Sheet Cake from Trader Joe’s is SO good. My husband and I bought this to celebrate our anniversary, just the two of us.

Gluten Free Cookies

People LOVE Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Joe Joe’s cookies. The gluten free chocolate chunk cookies pictured below are definitely a fan favorite. They also have gluten free oatmeal cookies as well. They stock many more gluten free treats than I can picture here. **Update- The Gluten Free Joe Joe’s now contain oat flour.

Gluten Free Frozen Foods

This highly popular Gluten Free Cauliflower Gnocchi is now labeled gluten free. I really like Iowa Girl Eats’ tips on cooking cauliflower gnocchi. Trader Joe’s also sells cauliflower and butternut squash pizza crusts, which ARE labeled gluten free.

I have not personally tried these gluten free chicken nuggets. I know my friend Amanda of Eat at Our Table loves them, as do the rest of her family.

You’ll find many Trader Joe’s gluten free foods in the freezer section. This gluten free macaroni and cheese works great in a pinch. They also stock a gluten free cheese pizza, and a gluten free Chicken Tikka Masala. There are also many other items, again not specifically labeled gluten free, that contain no gluten ingredients.

Don’t forget breakfast. These gluten free toaster waffles are way cheaper than the name brand ones you find in other stores. They also sell gluten free (and dairy free!) frozen pancakes.

Gluten Free Cereal & Grains

Can’t Eat Oats? Then you’ll love this gluten free and grain free granola from Trader Joe’s. It does contain almonds, so if you have a tree nut allergy you will want to avoid this.

Gluten Free Dry Goods & Spices

You can stock your pantry will all sorts of gluten free goodness at Trader Joe’s. They sell their own gluten free all purpose flour blend, as well as almond flour. In addition, they stock various mixes. Their gluten free pancakes mix is an old standard.

While the Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Brownie Mix is a permanent product at the store, their website says the Ube Mochi pancake and Waffle Mix is a limited item. (But I swear I see it there all year round.)

At this point, I think the words “Everything But The Bagel” are synonymous with  Trader Joe’s. On top of the famous seasoning blend, they how have Everything but the Bagel smoked salmon and Everything but the Bagel yogurt dip.

This is not listed on the Trader Joe’s gluten free list, however none of their spices do either.  However, I consume this, their baking powder, and cocoa all  without issue.

While these Trader Joe’s Fried Shallots are not specifically labeled gluten free, they have only two ingredients – Shallots and Palm Oil. These are a great substitute for French Fried Onions at Thanksgiving.

Gluten Free Fresh Foods

For those who are wondering, Trader Joe’s offers a wide variety of fresh foods. Produce, bagged salads, a large cheese selection, dairy and non-dairy alternatives and eggs.

This fresh gluten free fettuccine is popular with so many people. If you liked the ones during the Aldi Gluten Free Special Buys this year, I’m 99.9% certain this is the exact same manufacturer, which is Taste Republic.

I love that Trader Joe’s offers a plain gluten free ravioli year round. I have a video where I make breaded and air fried ravioli. These would be PERFECT for that recipe. In the fall, Trader Joe’s also sells a gluten free pumpkin ravioli.

This gluten free pizza dough can be a huge time saver. It’s sold fresh, not frozen, so you don’t need to wait for it to thaw.

Gluten Free Snacks

So many tasty gluten free snacks abound at Trader Joe’s. Some are unique, like this Gluten Free Sweet and Spicy Rice Cracker Mix.

In addition, they sell some fun potato chip flavors, some of which are seasonal. These Ranch Flavor Rolled Corn Tortillas chips are SO much fun to eat!

Gluten Free Seasonal Items

Just like Aldi, every season new Trader Joe’s gluten free finds hit the shelves. Everyone’s excited about the fall offerings every year, including this gluten free pumpkin pancake mix, and their gluten free pumpkin bread mix. In addition you’ll find their maple butter, apple cider jam, and new gluten free pumpkin bagels at this time.

These Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie Spice Donut Holes are a newer item. They are SO good. I could easily eat them all in one sitting if left to my own devices. They also sell gluten free chocolate donut holes year round.

Different seasons offer different items. I *think* this gluten free cornbread mix is only available in the fall.

Stuffing and frozen gluten free pie crusts hit the shelves last year mid to late October.

To see the newest product releases, I highly recommend following the Instagram account @traderjoesglutenfree, as well as the official Trader Joe’s account, highlighted below.

Meijer History – A Michigan Company

The first Meijer “Thrifty Acres” grocery store opened in Greenville, Michigan in 1934. The second store opened in Cedar Springs in 1941, just down the street from where my in-laws grew up. This superstore sells not only groceries, but also clothing, games, electronics and more. Learn more about the history of Meijer stores on their website.

Where are Meijer Stores Located?

