<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finding an eatery that offers gluten free cones for their ice cream is a big deal! I&#8217;m sharing my suggestions for Michigan ice cream parlors with gluten free options, today. Make sure to check out the comment section for suggetions from others, too!</p>

<figure class="aligncenter"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1-600x600.png" alt="Michigan Ice Cream Stands with gluten free options" class="wp-image-5075" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Michigan-Ice-Cream-1.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I remember when I was newly diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Ice cream was my best friend. Since I could no longer eat sweet baked goods, I told myself I was allowed to eat as much ice cream as I wanted.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That being said, we need to remember that not all ice creams are created equal, and some are unsafe. There&#8217;s the obvious culprits that contain baked goods. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You also need to watch out for cross-contact and even some soft serve ice creams and frozen yogurts that contain gluten. Visit one of these places that offer great Michigan gluten free ice cream options!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How To Order Ice Cream When You Eat Gluten Free</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Gluten Intolerance Group wrote an article about <a href="https://gluten.org/faq/one-thing-i-enjoy-about-summertime-is-feeling-like-i-can-safely-enjoy-ice-cream-along-with-the-rest-of-my-family-do-i-need-to-have-any-concerns-about-including-it-in-my-gluten-free-diet/">what concerns people with Celiac Disease should have about buying ice cream</a>. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;When ordering from&nbsp;any&nbsp;food&nbsp;business&nbsp;including&nbsp;ice cream shops,&nbsp;ask questions.&nbsp;If a&nbsp;business&nbsp;serves cones&nbsp;that are not gluten-free, simply requesting&nbsp;a&nbsp;scoop in a dish instead of a cone&nbsp;does not guarantee safety. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When previous cone orders were filled, the same utensil used to serve your ice cream&nbsp;could&nbsp;have been used to push a scoop onto a cone, possibly resulting in&nbsp;cross-contact&nbsp;with the&nbsp;gluten-containing&nbsp;cone, transferring&nbsp;cone crumbs into the ice cream&nbsp;container.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When in doubt, be vocal about a need for assurance of a totally gluten-free product.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask&nbsp;if&nbsp;there is&nbsp;an ice cream container&nbsp;that&nbsp;has not yet&nbsp;been opened that could be used,&nbsp;along with clean serving utensils,&nbsp;to guarantee that&nbsp;your&nbsp;scoop&nbsp;is&nbsp;free of&nbsp;cross-contact with gluten.&nbsp;</p>
</blockquote>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How is this Gluten Free Ice Cream Parlor List Organized? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In short, I&#8217;m terrible at geography. However, I&#8217;ve tried to list businesses in order of similar area. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although Frosty Boy is listed first, as I think it has so many gluten free options that you won&#8217;t find elsewhere in the states. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, I don&#8217;t currently have any stand out locations in the Upper Peninsula, although I&#8217;m sure there are safe places to get ice cream up there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, you&#8217;ll find the ADDRESS to each business at the END of their respective sections. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.frostyboygr.com/">Frosty Boy</a> was a Grand Rapids tradition until 2005. It sat vacant for at least a decade until owners Kyle and Alyssa Naumann gave it new life. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They offer a variety of hard scoop ice cream, including flavors from Ashby&#8217;s, Country Dairy, Mooville, and Homemade. But what most of us are excited about are their soft serve options, including dairy free options as well. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What sets them apart are the EXTRAS. You can get your ice cream in a homemade gluten-free waffle cone, your flurry made with gluten-free cookies from<a title="Kind Crumbs: Proving Gluten-Free is Delicious!" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/03/17/kind-crumbs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Kind Crumbs</a>, or even get VEGAN soft serve!&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Oliver Gramm Ice Cream &#8211; Caledonia</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oliver Gramm Ice Cream opened in Caledonia in May of 2025. They make their own ice cream, one small batch at a time. I learned about this business from a follower, so I reached out to the owner for more information. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, we offer a list of gluten free ice cream flavors. Our flavors rotate often, but we list our Vegan/DF/GF flavors in a separate list on our menu and in our daily flavor updates in our social media stories. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many of our regular flavors are also gluten free and our staff can help customers choose one that works for their needs. However, the exclusively DF/GF flavors are kept in a separate freezer away from the others. </p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was told they will scoop out of a fresh tub if requested. But be mindful that they make their ice cream in small batches, so an unopened tub may not always be available. