Union Assembly is located in downtown Detroit on historic Woodward Avenue. The restaurant resides on the lower level of the Little Caesars World Headquarters. We’re across the street from Comerica Park, and close to Fox Theater.

Why Does Union Assembly Offer Gluten Free Options?

Union Assembly, like all of the Union Joints, is dedicated to welcoming guests with various dietary needs. Recognizing the increasing demand for gluten-free options, we aim to provide delicious choices that allow everyone to enjoy our food and keep them coming back for more!

How About Other Food Allergens? Are there plant based options?

Our kitchen ingredients include foods from the other top allergens. We do offer gluten free vegetarian and vegan options, including a vegan cauliflower soup.

What Kind of Oil Do You Use for Cooking/ Frying?

For frying, we use canola oil. For general cooking and our dressings, we utilize a blend of olive and canola oil. Please note that we do not have a dedicated fryer for gluten free items.

Do you Have a Separate Gluten Free Menu?

Union Assembly does not have a separate gluten free menu. All gluten free options are marked on the main menu.

Gluten free options include handheld sandwiches, including our Paul’s Reuben sandwich, made with Detroit’s own Sy Ginsburg corned beef. We also offer salads.

What steps do you take to prevent cross contact in the kitchen?

We keep a dedicated prep area for gluten free meals. Staff know to change gloves, and use separate cutting boards and utensils when preparing gluten free orders. Gluten free orders are cooked in a separate pan instead of a shared griddle.

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a Gluten Free meal?

At this time, we do not have special plates or picks that denote a gluten free meal.

Do You Offer Gluten Free Desserts?

Yes! Our delightful cheesecake features a delicious gluten-free graham cracker crust.

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item?

 Our creamy and satisfying Gluten-Free Mac & Cheese is a definite crowd favorite!

Do you offer gluten free beer or hard cider?

While we don’t have gluten free beer at this time, we do offer gluten free hard cider. Join us Monday through Friday from 2pm-6pm during Happy Hour for $5 bites and drinks.

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside? 

Absolutely! We have a lovely patio area, and yes, pups are welcome to join you there when the patio is open.

Who Plays at Comerica Park?

Comerica Park is home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team. Previously they played at Tigers Stadium, located at the corner of Trumbull and Michigan. However, the Detroit Tigers moved to Comerica Park in April of 2000.

Comerica Park is one of three major sporting arenas located in downtown Detroit. Little Caesars Arena houses the Detroit Pistons basketball team and the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, which opened in 2017. The Detroit Lions football team plays at Ford Field, which opened in 2002.

Since 2017, Detroit is the only U.S. city to have its MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL teams play within its downtown district. ~Wikipedia

Where is Comerica Park?

Comerica Park is located at 2100 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201. Woodward Avenue, also known as M-1, runs thru the heart of Detroit, and thru most of Metro Detroit. It’s famous for the Woodward Dream (Car) Cruise, which takes place every August.

How Much are Tickets?

Single game ticket prices start around $30, and cost as much as $200+. Tickets prices vary due to seating location. Bleacher seats cost less than box seats. Visit the Detroit Tigers website to buy tickets.

What Steps Does Comerica Park Take to Prevent Cross Contact?

I asked David Comiska about cross contact in regards to hot dogs and sausages. In addition, I asked if staff change gloves when handling a gluten free order. Here is his reply.

All hot dogs and sausages are gluten free, until placed into a hot dog bun. The only thing cooked on those grills are diced onions, pepper onion blend, and sauerkraut. 

Our gluten free buns are not warmed at all or heated in any capacity, same as our regular hot dog buns. 

The gluten free hot dog buns come in a 4 pack. Generally, staff knows to change gloves. However, it never hurts for the guest to ask the person to change their gloves when dealing with gluten free buns, knowing that it is a special dietary need of said guest. 

Does Comerica Park Have Gluten Free Beer?

While I do not see any gluten free beers on their menu, they do serve hard cider and seltzers. Most notable, Blake’s Triple Jam Hard Cider is available at most bars.

