Buddy’s Pizza History

Buddy’s Pizza has been a Detroit institution for decades. Literally. The original Buddy’s Pizza opened in Detroit, Michigan in 1946. This is Detroit’s iconic pizza parlor, from the small corner business to the large chain that runs today.

This gem is not just a Michigan favorite. In 2003 the Food Network claimed it as one of the “Nation’s Five Best Pizza Places.” Regardless of its growth, this pizzeria is still family owned.

How Does Buddy’s Prepare Gluten Free Pizzas?

I learned about Buddy’s Pizza from people in my support group years ago. Everyone who eat there LOVES it. They take some great steps to prevent cross contact, too. They make their own homemade gluten free crust.

First, staff sterilize their work space. When a customer orders a gluten free pizza at Buddy’s, staff change gloves and use clean utensils. They even use fresh sauce and toppings.

Gluten free pizzas are baked on the top rack, lined with foil, to prevent cross contact with other pizzas. Each of their location hires employs a staff member explicitly trained in food allergy preparation protocol.

Is Buddy’s Gluten Free Pizza Crust Dairy Free? No.

This Buddy’s Pizza crust tastes 100& amazing, is nice and fluffy, and contains no yeast. I asked the staff how they miraculously pull this off. Buttermilk. All those fantastic cultures provide the lift to this pizza.

You can choose your own toppings (from their gluten free menu, only) or order one of their signature pizzas. We chose pineapple and grilled chicken.

I highly appreciate that Buddy’s Pizza waitstaff bring a fresh pizza cutter with your order. Therefore, you cut your own pizza, further diminishing the chance for cross contact.

How Does Buddy’s Pizza Prepare Their Salads?

Each salad is prepared freshly in a clean bowl, which is brought to the table. Buddy’s Pizza makes a majority of their salad dressings from scratch, although not all of them are gluten free. I LOVE the Buddy’s Pizza Greek Salad.

Buddy’s Pizza and Bocce Ball

Buddy’s Pizza offers more than just food and drinks. The original downtown Detroit location also offers bocce ball. The tradition of bocce ball at Buddy’s Pizza is as old as the founding of the original location.

What’s bocce? This “lawn game” involves 8 balls, and a one small target. The game can be played between two people, or against teams. The connection between Buddy’s Pizza and bocce is so famous, that a Griffin Claw Brewing named a beer in honor of it. So head to Buddy’s Pizza on Six Mile, order a pizza, and play a round! (Beer is not gluten free.)

Where is Buddy’s Pizza Located?

Buddy’s Pizza operates 14 full service restaurants and 5 carry out locations, mostly in the greater Detroit area. I have personally visited the Novi location, as well Auburn Hills and Okemos, which is the only location outside of the Detroit area.

If you visit the Novi location, I highly suggest a short drive to the Dairy Twist Cafe on Benstein Rd in Walled Lake. They offer gluten free and dairy free soft serve ice cream, as well as gluten free cones! (Just one of many places to get gluten free ice cream in Michigan.)

Followers recently told me about Hola Arepa. The images on their Facebook page state that their entire menu is gluten free. Follow the on Facebook to see where they will show up next. It looks like they are often at Nelson’s Farm Market in Grant.

De Food Truck USA – Mesick (100% GF)

De Food Truck, located in Northern Michigan, offers a 100% gluten free menu. That includes fried fish, French Fries, falafel and more. Read more about this fantastic business in my review.

Tru Food Pizza Food Truck – Metro Detroit (100% GF)

Tru Pizza (formerly Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria) started in Troy, Michigan as a 100% gluten free pizzeria. Since then they have added a location in Plymouth, MI and have recently opened a food truck. You’ll find it mostly in the Metro Detroit area, and in Ann Arbor on Wednesdays at the Farmers Market. Follow them on social media to see their schedule.

Ace’s Donuts – Royal Oak (100% GF)

When I asked Ace’s Donuts what kind of flour they use for their donuts, they stated they use rice flour. You can find them most weeks at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Follow them on Instagram or visit their website.

Veged Out Food Truck – Waterford (GF Options)

While Vedged Out is NOT a 100% gluten free food truck, they have lots of gluten free options. In addition, they’re the old vegan food truck I’d recommend. They have some amazing gluten free wraps. You can usually find them at Oasis Health Foods.

Burger Bus – Marquette (Mostly Gluten Free)

Everything on the Burger Bus food truck is gluten free, except the brioche bun. Even their fried chicken is gluten free! Gluten free buns are available for $2.50 extra.

Fire and Rice – Lansing & Ann Arbor (100% GF)

I discovered paella when in college. My college roommate has Spanish extended family, and she made this often. The blend of saffron and vegetables and artichokes tastes like home to me.

Therefore, imagine my ecstatic joy when I realize that Fire and Rice makes all their paellla to be gluten free. It’s like heaven in a box. Follow them on Facebook to stalk find them near you!