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other gluten free serving precautions include changing gloves, using a separate scoop, ad maintaining a separate dip cabinet for dairy-free/gluten-free flavors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those who are dairy free: &#8220;We make most of our dairy free flavors with a pea protein base, but a couple flavors are made with a coconut base when it suits the flavor better (example : Toasted Coconut Macaroon).&#8221; They do not offer Dole Whip. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They do not offer gluten free cones. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lastly, this is what the owners of Oliver Gramm would like to share with my followers- </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We make all our ice cream ourselves in house so we know every ingredient that goes into it. All our ice creams are free of artificial dyes and flavors. We make only hard scoop ice cream (no soft serve). </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our df/gf flavors are kept separate from our other flavors with a designated freezer and fresh scoops to avoid any cross-contamination. These are the safest options for guests who must avoid gluten. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, a large selection of our dairy flavors are often gluten-free as well unless they have a pie/cookie/cheesecake element listed in the flavor name (Cookies &amp; Cream, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, etc). </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We are always happy to help our guests select a flavor that would be safe for them based on the severity of their dietary restrictions and take precautions such as opening a fresh tub/using a new scoop, etc.</p>

</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">This Gluten Free Dessert is Neither Fried nor Mexican</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Mexican Fried Ice Cream at restaurants may be deep fried, my recipe requires no oil or frying. Instead, I roll frozen scoops of ice cream in crushed Cinnamon Chex. (I also add extra cinnamon, because I like strong flavors.) </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the name, history traces this frozen dessert to Philadelphia, not Mexico. (Although some suggest it may have connections to Japanese tempura recipes.) It became famous at Mexican- American restaurants, most notably Chi-Chi&#8217;s. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Relative-Foods-Cinnamon.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Cinnamon ground and packaged at Relative Foods in Michigan" class="wp-image-87686" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Relative-Foods-Cinnamon.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Relative-Foods-Cinnamon-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Coating Do You Use for Gluten Free Mexican Fried Ice Cream?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many recipes call for using corn flakes, toasted in butter, and then ground with cinnamon and sugar. Because gluten free corn flakes can be hard to find, I chose to use <a href="https://www.chex.com/products/cinnamon-chex">Gluten Free Cinnamon Chex</a> instead. Personally, I skip toasting them in butter, but I suppose you could try it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I grind the cereal in my Ninja blender, and add more cinnamon and a touch of sugar. When it comes to spices, I prefer <a href="https://relativefoodsfamily.com/products/cassia-cinnamon-powder">Relative Foods cinnamon</a>. (I used this in my <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-cinnamon-rolls/">gluten free cinnamon roll</a> recipe.) It&#8217;s ground in Michigan in an allergen free dedicated plant. They also sell gluten free flours, salt, and so much more. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Sauced-Ball-1.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Mexican Fried Ice Cream made with Cinnamon Chex" class="wp-image-87688" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Sauced-Ball-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-Cream-Reshoot-Sauced-Ball-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Long Does it Take to Make Mexican Fried Ice Cream? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is NOT a 5 minute recipe. To make sure the ice cream stays firm enough to coat, you need to scoop the ice cream, then freeze it so it remains solid. I find that 2 hours is sufficient to make it firm. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After that, you remove the ice cream scoops from the freezer, coat it in the cinnamon sugar topping and the REFREEZE them until you are ready to serve. As we know, ice cream melts fast, so plan ahead. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-cream-Reshoot-Bite-Taken-1.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Mexican Fried Ice Cream" class="wp-image-87687" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-cream-Reshoot-Bite-Taken-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mexican-Fried-Ice-cream-Reshoot-Bite-Taken-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can Mexican Fried Ice Cream Be Made Dairy Free? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Absolutely! The only dairy required in this recipe is the ice cream. If you need to avoid dairy, simply use your favorite dairy free ice cream. Given that most dairy free ice cream is sold in pints, you may need to make smaller scoops, like pictured below. I used a 1 and 1/2 tablespoon scoop for those. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, I use a homemade chocolate sauce for this recipe that is naturally dairy free. The ingredients include sugar, water, cocoa powder, salt and vanilla. <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/mindo-chocolate-michigan-bean-to-bar/">Mindo Chocolate</a> in Ann Arbor sells a wonderful gluten free cocoa powder that&#8217;s ethically sourced. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As mentioned above, this gluten free Mexican fried ice cream isn&#8217;t technically Mexican. For more traditional Mexican recipes, try my <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-enchiladas/">gluten free Black Bean Enchiladas</a>. Tacos come from Mexico, although these <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-choco-tacos/">Gluten Free Ice Cream Choco Tacos</a> are a United States creation. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While some may eat gluten free <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-arroz-con-pollo/">Arroz Con Pollo</a> for Cinco De Mayo, it technically originates from Spain. Theoretically these baked <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/baked-gluten-free-empanadas-colombian/">gluten free empanadas</a> came from Spain as well, but they are enjoyed in may cultures. In addition, these naturally <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/pupusas-gluten-free-hot-pocket/">gluten free pupusas</a> started out in El Salvador and Honduras. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are &#8220;Choco Tacos&#8221;?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Made by Klondike, Choco Tacos were a frozen treat that consisted of a &#8220;vanilla ice-cream core, topped with peanuts and crispy chocolate and wrapped in a sugar cone-like shell.&#8221; (<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/jul/26/choco-taco-discontinued-ice-cream" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Guardian</a>) However, Klondike discontinued it in 2022. For those of us with Celiac Disease, it impacted us little, as they contain wheat, and therefore gluten.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, you can relive your childhood memories with this simple gluten free choco taco recipe. While some recipes on the internet call for microwaving and unrolling preformed waffles cones, those are hard to come by. After years of pondering, I finally decided to make my own from scratch.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_122740-2-1.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Pizzelle Batter for Choco Tacos" class="wp-image-13956" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_122740-2-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_122740-2-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Ingredients are in Gluten Free Choco Tacos?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For my homemade recipe, I used King Arthur Measure for Measure flour blend. I simply substituted it in the pizzelle recipe in the Dash Instruction Manual. My Gluten Freee Choco Tacos recipe uses flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and eggs. I have not attempted using dairy free or egg free alternatives. For that, I&#8217;d recommend using GF Jules <a href="https://gfjules.com/recipes/gluten-free-pizzelle-recipe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gluten Free Pizzelle</a> recipe.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep in mind that different gluten free flour blends absorb moisture differently. Therefore, if you use a different flour than I did, you may need to adjust the moisture in your recipe. If it seems to thick and dry after making your first pizzelle, add a TEASPOON of milk. A little goes a long way.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133333-1-1.jpg" alt="Use a spoon for form Gluten Free Choco Taco shells " class="wp-image-13957" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133333-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133333-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Form the Choco Taco Shells?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I baked my gluten free pizzelle in a <a href="https://bydash.com/products/mini-pizzelle-maker" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dash Mini Pizzelle maker</a>. They cook in only two minutes. After removing the flat pizzelle from the maker, I used a taco holder to form them into a &#8220;shell.&#8221; If you don&#8217;t have a taco holder, you can drape a pizzelle over a wooden spoon, laid over a bowl. Please know that pizzelle cool quickly, so work swiftly. You may want to use tongs, as the pizzelle are hot when are done cooking.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_134327-1-1.jpg" alt="Fill Gluten Free Choco Tacos with Michigan Made Hudsonville Vanilla Bean Ice Cream" class="wp-image-13958" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_134327-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_134327-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Fill the Gluten Free Choco Taco Shells?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After your shells have completely cooled and hardened, you can fill them with your preferred ice cream. I choose Hudsonville Vanilla Bean ice cream. It&#8217;s labeled gluten free. In addition, I had the opportunity to tour their facility and ask about <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/hanging-out-with-hudsonville/">Hudsonville&#8217;s production protocols</a> You&#8217;ll need to allow the ice cream to soften for a few minutes, in able to scoop and place it in your shells.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I used a 1.5 tbsp Pampered Chef scoop to fill mine. However you can use a standard soup spoon, if you want to. I&nbsp;find I need to gently push the ice cream into the shell with my fingers. Therefore, be prepared with a wash cloth nearby if your hands get too messy. Once your shells are filled, you&#8217;ll want to pop them in the freezer for 30 minutes. This allows the ice cream to refreeze. I do this by laying them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133701-1-1.jpg" alt="Melt chocolate chips and coconut oil together for the perfect topping for Gluten Free Choco Tacos " class="wp-image-13959" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133701-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_133701-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Make the Chocolate Topping?