Since 1934, Meijer stores spread across Michigan and the Midwest. Today stores are also located in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin. You can use the Meijer website to find a local store near you.

Meijer also owns a small collection of “city market” stores in Detroit, Royal Oak, Lansing, and Grand Rapids. These stores are smaller, and tend to offer more “local” products. For example. Rise Authentic Baking and Kind Crumbs products are available at the Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids. However those products are not available at Meijer’s larger locations.

Meijer Digital Coupons – MPerks

Like many grocery store chains, Meijer offers their own digital coupons called MPerks. In addition to coupon savings, you can also accrue MPerks points. You can use these points towards additional savings, such as gas and future purchases. Meijer also accepts manufacturers coupons.

Does Meijer Accept Manufacturers Coupons?

Yes, Meijer accepts manufacturers coupons. However, individual manufacturer coupons over $5 in value must be redeemed at a staffed checkout lane. Anything over $5 cannot be redeemed at self checkout.

How to Search for Gluten Free Items at Meijer

Since not all Meijer stores stock the same products, I like to use the Meijer website or app before heading to the store. You can search for your favorite products by name. In addition, you can use the search term “gluten free” to find “new to you” products. Please be aware that it is not fool proof. Sometimes it lists items that are not gluten free.

Does Meijer Offer a Gluten Free Section?

Meijer no longer offers a gluten free section. They did for many years, but they dismantled it corporate wide in 2022. Now gluten free products are spread throughout the store, in their respective areas.

Does Meijer Have Gluten Free Tags On Shelves?

Yes, there are orange stripes with the words “gluten free” on some shelves. However, this isn’t always posted on all gluten free products. For example, there’s no orange tag under Sweet Loren’s gluten free cookies, but there is under GoGo Squeez applesauce.

Does Meijer Offer Store Brand Gluten Free Items?

Yes! They have gluten free pasta, pizza, cereal and much more. Many of the gluten free products are under the “True Goodness” brand name. HOWEVER, please know that not all True Goodness products are gluten free.

Does Meijer Test for Gluten in Their Own Products?

Below is the email reply I received from Meijer when I asked about their GF products.

Hi Margaret – Thanks for reaching out. Meijer requires the manufacturer of any Own Brand product to confirm the food meets the FDA definition of “gluten free.” This definition mandates the 20ppm threshold. Our vendors coordinate product testing and are contractually responsible to ensure this threshold is not exceeded.

Some items do carry 3^rd party certification for “gluten free” (such as GFCO – Gluten Free Certification Organization), for which testing and records are coordinated by the manufacturer of the foods. These foods would carry the associated logo on the product’s labeling. Meijer works with numerous manufacturing partners to produce Own Brand foods.

How To Locate Products on Shelves

While on the Meijer website or app, each product lists their aisle and section. For instance, fresh produce and bakery aisles are prefaced with A. Shelf stable groceries are usually prefaced with B. Then, each product is given a section.

For example, Celestial Seasonings Teas are in Aisle B 7, section 40 at my local store in Swartz Creek. This means you’ll find the teas in main grocery aisle 7. Each 3 ft section has a number. This will help you narrow down the area where the product is found.

Shop and Scan – Self Checkout

One added benefit of the Meijer app is the “Shop and Scan.” You can scan your purchases in the app, as you shop, and bag them as you go along. Then you will check out at the special Shop and Scan stations.

Staff will double check 4 or 5 products, and then the kiosk loads the rest of your groceries into the system. Pay with credit card and you’re on your way! You can also add a credit card to your Meijer account, and it will automatically pay for your groceries.

My Favorite Gluten Free Products at Meijer

As every person with Celiac Disease knows, it’s near impossible to buy every gluten free product you need at just one store. At Meijer I always snag their thin sliced cheese, certain Schar products, and Lance gluten free crackers, Maine Pie Co. gluten free pie shells, Kinnikinnick products, Aleia’s gluten free stuffing and more.

Items on Sale at Meijer This Week

Meijer sales run from Wednesday to Tuesday. Each week I update my Gluten Free Grocery Sales post with Meijer sales and Kroger sales. While many items I share are specifically gluten free, I also share sales on meat and produce. Shopping gluten free is expensive, and we can use every savings we can get!

I also recommend following my friend Tatanisha’s Saving Money at Meijer Facebook group. Not only does she post sales reminders, but group members also post great deals they found while shopping. (*It is not a celiac focused group, so not all posted sales items will be gluten free.)

I took the time to research and compare each ingredient list. Some are simply brands we know and love, in a new box. Others are products that Aldi likely asked brands to tweak a bit, to get them to a lower price point. Either way, you don’t have to be completely sad that May is over!

Never been to Aldi before? Check out my post about shopping for gluten free items at Aldi.