The Meijer Market (Section 143) and the Miller Lite Market (Section 149) both have seltzers and canned cocktails. The Miller Lite Pitcher’s Pub (near Gate B) has a full bar.

Can I Bring my Own Gluten Free Food To Comerica Park?

I asked David Comiska this question, and this was his reply. “If after they see the allergy guide that is attached, and still cannot find something, I then coordinate with security. I allow them to bring snacks in that don’t take up much space. Any bags with gluten free snacks must follow our security team’s policy regarding bags.”

The bag policy states that “Single compartment bags, wallets and clutches smaller than 4″ x 6″ x 1.5” with or without a handle or strap are permitted. Bags, purses, clutches larger than 4” x 6” x 1.5” are prohibited.

Exceptions to this policy include bags, wallets and clutches needed due to medical necessity. Medical necessity includes diaper bags, breast pumps, oxygen, insulin, epi-pens and other medical devices. Authorized Diaper and Medical bags are required to be smaller than 16″ x 16″ x 8″.

Where Should I Park if Going to Comerica Park?

Parking in Detroit is crazy, even on a non game day. You can reserve parking spots through the Park Whiz on the Detroit Tigers website. There are 2 parking structures near Comerica Park, which are Tigers Parking Garage and the McLaren Garage. They are at the north end of the ball park.

You can park farther away from the ballpark, which is usually cheaper. Public transportation that runs near Comerica Park include The Q-Line station at Montcalm Street is near the stadium. You can also use the People Mover, and exit at the Grand Circus Station.

What Other Gluten Free Dining Options are Near Comerica Park?

Across Woodward, you can easily walk to Frita Batidos or Union Assembly. Buddy’s Pizza on Broadway, home of the original Detroit Style Pizza, offers gluten free pizza options. It’s about a 5 minute walk from the front of the stadium. You’ll find Detroit Water Ice Company, which has amazing Italian Ice, about a 10 min walk away, on Woodward. Most flavors are gluten free.

If you’re willing to travel a bit, you can go to Breadless on Larned, where EVERYTHING is gluten free. Everything at the Sushi Lounge inside Detroit Shipping Company is also gluten free. Baobab Fare, which is about 3.5 miles northwest of the ballpark, has a menu where everything is gluten free except for the bread. They have amazing African food.

Or, go to the old Corktown area and eat at Slows BBQ. Or Condado Tacos, located about a mile away on Selden St, has many gluten free options. I also like Folk Detroit for their gluten free waffles, which is on my Detroit Gluten Free Dining Guide. Make sure to scroll to the bottom for Metro Detroit gluten free dining suggestions.

Gluten Free Options at Other Michigan Sport Venues

Curious about other sports teams? I’m working on articles about Little Caesars Area and Ford Field. Interested in Minor League Baseball? Where is Condado Tacos?

Condado Tacos started in Ohio in 2014, and has expanded to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Michigan alone offers 7 locations, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Troy, Royal Oak, Detroit and Ann Arbor.

I’ve visited the Polaris location in Columbus, as well as the Royal Oak location. Recently, I was invited to the grand opening of the Breton Village restaurant in Grand Rapids, which is their 40th location. 

What Gluten Free Options does Condado Tacos Offer?

Prior to attending the event, I reached out to Condado Tacos staff with a few questions. They were great at answering all of my questions in advance. In addition, they were generous with their time in answering additional questions while at the restaurant. Here at the answers to my most pressing questions. 

• What gluten free options does Condado Tacos offer?

Everything on the menu is gluten free except for the following items;  Flour tortilla shells, Gochujang BBQ Sauce, and Korean BBQ Jackfruit. These items are never cooked in our fryers. 

How Does Condado Tacos Prepare Gluten Free Orders? 

• What steps does Condado Tacos take to prevent wheat cross contact with gluten free orders? 

We do not have a separate dedicated gluten free prep space. However, if an item is marked specifically as “gluten free,” our team considers it an “allergy” and uses a set of protocols to keep our guests safe.

This includes washing hands and putting on fresh gloves. In addition, staff use an entirely separate cutting board and only pulls fresh product to avoid any cross contact. We also package those items separately into their own basket/tray or To Go bag.