&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I purchased the chocolate chips in this photo at Kroger. They contain no gluten, dairy or soy. I found them to be similar to Enjoy Life Chips, only cheaper. On my first test run, I melted some random chocolate I had on hand. However, I found the coating to be too thick. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On my second attempt, I combined coconut oil with chocolate chips. This created something more like &#8220;chocolate shell&#8221; that you&#8217;d put on ice cream. If you use refined coconut oil, there is not coconut after taste. If you can&#8217;t eat coconut, shortening should also work.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traditional Choco Tacos have chopped peanuts. If you want to add peanuts, or colorful sprinkles, make sure to add them immediately after dipping. The chocolate sets quickly. After I dipped my ice cream filled shells, I laid them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, and stuck them back in the freezer.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_143928-1-1.jpg" alt="Gluten Free Choco Tacos " class="wp-image-13960" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_143928-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/20230503_143928-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I Make These Gluten Free Choco Tacos in Advance?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I admit that this dessert includes multiple steps. In my first recipe test, I successfully made the gluten free pizzelle taco shells at night. Then I placed them in a sealed container, and filled them with ice cream and dipped them in chocolate the next day. The finished Gluten Free Choco Tacos can be stored in a sealed container, in the freezer.&nbsp; The TastyBiteBlog recommends wrapping them individually, after which they can be stored for up to 3 months. However, I have a feeling they won&#8217;t last long!&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Slice of My Youth</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What was your most memorable teenage job? For me, it may have been working at Mountain Jack&#8217;s. It was a fine dining restaurant in Lansing, MI, primarily known for two things. Prime Rib and Mile High Mud Pie. Ohhhh, that amazing Mud Pie. Sometimes after a long night of bussing tables, my fellow workers and I would chip in, order one for ourselves, and dig in with forks at the ready.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The combination of chocolate cookie crust, creamy coffee ice cream and decadent chocolate syrup was a welcome reward at the end of a long day on your feet. I imagined that the Mud Pie must have been difficult to make. Thankfully, this is not true! If you can crush cookie crumbs with a mallet and scoop ice cream, you too can make a dessert that you&#8217;ll enjoy sharing with your friends.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-overview-whole-pie-1-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8114" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-overview-whole-pie-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-overview-whole-pie-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Homemade Dairy Free Coffee Ice Cream</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I first wrote this recipe in 2o17, part of So Delicious&#8217; Frozen Fridays contest. However, as the dairy free ice cream market expands and changes, the ice cream I used is hard to find. I kept the dairy free Enjoy Life Foods cookie crust. I also kept the So Delicious Coco Whip. However, I felt this was an optimal time to make my own ice cream!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s easier than one might imagine. I used Thai Kitchen Coconut Cream and Coconut Milk. From there, after consulting many dairy free coffee ice cream recipes, I came up with an easy base. From there, I put it in my Cuisinart Ice Cream maker, and 15 minutes later, I had creamy coffee ice cream! You can also use 3 pints of premade ice cream, instead.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-close-up-of-slice-on-plate-1-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8115" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-close-up-of-slice-on-plate-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-close-up-of-slice-on-plate-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Top 8 Allergen Free, Optional</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I often mention, my husband teaches at a school where nuts are not allowed in the classroom. Therefore, I always pack his lunches without peanuts or tree nuts. In addition, I try to only send treats without those ingredients. This gluten free and dairy free mud pie uses sliced almonds as a topping, but you can leave them off.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speaking of toppings, my homemade dairy free chocolate syrup plays an important role in this treat. It&#8217;s a modification of an AllRecipes listing, which I first used on my <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-mexican-unfried-ice-cream/">Mexican unFried Ice Cream</a>. It keeps well in a the fridge to use over ice cream or mix into milk.