Identical Replicas

Many of the Aldi gluten free special buy products come from established gluten free companies. Aldi simply repackages them in their own labeling. These products have identical, word for word, ingredients on the label. (Photos in this section courtesy of the brands they represent.)

Live G Free Gluten Free English Muffins

The ingredients for the Live G Free English muffins are IDENTICAL to the Katz Gluten Free English Muffins.  If you sign up for their newsletter, they often highlight sales thru their website. Not a fan of online shopping? Use the Store Locator on their website to find their products near you.

Live G Free Gluten Free Chocolate Frosted and Glazed Donuts

If you thought this Aldi gluten free special buy tasted familiar, you’re right. Katz makes both of these donut flavors. (And many more!) Order from their website, Amazon, or use their store locator to find them in a store near you. (Can’t eat egg? Try my basic gluten free baked donut recipe and dip them in Enjoy Life Chocolate!)

Live G Free Seasonal Donuts (in December)

Miss the Christmas Gingerbread and Cranberry donuts? Katz offers those as well! Order from their website, Amazon, or use their store locator to find them in a store near you. Want to make your own seasonal donuts? I’m a huge fan of my homemade gluten free gingerbread donuts. (They can also be made into cupcakes.)

Breakfast Best Gluten Free Honey and Cinnamon Buns (not a May Item)

These first showed up in Aldi stores in December 2024. Like all of their products, these sweet buns are gluten, dairy, peanut, tree nut and sesame free. Use their store locator to find them in a store near you. You can also order them directly from their website or Amazon. Amazon

Live G Free Gluten Free Texas Toast (not a May item)

Aldi has offered the Katz Texas Toast in the actual Katz packaging before. They’ve also offered it in the Live G Free packaging. It’s fairly safe to assume the Aldi Texas Toast is in fact made by Katz. Use the Katz store locator to find them near you, or order from Amazon.

Live G Free Gluten Free Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins and Blueberry Zucchini Muffins (not a May item)

Noticing a trend here? Earlier this year Aldi offered Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins. While some thought they were made by Veggies Made Great, after looking at the ingredient list, I’m fairly certain they were made by Katz. Order straight from the Katz website or from Amazon. Hate online shopping? Use their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Fresh Pasta (Fettuccine, Tortellini, etc.)

The ingredient label for the Aldi noodles matches exactly with Taste Republic gluten free noodles. Find them at Whole Foods or use their store locator to find them near you. You can now also order Taste Republic products, including their dairy free tortellini, on Amazon.

Live G Free Gluten Free Fresh Lasagna Roll Ups and Stuffed Shells

One of Manini’s Gluten Free Lasagna Roll Ups signature features is the use of ancient grains in their products. This includes sorghum, teff, millet and amaranth. Due to increased cost of shipping, you can no longer order frozen items directly from them. They are, however, available through Amazon Fresh. You can also use their store locator to find their products near you. I know I’ve seen them at Fresh Thyme in East Lansing, Michigan.

LiveGFree Gluten Free Fresh Pizza Dough

This FRESH gluten free pizza dough is made by Manini’s. The use of whole grain millet, sorghum and other ancient grains is what convinces me this is the same manufacturer. This product is vegan and rice free. Just like the fresh ravioli, you need to use Amazon Fresh to find it near you. Or try their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Frozen Cheese Ravioli

I thought Conte’s made the Aldi ravioli. Wrong. A company named Celentano produces them. The “dried whole eggs” as an ingredient in both brands clued me in! Use their “where to buy” feature to find them near you.

Live G Free Gluten Free Egg Rolls

There are very few companies that make gluten free egg rolls. (Feel Good Foods and Lucky Spring Rolls) I’m fairly certain that Feel Good Foods make the Egg Rolls for Aldi. Check out their website for more information.

Earth Grown Vegan Vegetable Potstickers (not a May item)

Much like the Earth Grown Vegan Potstickers at Aldi, Feel Good Foods offers a gluten free vegan potsticker. (They also offer a chicken one, if you eat meat.) Use the Feel Good Foods website store locator to find their products near you.

Fremont Fish Market Gluten Free Boom Boom Shrimp (Not a May item)

While I haven’t compared the ingredients one-to-one, it is highly possible that Aldi sources this product from Northern Chef. Northern Chef makes many gluten free frozen seafood products. In the past I’ve seen them at Meijer, but not sure if they’re still available there. (Royal Asia also sells a gluten free Boom Boom Shrimp. Royal Asia and Northern Chef are owned by the same parent company.)

Live G Free Gluten Free PB + J Bites (and other flavors) (not a May item)

Without a doubt, I knew Michigan’s own The GFB made the  Aldi gluten free special buy “bites.” Order from their website, Amazon, or use their store locator to find them near you!