• Does Condado Tacos have a Dedicated Gluten Free Fryer? What Oil Do You Use?

We only fry the following items : Tofu (crusted with gf cornmeal), corn taco shells, corn tortilla chips, brussels sprouts (gf) and tater tots (gf). We use a highly refined soybean oil for our fryer. However, we also fry tofu in our fryer.  

(From FARE-“Highly refined soy oil is not required to be labeled as an allergen. Studies show that most people with soy allergy can safely eat highly refined soy oil as well as soy lecithin. If you are allergic to soy, ask your doctor whether you need to avoid soy oil or soy lecithin.”) 

What Food Allergen Training Does Your Staff Receive?

• What Training does Condado Staff Receive about Preparing Gluten Free Orders?

All staff goes through allergen training during the initial onboarding process. We consider a gluten allergy as serious as any of the other main allergies like tree nuts, shellfish, and other commonplace allergies. Every Condado Tacos location has a common allergen guide guests can reference, and it is updated with any menu change we undergo.

• What Other Dietary Restrictions Do You Accommodate? 

We use no peanuts or tree nuts on our menu. (We do use pumpkin seeds, which may have cross contact issues with nuts, in processing.) In addition, we currently have no shellfish on our menu. (Our chipotle honey contains fish ingredients.)

Our menu can easily be modified for dairy free, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free eaters. Our menu has a key that denotes these options. We do not have dairy free cheese options, at this time.  

What Did You Order?

I was invited to a private event for the new Breton Village location. (In full disclosure, I was not charged for any of my beverages or my meal.) Condado Tacos is widely known for their margaritas, which they had available.

However, I rarely drink alcohol, and appreciated they they had mocktails available. (Stay tuned for Condado’s new mocktails menu that will be released in April.) I thoroughly enjoyed their Cactus Juice, which is made from prickly pear juice, pineapple, lemon and ginger beer. 

This is my third time dining gluten free at Condado Tacos, and I love their queso. On this occasion, all guests were given an order of chips, queso and guacamole. This is their Three Buds menu option, which allows you to pick any three dips, and is served with chips.

One of the new items on their menu is their Brussel Simmons queso, which may be the best queso I’ve ever eaten in my life. It’s topped with crispy shaved Brussel sprouts, bacon, and a balsalmic glaze. 

What Tacos are Gluten Free? What Proteins Are Offered?

Condado Tacos offers lots of gluten free options. You can order some of their Suggested Tacos, or build your own. I appreciate that their menu denotes which items are spicy, as my stomach doesn’t handle spice so well.

When it comes to ordering, my server stated that one taco is a snack, two to three tacos are a meal. Since I wanted to try other items, I only ordered one taco.  

Their “Suggested Tacos” menu offers any protein choices, as well as vegetarian options. Choose from chicken, ground beef, brisket, pork, steak, or plant based tacos. They even offer veggie chorizo!

I ordered their Plane Jane Taco, as I wanted to try their Kewl Ranch shell. If a taco you want is listed as being made with a flour tortilla, you can ask to sub a corn tortilla instead. 

What About Vegetarian Options? 

With the option to build your own tacos, nachos and bowls, there are many vegetarian options. I chose to order a Rice and Black Beans bowl. I chose their Roasted Portabellas as my protein, which were AMAZING.

My waitress was great in walking me thru how to add to my bowl, and was great with suggestions. Their creamy Avocado Ranch was the perfect topping for my bowl. 

Truth be told, I was so full from the Three Buds dip sampler, I took the bowl home and ate it for lunch the next day. It still tasted amazing, rewarmed the next day. I dare say this is better than any bowl I’ve ever ordered from Chipotle.

Condado Tacos also offers Thai Chili Tofu as a protein, as well as Veggie Chorizo. Unfortunately, their Korean BBQ Jackfruit is NOT gluten free. 

Let’s Talk About This Art Work! 

Each Condado Tacos location features hand painted art work by local artists. As you can see in the top right hand corner of the first photo, it says “Feb NO 40.” This marks the month this restaurant opened, and that it is the 40th Condado Tacos location. Sometimes artists include their instagram handle so you can follow them on social media. I didn’t get a chance to look for it, but I’ll defintely try the next time I go! 