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-bite-taken-1-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8116" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-bite-taken-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mud-pie-reshoot-bite-taken-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Pie Recipes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My blog contains many other pie recipes, for your pleasure. Grain free pies, such as this <a title="Grain Free Apple Pie Made with Chebe" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2015/01/26/apple-pie-with-chebe-crust-revisited/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grain free apple pie</a> or <a title="Blueberry Pie: Gluten-Free and Grain-Free" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2017/04/28/blueberry-pie-gluten-free-grain-free/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grain free blueberry pie</a>. This <a title="Gluten-Free Dutch Apple Pie –" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/11/28/gluten-free-dutch-apple-pie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dutch Apple Pie</a> uses a standard crust, as does my <a title="Gluten Free Strawberry Galette" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2020/02/04/gluten-free-strawberry-galette/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Strawberry Galette</a>. Looking for something smaller? Make these <a title="Jam Hand Pies : Gluten Free &amp; Homemade" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2019/08/21/jam-hand-pies-gluten-free/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jam Filled Hand Pies</a> or these <a title="Gluten Free Mallomars &amp; Moon Pies" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2019/12/06/gluten-free-mallomars-moon-pies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Creme Filled Moon Pies</a>!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previously I asked for your favorite type of pie. Top answers included lemon meringue, key lime, cherry and pecan. This <a href="https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/gluten-free-lemon-meringue-pie/69485d55-547d-4226-96a7-259967c01c3a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Betty Crocker Gluten Free Lemon Meringue Pie</a> uses Chex as&nbsp; crust, and this <a href="https://www.healthygffamily.com/recipe/key-lime-pie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gluten Free Key Lime Pie</a> from Healthy GF Family looks great. You&#8217;ll also love this <a href="https://www.glutenfreepalate.com/gluten-free-pecan-pie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gluten Free Pecan Pie</a> from Gluten Free Palate!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where is Grand Rapids?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those unfamiliar with the city, Grand Rapids is located about 35 miles east of Lake Michigan. The Grand River flows through the downtown area, which naturally separates it into east and west sections. Interstate 196 and US 131 also intersect downtown, which separate the city into north and south sections. Grand Rapids is north of Kalamazoo, east of Muskegon and west of Lansing. Grand Rapids is home to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.grr.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gerald R Ford International airport</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What is Grand Rapids Famous For?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grand Rapids is popular for so many reasons. Home to furniture manufacturing and Meijer stores, it has a vibrant economy and is also rich in arts and culture. Every year people visit the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artprize.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ArtPrize&nbsp;</a>competition and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.laughfestgr.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LaughFest</a>, in honor of the late Gilda Radner. </p>

<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-10291" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-The-BOB-1-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Attractions Should I Visit?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With so many great places, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I always recommend&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jbzoo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Ball Zoo</a>, with or without kids.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.meijergardens.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frederik Meijer Gardens</a>&nbsp;on East Beltline is also a “must visit” location. Both the indoor and outside attractions are amazing. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.grpm.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grand Rapids Public Museum</a>&nbsp;is one of my favorites, and I still need to visit the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gerald R Ford Presidential Museum</a>. Don’t miss the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.grcm.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grand Rapids Childrens’s Museum,&nbsp;</a>also located downtown!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Love baseball? Catch a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/west-michigan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Michigan White Caps</a>&nbsp;minor league game. They offer gluten free concessions, too! Visit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vanandelarena.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Van Andel Arena</a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href="https://griffinshockey.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Griffins&nbsp;</a>hockey, and music concerts. Make sure to add&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fultonstreetmarket.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fulton Street Farmers Market&nbsp;</a>and the&nbsp;<a href="https://downtownmarketgr.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Downtown Market</a>&nbsp;to your itinerary, also. I love&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bridgestreetmarket.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bridge Street Market</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://harvesthealthfoods.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvest Health</a>&nbsp;for delicious gluten free groceries. Visit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.experiencegr.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Experience Grand Rapids</a>&nbsp;for more tourist informatoin.