Live G Free Gluten Free Cheesecake Sampler

The biggest showstopper in the Aldi gluten free special buy lineup is the gluten free cheesecake sampler. Based on ingredients, these are made by Atlanta Cheesecake Company. Stores that seem to have these on a continual basis include Food Lion, Weis Markets, and Acme Markets. Daiya Foods makes dairy free cheesecake that is also gluten free. It can be found at many grocery store chains.

Incredibly Similar Ingredients for Past Items

These Aldi gluten free special buy products contain ingredients VERY close to certain brands. Sometimes, Aldi will ask them to reformulate a product to make it slightly cheaper. I share why I believe these are the brands you’re looking for.

Live G Free Gluten Free Stuffing

You don’t need to hoard all the stuffing every Fall. Aleia’s makes gluten free stuffing year round. Meijer sells it, as well as Fresh Thyme and other stores. While they don’t have separate “turkey and chicken” flavors like Aldi, this stuff is just as good.

Live G Free Gluten Free Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns

When I searched Google for the ingredients in these buns, Little Northern Bakehouse showed to be the closest. The ingredients listed are almost identical to the Aldi buns, minus the millet and chia. Bonus, these contain no eggs! They are often available at Fresh Thyme Markets. Use their store locator to find them near you.

Live G Free Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Is the Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin bread your favorite May Aldi gluten free special buy? Little Nothern Bakehouse makes an almost identical product as well! You can order a case of them on Amazon.

No Comparison – Unique Items

I performed my best sleuthing. However, I failed to find exact or even incredibly close replicas of these May Aldi gluten free special buy products. Therefore, I mention brands that offer great alternatives.

Live G Free Gluten Free Boxed Skillet Dinners

I can’t find a name brand company that sells meals like this. Walmart sells a similar product, so hopefully you can find it in your local Walmart. You can also try Iowa Girl Eats’ recipe for Homemade Cheeseburger Helper.

Live G Free Gluten Free Frozen Skillet Meals

I almost bet that Conte’s produced the Aldi gluten free special buy skillet meals. However, the ingredients didn’t match at all. However, I imagine they taste similar. Order directly from Conte’s website, or from Gluten Free Mall. (P.S. They make gluten free stuffed shells, too!)

Live G Free Gluten Free Croutons

These croutons list rice milk as the first ingredient. Despite my searching, I found no identical gluten free crouton counterpart. However, I highly recommend Aleia’s gluten free croutons! Order from their website or use their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Angel Food Cake Mix

The only commercially made gluten free angel food cake mix I know of is produced by Kinnikinnick in Canada. While the Aldi LiveGFree mix is not identical, the Kinnikinnick may be a good alternative. Order it through their website or Amazon. Also, Meaningful Eats created a perfect gluten free Angel Food Cake recipe!

Live G Free Gluten Free Lemon Cake Mix

Love that lemon cake mix? (It pairs so nicely with my mother-in-law’s lemon curd filing!) Authentic Foods makes the closest replica I could find. Order it online through the Gluten Free Supermarket site or use their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Key Lime Cake Mix

Friends, I’m at a loss. I found no gluten free cake mixes with key lime flavor. If you crave key lime flavor, you might want to try this new Gluten Free Banana Lime Bread from GF Jules. Someone mentioned that they used King Arthur Measure for Measure in Trisha Yearwood’s Key Lime Cake and it tasted fabulous.

Never Any Chicken with Orange Sauce or Sweet and Sour Chicken

I got nothing. I searched the internet for over an hour, and I couldn’t find a similar product. Every frozen orange chicken meal I found contained wheat. I recommend this Crispy Gluten Free Orange Chicken recipe from Mama Gourmand, instead.

Well friends, there you have it. Hopefully this list helps fulfill your Aldi gluten free special buy longings, all throughout the year. In addition, I hope I introduced you to some new brands to support. Feel free to check out my list of Aldi gluten free products available year round.

Are there any Special Buy products I missed? Tell me in the comments below.

Did You Grab the Gluten Free Package?

We’ve all done it. We’re in a rush at the store, see our favorite product, and grab it without a second glance. If that product is from a company that also makes wheat based items, sometimes the packaging is too similar, and we grab the wrong one. Today I’m sharing some products that cut it too close, as well as praise those who have tried to do good job with different packaging.

With each photo, the wheat based product is on the left, and the gluten free product is on the right. I will provide a link to each brand’s website page, as well. Also, in the description of each photo, I offer a recommendation for an alternate, dedicated gluten free brand. Amazon affiliate links are included for some of those alternatives. At the end I link to other grocery shopping tips.

The Most Similar Packaging

Lucky Spring Rolls

When a Facebook follower alerted me to this in 2020, my jaw dropped to the floor. The only major differentiation between Lucky’s wheat based and gluten free packaging is the yellow strip in the left hand corner. All the remaining elements are completely identical. If you can find them, I recommend buying Feel Good Foods egg rolls, which are completely gluten free.