Kona Ice – Multiple Franchise Locations (100% GF)

Many dessert food trucks exist out there. However, this is the only food truck I know where everything is gluten free. True, Kona Ice basically serves snow cones. But how great is it to relive your childhood with creative flavors? Kona Ice is a franchise, so you can find them in lots of cities. I visited a truck while at a Frankenmuth Truck Rally, and the owners reside in Fenton.

*Hero or Villain – Detroit Area (GF Options)

Disclaimer. I have not personally eaten at this food truck. Their business popped up frequently when searched for Michigan gluten free food trucks. They offer gluten free bread for any of their sandwiches.

Staff stated they “switch gloves, clean and sanitize surface areas and use separate utensils,” when preparing a gluten free sandwich. Simply let their staff know about your allergen when you visit. Visit their Facebook page to learn more.

Shuck ‘n’ Ladder Corn Roasting – Metro Detroit Area

I ate at Shuck N’ Ladder while at the Michigan State Fair years ago. They serve hot, buttered ears of corn, with different, optional toppings. I felt so excited to find food at the fair that I could eat. I am unsure if their potatoes and walking tacos are gluten free. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. Where is Detroit? 

Detroit is located in the southeast corner of Michigan. It is easily accessed via Interstate 75, which runs from Florida all the way to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. While one can get close to Detroit by air, the Detroit Metro Airport is actually located in Romulus. Therefore, one still must drive 25 minutes to get from the airport to downtown Detroit. The Detroit River separates the city from Windsor, in Ontario, Canada. 

What is Detroit Famous For? 

Once the capital city of Michigan from 1805-1847, Detroit is best known for its Motown music heritage and its sports teams. One can still visit the home of Henry Ford, a pioneer in the car industry. In fact, Detroit is still referred to as the Motor City, and is home to GM Headquarters.

Parking in Downtown Detroit

Parking in Downtown Detroit can be hectic. Parking garages are located downtown, and street side parking is also available. The Park Detroit website and app allow you to pay for parking online. The app also helps you find available parking. Also keep in mind that Detroit offers the People Mover, an elevated train that manuevers around Downtown Detroit. Even if you can’t park near your destination, you may be able to park in a structure and take the People Mover to where you want to go. 

Festivals and Attractions in Detroit

Detroit is home to the America’s Thanksgiving Parade, and many more holiday events. For the car enthusiast, visit the yearly Detroit Auto Show.  In addition, one will find many museums, theater and concert venues, including the Masonic Temple. Explore Belle Isle in the summer, and visit Campus Martius Park and Cadillac Square for year round activities. For a list of attractions to tour, check out the Visit Detroit website. 

Gluten Free Dining in Downtown Detroit

I’m sharing eight restaurants that offer gluten free options. Only one restaurant, Breadless is 100% gluten free. At the end of this list, I’ve included an embedded map so you can find these restaurants, easier. In addition, I’ve included an additional section of gluten free options in Metro Detroit, near the Detroit Zoo. Despite its name, the zoo is actually in Royal Oak, which is 20 minutes away.

Breadless (100% Gluten Free) 2760 Larned St, Detroit, MI 48207

Gluten Free Options:

Everything on the menu at Breadless is gluten free! They make sandwiches wrapped in greens. Choose from fun wraps like the Cardi B (Swiss chard + sliced chicken, pepper jack cheese, cilantro avocado sauce ) or the What the Kale (Dino kale + halal roasted chicken, cheese, bbq sauce).  Recently Breadless has operated food stalls at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, and Little Caesar’s Arena, home to the Pistons.

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

Because their menu contains no gluten, cross contact should not be possible. 

Frita Detroit 66 W Columbia St, Detroit, MI 48201

Gluten Free Options:

Gluten Free options include burgers without a bun, french fries made in separate hot oil, and their “Best Snack Ever.” The BSE is layered dish of Coconut Ginger Rice, black beans, melted muenster and cilantro lime salsa. And I admit, it really is the best. Their Batidos, or cuban mikshakes, are also gluten free.

Other options include “Beef Frita lighter on romaine, Chorizo Frita lighter on romaine, Chicken Verde Bowl, Tropical Salad with or without seared tofu, Twice Fried Ripe Plantains, Loaded Plantains, Crisped Plantains, ‘Best Snack Ever,” Shoestring Fries, Garlic Cilantro Fries, Black Beans, Coconut Ginger Rice, Tropical Slaw, Cinnamon Sugar Plantains, Batidos (w/the exception of the Batido de Trigo available occasionally as a special and the same applies to our housemade Paletas in the Spring/Summer months), Avocado Spread and Cilantro Lime Salsa.” 

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

Eve, the owner of Frita Batidos, recently shared with me their newly updated gluten free food order protocols. That includes at dedicated fryer, available at their Detroit and Ann Arbor location. They also have a kit in a zipped bag with dedicated gluten free cutting board, Chef’s knife, pot, pan, etc. (Again, available at both locations.)