“Condado Tacos celebrates the communities they join by hiring local artists to paint the walls and ceilings of each restaurant with unique, street-art inspired hand painted murals. For the Breton Village location, Condado Tacos is serving up scenes featuring “The Startling Tales of Condado #40,” where pages from our very own Grand Rapids Condado comic book series are strewn about the room.

In each artist’s mural, you’ll find pages from each of the artists’ different stories. Grand Rapids area references include Punk Island, the Griffins hockey team, the Grand Rapids cityscape, the geology of the Great Lakes, the Fishladder, Grab Corners (now Campau Square), Finny – a fin whale skeleton from the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and other hidden images local Michaganders will recognize and enjoy.”

Excellent Customer Service

While the food was amazing, the customer service was just as wonderful. Staff were great at answering questions. I even told a server how impressed I was that I overheard him asking his guests if they had any allergies, prior to serving them.

My server has been with Condado Tacos for 2 1/2 years. She said she personally appreciates Condado’s attention to allergens, as she and her friend both have dietary restriction. 

I was able to chat at length with Tina, one of the managers, and she was great at answering any additional questions I asked. She was very friendly, and easily approachable, as were all the other management staff.

The CEO of Condado Tacos stated the goal of their restaurant is to encourage guests to “come as you are.” I left that evening feeling welcomed, and encouraged that this is the kind of place that will take my gluten free dining needs seriously. 

After eating here, I’ll be adding Condado Tacos to my Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Detroit restaurant dining guides. And don’t forget Columbus!

Where is Frita Batidos?

Ann Arbor is home to many amazing restaurants, and Frita Batidos rates high on that list. While it may appear similar to a burger and fry joint, Frita Batidos is a marriage of Cuban flavors that transport you to the tropics. I don’t know that I’ve ever eaten a better burger. And that coconut batido milkshake? Sweet and delectable. All this and they’re totally hip on safely preparing foods for those with food sensitivities.

I contacted Paterno Johnson, the general manager at Frita Batidos, prior to our midweek lunchtime visit. They’ve received great reviews on the Find Me Gluten Free app, but I wanted to inquire further. Reviewers piqued my interest, stating that Frita Batidos has a dedicated fryer. (Gluten-free French Fries are the way to this gal’s heart!) They have a guide that lays out their menu by special requirements, be it gluten-free, vegetarian, lighter side, and more. Paterno explained, via email, their step-by-step process for handling an order for a customer with food allergies.

How Does Frita Batidos Handle Gluten Free Orders? 

When you place your order at the counter, the front-of-house staff comes in the kitchen to talk to the expediter. The “expo” circles the allergy item in red sharpie on both the yellow and white tickets so the line cooks and “expo” is always aware.

Line cooks wash their hands then don clean gloves as they prepare the food. When someone has an allergy to any item from the grill, we cook the item in a separate, clean and sanitized pan (with clean utensils) to avoid cross contamination. When the food is ready, they put the food in our food trays and give it directly to the expo. He or she clearly marks the tray and informs the Front Of House staff which item has the allergy.

2022 Update

While working on my Detroit gluten free dining guide, I had the chance to connect with Eve, the owner of Frita Batidos. She shared the following information.

“We do ask that guest with Celiac Disease let us know because we take extra precautions with this condition. For guests with Celiac disease we specify on our order ticket, do a verbal call to the expeditor, write it on a white board and have a dedicated person in the kitchen prepare and package the order from start to finish.

We still have the essay question on our Restaurant Test asking each staff member to describe Celiac disease in detail. They study from a version of the test with answer but take the final test without the answers in order to work independently on the floor at Frita. This is part of our mandatory front of the house training.

Over the past year and from our conversations with you, we realized we needed to focus more on training the back of the house to have the same level of understanding so that has been a big help all around!

We have tried to constantly improve our practices and training – and have focused on it recently in thanks to a staff member who worked with us over the Summer who has Celiac disease and was able to point out areas we could improve.