Van’s Waffles

Far too many people with Celiac Disease have been tripped up by Van’s Waffles. As you can see, the packaging is JUST too similar. Their gluten free waffles have actually been recalled in the past, because they accidentally used the gluten free packaging for their regular waffles. Yikes. I actually make my own gluten free waffles from scratch, using this Dash waffle maker.

Carbonaut

This low carb bread is all the rage right now. However, please be advised that not all Carbonaut Bread is gluten free. While there is a differentiation between the two bags, they’re still similar enough to cause confusion.

Perdue Simply Smart Chicken Strips

Recently, Perdue updating the packaging on their Perdue Simply Smart Organics Gluten Free Chicken Breast Tenders. They packages look very different now. However, their non-organic chicken breast tenders are pretty similar. It makes me want to stick to making my own, with Aleia’s Gluten Free Coat and Crunch, or their bread crumbs.

Applegate Chicken Nuggets

Aside from the words “gluten free” at the top of the box, Applegate does use a different colored stripe at the bottom of their gluten free packaging. The organic gluten free version of their nuggets, which come in a white box, also has a yellow stripe at the bottom. I tend to stick to Golden Platter gluten free nuggets, as all of their products are gluten free.

Barilla Pasta

The most noticeable difference between Barilla wheat based and gluten free pasta is the light blue stripe under the word “Gluten Free.” As well as the certified gluten free logo on the packaging. In all honesty, this is my “go to” pasta. If you’d like to support a brand that ONLY makes gluten free pasta, I would recommend Tinkyada.

Amy’s Products

I don’t know what Amy’s is doing here. The picture on the left is their gluten free pizza. However, this is NEWER packaging with even less of a call-out that it’s gluten free. There used to be a whole banner at the top that said gluten free. Now it’s gone, and there’s just a small logo in the bottom left hand corner.

The biggest issue is too many people mistakenly believe that all Amy’s Kitchen products are gluten free. Sadly, they are NOT. One woman even commented, “I fed my 8 year old (gluten free) granddaughter Amy’s (wheat) pizza (on accident). She vomited all night. I cried for days. Still upsets me.” PLEASE read the packaging of Amy’s Kitchen products carefully for the presence of wheat.

Tyson Nuggets

I don’t know what Tyson is doing with their gluten free line. For one, they discontinued most of it. While Tyson non gluten free nuggets are in a red bag, the boneless chicken bites on the right are NOT gluten free. Watch out, friends.

Similar Packaging, Different Colors

Rudi’s Bakery

First, many people don’t realize that Rudi’s Bakery makes non-gluten free bread. In my opinion, I think that’s one of the biggest stumbling blocks. People falsely assume that when they find a gluten free product, everything that brand makes is gluten free.

In 2025, Rudi’s updated the packaging on their gluten free breads, so now they’re not as identical as they used to be. Personally, I stick with Canyon Bakehouse bread. Because they ONLY make gluten free bread. Nothing else.

Bob’s Red Mill Polenta / Corn Grits

In theory, any corn polenta / corn grits should be gluten free, because it’s made from corn. However, Bob’s Red Mill has two different milling facilities. One handles wheat, barley and rye. The other only mills gluten free produts, which are also tested in-house to make sure they test under 20 ppm.  (Bob’s Red Mill products are not third-party certified by an outside organization.)

The last time I was at the store, the polenta milled in the non-gf facility also had red lettering, and not blue. (The images above are from the Bob’s Red Mill website.) So maybe they’ve understood the need to make the non gluten free packaging more noticeable. Which is much appreciated.

Simple Truth Products (Kroger)

I personally have grabbed the wrong back of Simple Truth animal crackers and have eaten them. Others have mentioned the similar packaging for their sandwich cookies is also an issue. For animal crackers, I buy either Glutino or Kinnikinnick.

Blake’s Pot Pies

Again, similar, but the color behind the text on the Blake’s gluten free packaging is very different. There is a “gluten free” in a circle, and the picture is slightly different. I recently tried Raised Gluten Free vegan pot pies. All of their products are gluten free and vegan. Good enough that I’d definitely buy it again! (Available at Kroger.)

 Freschetta Pizza

Another Facebook follower also brought up this product. I have difficulty finding the Freschetta gluten free pizza in my area, and my husband can’t eat pork. So I have only bought it once. I intentionally search for the big yellow gluten free circle. I recently bought the Banza cheese pizza, which my (non-gluten-free) husband really enjoyed. All Banza products are gluten free.

Birch Benders

I will say that Birch Benders gluten free packaging looks pretty different from their Classic recipe. They also have many other certified gluten free pancake mixes, including Keto and Paleo mixes. I think because they have so many gluten free products, people mistakenly believe that all of their products are gluten free. Josie’s Best Gluten Free is a 100% gluten free mix company.