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-10290" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1-200x200.jpg 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-LOVE-Squared-1.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Does Grand Rapids Offer So Many Gluten Free Options?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At one point, there was a strong and active Celiac Disease Support Group in the area. They helped educate physicians, hospital systems, grocery stores and restaurants on gluten free dining. Support group leaders visited restaurants to inspect their facilities and teach them how to minimize the risk of cross contact. The city also had a gluten free food fair.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the group and the fair no longer exist, the prelimary work they did made a lasting impact. Area restaurants realized that the more they accommodated those with dining restrictions, the more people would frequent their business. In addition, as awareness of Celiac Disease continues to grow, so do available dining options.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-Waffle-Squared.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-10292" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-Waffle-Squared.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-Waffle-Squared-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-Waffle-Squared-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Grand-Rapids-Waffle-Squared-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where Should I Eat?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I developed the list below with the help from those in the former support group. In full disclosure, I have not eaten at all of these locations. I placed an asterisk at restaurants where I have personally dined. In addition, please remember that food preparation methods can change, so ALWAYS&nbsp;<a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2018/08/08/dining-out-gluten-free-questions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ask questions before ordering</a>. This list is not exhaustive, but compiled with the help of those who know to ask questions about cross contact, including shared fryers, etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another comment in regards to “where.” I grew up in Lansing, and not Grand Rapids. In assigning eateries to areas, I started with the downtown area, and grouped them into areas, due to their geographic location to the downtown area. I embedded a map of these Grand Rapids gluten free dining suggestions, which you can use to get online directions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was blessed to be asked to spend the day with the folks at <a href="https://hudsonvilleicecream.com/">Hudsonville Ice Cream</a>,&nbsp;learning about their practices, production and products. A whole day devoted to ice cream? What&#8217;s not to love?!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">History of Hudsonville Creamery</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ll have to admit that prior to this trip, I didn&#8217;t know much about Hudsonville ice cream. I knew they were a Michigan company and I know that just over a year ago they took great strides to <a href="https://www.dbusiness.com/January-February-2014/Hudsonville-Ice-Cream-Launches-New-Flavor-and-Gluten-Free-Options/#.VZCU7lJPK_p">label their gluten free products</a>. (25 flavors to be exact!) After touring their facility and learning more about Hudsonville, I&#8217;ve become a faithful supporter for years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hudsonville Creamery began (as a co-op) in 1895. They started making their first ice cream in 1926. This means Husdonville has been around in some capacity for over 100 years! During that time, Hudsonville headquarters moved to Holland, Michigan. Although the address has changed, the commitment to excellent ice cream has not.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-12034" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1-200x200.jpg 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Cow-Jpeg-1.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Supporting Local Farmers</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hudsonville prides itself on supporting local farmers. I learned that all of their dairy comes from farms within 60 miles of their plant. The plant receives milk to the facility that was milked from the cow within the past 12 hours!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They took us over to Pyle Farm, located in Zeeland, to meet the dairy farmers that they work with. It was such a blessing, as I think far too often we take where our food comes from for granted. It reminds me the hard work that these people do every day to make sure that the food the comes to our table is great in quality and superior in safety.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/hudsonville-fireworks-ice-cream-sandwiches-1-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-12033" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/hudsonville-fireworks-ice-cream-sandwiches-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/hudsonville-fireworks-ice-cream-sandwiches-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hudsonville Keeps Gluten Free Consumers In Mind</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only did they tell us about their processes, they took us through the entire plant, allowing us to ask questions. As a person with Celiac Disease, I asked about the steps that they take to prevent cross-contact, especially as they have flavors that do contain gluten.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hudsonville maintains a very detailed allergen matrix. This matrix stipulates the order of flavors made. For example, they manufacture vanilla ice cream first. Other flavors that contain baked good mix-ins are produced later in the day. If there is any concern about safety, they will shut down the complete system and flush it. This is no small order, as it takes hours.