We do have a labeled, dedicated gluten free fryer, both in Ann Arbor and Detroit. We also have a kit in a zipped bag with dedicated gluten free cutting board, Chef’s knife, pot, pan etc…) in both Ann Arbor and Detroit! Hope all is well with you and yours and, as always, we are open to suggestions, feedback and areas to improve so I hope you will continue to do so! We SO appreciate your support!!!

Does Frita Batidos Have A Dedicated Fryer?

For anything that needs to be cooked in the fryer (like their DELICIOUS French Fries) away from contaminated items, Frita Batidos maintains a dedicated gluten free fryer. Like everything else, line cooks wash their hands then use gloves as they prepare the food.

Food delivery to the customer is the same as above. If a guest is eating with a group, their food will not be on the same tray to avoid cross contamination. Also, per requirements from the health department, a Frita Batidos has a manager that is Serv Safe Allergen Certified. While the law only requires one, Paterno understands the wisdom of having as multiple staff aware of the steps to keep food allergy guests safe.

Now that we’ve got the food safety covered, let’s get to the amazing food at Frita Batidos!

What Does Frita Batido Mean? 

The name of the restaurant, Frita Batidos, refers to Cuban burgers named Fritas. They create traditional fritas from chorizo, served on brioche buns, topped with shoestring fries and a remoulade-style sauce. Right now, Frita Batidos doesn’t carry gluten-free buns.

To be honest, I’m not sure it totally needs one. It was the MOST perfectly flavored patty I think I’ve eaten in my WHOLE LIFE.  However, manager Paterno Johnson was receptive to my suggestion of a local gluten-free bakery, should they ever decide to carry a gluten-free bun. I really appreciate his willingness to listen to suggestion.

As mentioned, alert the front of the house staff when you order, and they will cook them in a dedicated fryer. In addition to the regular fries, they also make garlic-cilantro fries that Paterno served to us with a lemon scented mayo. What a combination of flavor!

What’s The “Best Snack Ever”? 

Frita Batidos is more than just burgers, fries and milkshakes. They have some great sides as well. The staff aptly named this dish “The Best Snack Ever.” It’s comprised of coconut-ginger rice layered with black beans and melted Muenster, mixed with cilantro-lime salsa. I could seriously eat this every day.

You also have to try the twice-fried plantains. They taste a bit like a baked potato, again topped with black beans, Muenster, cilantro-lime salsa, and the addition of avocado spread and creme fraiche. If you are a vegetarian eater, you can eat well with these items, sans meat.

Does Frita Batidos Offer Gluten Free Desserts?

Of course, you have to save room for dessert. Although, life is short, so you might order one of their signature batidos first. Paterno gave us samples of the Coconut Cream and Passion Fruit batidos. I preferred the coconut, while my husband preferred the Passion Fruit.

I want to go back to try the Chocolate Espanol batido, which is dark melted chocolate steeped with cinnamon. If you’re looking for something lighter, they’ll make one with crushed ice and less ice cream. Or take a regular one up a notch and add a splash of rum!

Try the Deep Fried Plantains!

Frita Batidos is famous for their churros, which unfortunately are not gluten-free. However, Paterno was nice enough to give me a deep fried plantain, coated in cinnamon and sugar.

With that, he served me some of that delicious chocolate espanol, as well as “cajeta.” Cajeta is slow cooked caramel made from goat’s milk. I can’t even begin to tell you how CRAZY delicious this is. Make a batido with that and chocolate espanol and I would be in HEAVEN.

Frita Batidos Supports Local Michigan Businesses

Eve Aronoff is the creative chef and owner of Frita Batidos. She has won extensive awards for her cooking. After eating here, I can understand why. Eve and her staff are eager to support local, visiting local farms & purveyors and expanding their cooking skills through culinary expeditions.

They also place a high value on ongoing, continuing education for all staff. They take advantage of guidance from like minded businesses, such as Zingerman’s Zing Train courses. This and more is what makes Ann Arbor a great dining destination. There’s room for all the flavors of the palate here in A2. I look forward to returning to Frita Batidos soon and often.  Especially for happy hour, because there’s a discount on those amazing fries!