Brands with Good Gluten Free Packaging

Tate’s Bake Shop

While some people have complained that the packaging is similar, I think Tate’s is a brand that gets gluten free packaging right. The bags are a completely different color. While there are dedicated gluten free cookie brands available, Tate’s might be more readily available in grocery stores. Enjoy Life Foods Crunchy Cookies are completly gluten free, and free from the top 9 allergens.

MI-Del

If you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac Disease for more than a decade, MI Del is likely a familiar name. When I was diagnosed 20 years ago, they were the “go to” gluten free cookie. Their packaging is very similar. However, it appearts that MI Del recently made a change to make all their gluten free packaging blue. Which is very helpful. I still prefer Kinnickinnick Cookies, which are made in a dedicated gluten free facility in Canada.

Oreo

Whether you love or dislike the new Nabisco gluten free Oreos, I have to give them kuddos for their white gluten free packaging. While other Oreo cookies may have non-blue packaging, only white packaging (so far) is used for gluten free cookies. I’m one of those people who can’t tolerate oats, so I stick with Glutino Super Stuffed Sandwich cookies.

A Word About Allergens and Packaging

So Delicious – Nut Based vs Nut Free

While both of these ice creams contain no gluten, there is a big ingredient difference between the two. With just a quick glance, can you tell which So Delicious vanilla ice cream contains nuts? This issue was recently brought to light on Twitter. A father, whose child is allergic to dairy and nuts, accidentally bought and fed the one with nuts to his daughter. Luckily, they had an epipen and she survived. (I personally prefer Coconut Bliss dairy free ice cream, or Nada Moo.)

But this brings to light why distinct allergen and gluten free packaging is so important. It can literally be a matter of life and death.

Kroger History & Sister Stores

Per the history section of the their website, Kroger “began in 1883 when Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to open a single grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati.” Since then Kroger has expanded across the United States.

As the nation’s largest grocer, Kroger owns “nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states operating under 28 different names.” Those names include Fred Meyer, King Soopers, QFC, Dillons, Mariano’s, Fry’s, Harris Teeter, Food4Less, Ralph’s, Smith’s, and more. They also own Vitacost.

Where are Kroger Stores Located?

Operating in 35 states, I almost feel it’s easier to ask where they’re NOT located. Ironically, there are no Kroger stores on the west side of Michigan. (I believe this is due to the presence of 80+ SpartanNash stores.) To find a Kroger store near you, use their Store Locator.

Kroger Digital Coupons & Manufacturer Coupons

Like Meijer, Kroger supports their own digital coupons. Once you create a digital account, you can clip them through the app or their website. I often get “Just for You” digital coupons for products I often buy. Kroger also accepts manufacturers coupons.

One of my favorite deal options on the Kroger website is their “Use 5 x” digital coupons. They often include deals on ground beef, chicken, cheese and many other products. I make sure to stock up on those items. Each Friday they offer a 4x Fuel Points digital coupon.

How to Search the Kroger Website for GF Items

I LOVE the Kroger app. In my opinion, it’s so much more helpful than the Meijer app. In my experience, the Kroger app senses which store I’m in, and updates the app automatically.

Kroger offers a unique search portal to help customers look for gluten free groceries. Use their portal to find gluten free essentials like bread, pasta, and more.

Does Kroger Offer a Gluten Free Section?

It depends on what store you are in. Recently, Kroger has moved away from its Nature’s Market section, which stocked gluten free and organic products. In turn, they’ve spread gluten free items out through out the store. Now, most sections have a “healthy” sub-section, which is where you’ll often find gluten free products.

Does Kroger Have Gluten Free Tags On Shelves?

Yes. Store shelves feature purple GF tags for gluten free products. However, it may not always be consistent. Certified gluten free products may have no GF tag, while store brands may have a GF tag.

Does Kroger Offer Store Brand Gluten Free Items?

Yes. Many store brand items are under the Simple Truth product line. This includes gluten free cookies, crackers, pizza, waffles, bread, pasta, baking mixes and more. HOWEVER, please know that NOT all Simple Truth products are gluten free.

Does Kroger Test for Gluten in Their Own Products?

I asked Kroger staff the following two questions, and below is their response.

• Does Kroger test for the presence of gluten in their store brand/ private label items that are labeled gluten free?
  • Kroger does have a Gluten Free Claim policy in place for products that carry this claim. This policy requires the supplier/ vendor test for the presence of gluten and the required target is less than 20 ppm in the finished product.
  • Our production facilities and suppliers are obligated to follow appropriate protocols such as Good Manufacturing Practices and manage a comprehensive allergen and segregation policy to evaluate products and maintain segregation to prevent cross contact.