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only do they take allergen safety steps in their facility, but they also offer training for scoop shops to educate them on allergens. While food allergy training primarily occurs through their website, Hudsonville also willingly sends staff to scoop shops to give in-person education. Many of the scoop shops on my <a title="“Must Visit” Michigan Gluten-Free Ice Cream Parlors" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2016/06/17/8-great-michigan-gluten-free-ice-crea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan Ice Cream list</a> serve Hudsonville.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Seaside-Caramel-Pint-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-12032" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Seaside-Caramel-Pint-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Hudsonville-Seaside-Caramel-Pint-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hudsonville Gives Back</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are also incredibly generous. I moved me to learn Hudsonville often donates ice cream tubs to local homelss shelters. They even keep a freezer in the back of the plant, by the loading bay, to give ice cream to the drivers to take home to their families. Gotta love that!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What&#8217;s your favorite flavor of Hudsonville Ice Cream? Let me know in the comments!&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>I participated in this excursion freely, received free product coupons, and was provided a free lunch. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Water, Modified Starch, Rice Flour and Rice Starch, Chickpea, Granulated Sugar, Faba Bean Protein, Canola Oil, Salt, Yeast, Sorbitan Monostearate, Ascorbic Acid, Pea Fiber, Modified Cellulose, Cultured Brown Rice, Brown Rice, Xanthan Gum, Psyllium Husk Powder<br>CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Please note that the ingredient list is slightly different than what is listed on the Rotella website. Rotella specifically makes this bun for Culver&#8217;s, to offer a &#8220;vegan&#8221; type bun. (It is not certified vegan.) </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Do Gluten Free Buns Cost Extra?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each Culver &#8216;s restaurant is independently owned and operated and will make their own decision on this. My location charges extra, and alerted me of that prior to ordering.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Are Culver&#8217;s French Fries Gluten Free?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, the Culver&#8217;s <a href="https://www.culvers.com/menu-and-nutrition/nutrition-and-allergen-guide">Nutrition &amp; Allergen Information </a>allows customers to use a &#8220;lifestlye &amp; allergen filter&#8221; to find menu items that fit your dietary needs. When you select &#8220;avoid gluten,&#8221; the Crinkle Cut Fries are listed as gluten free. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOWEVER, when one goes to their <a href="https://www.nutritionix.com/culvers/ingredient-search/premium">Ingredient Statement website</a>, it specifically states the following for their Crinkle Cut Fries- </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Contains One or More of the Following: Canola, Palm, Soybean, Sunflower), Modified Food Starch (Potato, Corn, Tapioca), Rice Flour, Dextrin, Salt, Leavening (Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Dextrose, Xanthan Gum. Cooked in Canola Oil. <strong>(Cross-contact occurs with other allergens, including gluten, during cooking).</strong></p>
</blockquote>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Which of Culver&#8217;s Sides are Gluten Free?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the following items that Culver&#8217;s lists as gluten free &#8211; Coleslaw, Mott&#8217;s Applesauce, and steamed broccoli. The Mashed Potatoes contain no gluten ingredients, as long as you order them without gravy. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Are ButterBurgers Grilled on the Same Surface where Wheat Buns are Toasted?<br></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While they do their best to minimize cross-contact, Culver&#8217;s restaurants are not gluten-free environments and cross-contact with other food items that contain gluten is possible.<br><i>&nbsp;(**Their beef pot roast is not cooked on a grill and therefore eliminates cross contact.)&nbsp;</i></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At my local location they have a separate toaster for their regular buns. Make sure to check with your location on this. The staff did mention that the grilled cheese is also cooked on the grill, but they have a dedicated section of the grill where they don&#8217;t grill anything else. If concerned after asking about this, I would ask if they can cook your meat patty on aluminum foil.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Do I Feel Safe Eating at Culver&#8217;s? </h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All in all, my husband and I agreed that we had a great experience, and anticipate that we would be interested in going again. At the bottom of the receipt it had directions for taking an online survey. As I have a smartphone, I was able to do it on premises and received a free cup of custard. Free ice cream is always a plus in my book!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I paid for my own meal and was in no way persuaded or reimbursed for my opinions. I provide this post simply to educate my readers about the experience I had and o suggest they make an informed decision about their dining experiences</p>