• Are any Kroger/ Simple Truth gluten free products certified gluten free, and if so, what certifying organization does Kroger use?
  • Yes. Any product with a Certified Gluten Free claim is managed by the manufacture/supplier and certifying organization may vary by supplier.

Other Ways Kroger Accommodates Those Who Eat Gluten Free

Laura Brown, Kroger’s Health Director of Nutrition, also mentioned other ways that Kroger works to meet the needs of those who eat gluten free.

“I should mention that Kroger Health has a team of registered dietitians that provide virtual nutrition care across 44 states (for a fee). Our dietitians are not just nutrition professionals, but also product experts, and are well versed in the gluten-free products available in our Kroger stores.

They can assist gluten-free shoppers both online and in-store, helping them find products that meet their specific dietary and personal needs. Additionally, we provide a dedicated gluten-free shopping experience on Kroger.com: https://www.kroger.com/f/gluten-free-groceries.”

In addition, Kroger offers a large collection of gluten free recipes on their website. Click the “Diet and Health” filter section on the left, and click on gluten free. You can also filter out other allergens, such as dairy, egg, soy and nuts.

How To Locate Products on Shelves

When searching for gluten free items on the Kroger website, it lists the aisle where the product is located. Unfortunately, it does not have a section number like the Meijer app does. However, the Kroger app does include a map function. This shows where a product is located.

Does Kroger Offer Scanning While You Shop?

Previously Kroger offered “Scan, Bag and Go” at their stores. However, this service is no longer available. The “Kroger Pay” on their app simply allows you to store a credit card. It does NOT allow you to scan all your groceries in store and automatically pay for them.

My Favorite Gluten Free Products at Kroger

Like most people, I must travel to a variety of stores to buy all the groceries I need. Some of my favorite gluten free Kroger finds include Kroger natural peanut butter, Barilla gluten free pasta, Milton’s gluten free pizza, Gilbert’s Chicken Sausages, Canyon Bakehouse bread, Antonina’s Gluten Free Cupcakes and much more.

Sales run from Wednesday to Tuesday. Each week I update my Gluten Free Grocery Sales post with Kroger sales and Meijer sales. While many items I share are specifically gluten free, I also share sales on meat and produce. Shopping gluten free is expensive, and we can use every savings we can get!

Where in the World is Horrocks Farm Market?

Technically, there is more than one answer. If you ask me, I say that Horrocks Farm Market sits just off 1-96 in Lansing. (Exit 93B, to be exact.) However, multiple Horrocks locations exist around the state. There’s one in Battle Creek, and one in Kentwood. (Although the Horrocks in Kentwood drops the word “Farm” from its title.)

What Makes This Store Special?

It’s hard to say. It just IS. When owner Jerald Horrocks started his business in 1959, I wonder if he knew just how many people he would impact. I remember as a child, seeing him in the store. He’d pass out free fruit and flowers to customers. Today, even 50 years later, his family continues to honor Jerald Horrocks’ legacy and dream.

Maybe It’s the Free Coffee?

Not gonna lie, every time my husband and I visit Horrocks Farm Market, we make a beeline to the coffee section. Customers enjoy free cups of in-house roasted coffee or tea (hot or cold) while they shop. A table of extras including cream, honey, flavored syrups and more await you to create your own cup of joy.

*** Ever since COVID, free coffee is no longer available. ***

Or is the Fresh Popped Popcorn?

Creative and delicious flavors of popcorn await you at Horrocks Farm Market. Of course, you can sample every flavor. You’ll find it next to the coffee, and across from the store made fudge. Just down the aisle from Iorio’s gelato. Sweet or savory, this store has it all. Even infused oils and vinegars!

Could it be the Wine and Beer?

Horrocks Farm Market is much bigger than it was when I was a child. I swear it’s doubled in size. Partially to accommodate the new wine bar. And yes, you can drink and shop here. Not into wine? They have a beer bar as well. (Although no gluten free beers on tap, that I know.)

This store boasts the largest wine and beer selection I’ve ever seen. You will find gluten free Glutenberg and Brewery Nyx in stock here, as well as Ground Breaker Brewing. Not into beer? They have three large racks completely filled with various hard ciders, mostly from Michigan. Including my favorite, JK’s Farmhouse Ciders.

Don’t Forget the Cheese!

Horrocks Farm Market doesn’t just have a cheese counter. It has a cheese AISLE. Located at the rear of the store, you can find just about any cheese you want. Even dairy free Daiya. Not finding enough among their 4 or 5 refrigerated open cases? Check out the refrigerated dairy room. You’ll find even more there!

Mountains of Fruits and Vegetables

On a recent trip, a friend’s daughter spotted the sweet potatoes. Her comment  -” It’s a mountain of potatoes, and I want to climb it!” You’ll find more than your standard vegetables here though. Here you find purple potatoes and exotic chiles and fruits you won’t ever see at Walmart. You can taste the world here, and at incredibly cheap prices!

Sushi, Mochi, Antipasto and More

Forget going to the mall to get lunch. Horrocks Farm Market offers a soup and salad bar, an olive bar, hot pizza (NOT gluten free) and even mochi for dessert. (Pictured above is gluten free cookies and cream mochi.) At Horrocks, it’s like going to Epcot and tasting the whole theme park under one building!

Pianos and Perennials

Since my childhood, someone randomly plays the piano throughout the day. Nestled among the flour bouquets (which you can also have made to order), sits a black piano. Hidden so well in fact, you have to follow the melodious sound to figure out where it’s coming from. One day it’s Bach, another it’s Bachman Turner Overdrive. Either way, it’s enjoyable.

Speaking of perennials, Horrocks Farm Market displays the largest greenhouses in the greater Lansing area. Each spring, the outdoor stalls burst with colors of orange marigolds and purple hyacinths and red tomato plants. If your green thumb is itching for spring, this is the place for you!

Gluten Free Options Galore

While I go for the produce prices and selection, it’s the amazing selection of gluten free options that keeps me coming back. Here I buy my HerbOx Bouillon, my favorite Schar Artisan Bread, Chebe Bread Cinnamon Roll mixs and Enjoy Life items. However, I find here unique items like 100% gluten free soba noodles or Michigan Made Al Dente Gluten Free Pasta.

All About Community

Know what I really love? Bumping into friends whenever I go. Whether it’s the parent of a gluten free camper, or fellow blogger Tatanisha and her husband (and he’ll gladly give you cooking tips), this place feels like home no matter how far I wander. Hopefully, we’ll bump into each other someday there, too. Or any of these 20+ other Facebook friends who also shared why they love Horrocks Farm Market so much!

Why Plum Market Rocks

I first visited (and wrote about) Plum Market in 2013. My husband and I traveled to the Ann Arbor location, situated near Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Plum Market, based in greater Detroit, is “committed to offering the very best selections of All Natural, Organic, Local, and Specialty items in a full-service shopping experience.” They promote local (within a 350 mile radius) whenever possible. They also partner with specific brands, such as Bell and Evans. Why? Because they treat their chickens humanely and focus on quality over quantity. Now that’s something I can get behind. Look for Bell and Evans products in the freezer section. However, please note that Bell and Evans makes regular and gluten free products, so grab the right box!

Check out this Plum Market gluten free discovery! Pacific Seafood gluten free crispy battered haddock? You will find these, and the above Bell and Evans gluten free chicken patties in the frozen section of the meat department.

Not a meat eater? This shelf stable jackfruit was a surprise Plum Market gluten free discovery. Previously, I’ve found it refrigerated, but never in a box. Have you tried it? Also, note the Aleia’s Coat and Crunch in the background. I use that to prepare my gluten free baked mozzarella cheese sticks!

Looking for carbs? In the pasta aisle, Plum market gluten free pasta options are plentiful! While I enjoy Banza pasta and other brands, I’ve recently been turned on to Jovial pasta. Their tagliatelle taste great, so I’m eager to try their lasagna noodles. Similar to Bell and Evans, make sure to check packaging, as Jovial makes gluten based pastas as well. You can also buy Taste Republic fresh gluten free pastas at Plum Market. (Taste Republic is the new name for the RP’s Pasta gluten free line.)

Plum Market Gluten Free Snacks

I LOVE roasted chickpeas. Have you tried them? While I practiced restraint, I really wanted to buy this bag of Saffron Roads Salted Caramel crunchy chickpeas. Unfortunately, they no longer make these, but do have other savory crunchy chickpea flavors.

I felt so excited to finally see Plum Market gluten free product. I first learned about these after other bloggers shared about them after finding them at the Natural Products Expo. Bear Nibbles YoYo’s ingredients include fruit and vegetables. No added sugars or artificial colors.

Plum Market Gluten Free Sweet Treats

After trying JJ’s Sweets dairy free caramels in my American Gluten Free box, I love finding these gluten free, dairy free sweet treats at the store. They recently launched these chocolate covered caramel bites. Grab them if you can find them. They disappear quick!

Not all Plum Market gluten free products reside in dedicated gluten free area. However, you will find these My Dad’s Cookies on a gluten free rack in the bakery section. Right next to the Ethel’s Baking Company goodies! If you miss Milano cookies, you need to get your hands on these!

Plum Market Gluten Free Finds in the Freezer Section

These Maine Pie Co. gluten free pies were FOR SURE my favorite Plum Market gluten free find. Unfortunately, I did not bring a cooler with me, and these would have totally thawed on the hour drive back home.

The selection of Plum Market gluten free items is so huge, I can’t possibly share them all here. Guess this means you’ll have to take a trip and explore it for yourself. If you do, let me know your favorite find!