“We do ask that guests with Celiac Disease let us know, because we take extra precautions with this condition. For guests with Celiac disease, we specify on our order ticket, do a verbal call to the expeditor, write it on a white board and have a dedicated person in the kitchen prepare and package the order from start to finish.” Both servers and kitchen staff are trained on what Celiac Disease is, and cross contact.

Gluten Free Options:

“Our waffle and coffee cake are gluten free, and we have gluten free bread for sandwiches. Everything but our Crunchwrap and soba salad are able to be made gluten free. All of our gluten free options are marked on the menu along with dairy free, vegetarian, and vegan options.”

Cross Contact Prevention Procedures:

“Our space is small, so typically only one thing is being prepped at a time, and everything is cleaned and sanitized afterwards. We only have one waffle and it’s gluten free! For sandwiches, they are wrapped in foil before being put on the press. Gloves are worn to prevent any cross contact.”

Mudgie’s Deli 1413 Brooklyn St, Detroit, MI 48226

Gluten Free Options:

Mudgie’s offers gluten free bread for any of their signature sandwiches. Choose from sandwiches like the Dad (ham and cheese with yellow mustard), the Mudgie (beef brisket, turkey breakfast, veggie cream cheese, lettuce, onion and honey mustard), or their Turkey Trot (turkey, cheddar dried cranberries, apples, walnut, honey mustard and mixed greens), and more. Certain sandwiches cannot be made gluten free, due to the toppings used. 

“We offer gluten free bread for any of our sandwiches with the exception of the the vegan corned beef reuben. This is due to the fact that the vegan meat is made from vital wheat gluten and therefore cannot be made gluten free.”

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

“We do not have a dedicated gluten free prep space. However, if an allergy is mentioned we do make all necessary precautions like cleaning the grill and board to keep the order safe.”

Gluten Free Options: 

Buddy’s Pizza owns many restaurant locations across the state of Michigan. Detroit, which is the original home of the Detroit style pizza, offers gluten free pizza and salads. Please be advised that their gluten free crust contains dairy, and costs an additional $2. It is only available as a 4×4 square pizza. 

Cross Contact Prevention Protocols:

In the past, Buddy’s restaurants maintain a separate gluten free prep space for preparing gluten free pizzas. I am emailing them to confirm that this is still true. 

Slow’s BBQ 2138 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216

Gluten Free Options:

When looking at the Slow’s BBQ main menu, most dishes are marked with a lowercase “g”, which means gluten free options are available. (Sadly, no gluten free mac and cheese.) They also offer gluten free buns from Rumi’s Passion.

Texas De Brazil * 1000 Woodward Ave Ste 1B07A, Detroit, MI 48226 *

Gluten Free Options:

Texas De Brazil offers a Special Diets menu on their webpage. It appears that the majority of their meats and salad bar contain no gluten. Their Brazilian cheese bread (like Brazi Bites) contain no gluten, nor does their jasmine rice or Sweet Fried Bananas. Dessert options include Crème Brûlée and Brazilian Flan

Restaurants in the Detroit Suburbs / Detroit Zoo

While all the sports teams (Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings) stadiums are in downtown Detroit, the Detroit Zoo is located in Royal Oak, Michigan. Troy and Berkley are north of the Detroit Zoo, and Ferndale is just south of the zoo. In addition, Troy is home to the Somerset Collection mall. I have marked restaurants where I have not personally eaten with an asterisk. Sandwiches Made from Greens? 

I will be the first to admit that I wasn’t sure I was going to like Breadless. I’m a girl who loves her carbs. And while I like spinach and lettuce, I’d never really eaten turnip or spinach greens, let alone chard or Dino kale. However, my husband and I were pleasantly surprised at just how much we LOVED our meal. 

After dining at Breadless, I reached out to LaTresha Howland, one of the co-founders of Breadless. I was so intrigued about their concept, and wanted to be able to share more about their mission with my readers. The text that follows are direct answers from her. 

Why Did Breadless Choose to Open a 100% Gluten Free Restaurant?

As a blogger, I’m just as interested in the “why” as the “what.” All too often, we see companies offer gluten free “options,” that may not be prepared in the safest manner. Therefore, I’m very appreciative that Breadless is a 100% gluten free atmosphere. 

LaTresha shared why they opened a dedicated gluten free restaurant. “Breadless was created because our CEO, Marc Howland, struggled for years to find healthy food options that would fit his lifestyle. He had trouble digesting bread, worked long hours in corporate America, and also attempted to stay fit at the same time.

For over 10 years, Marc was the guy going into every restaurant and making special requests. He would ask for a lettuce bun or lettuce wrap instead of bread, and what he got back were “side-eyes” and sloppy iceberg lettuce wraps. Sometimes he just received a protein on a bed of lettuce, that looked like an afterthought.

Frustration Leads to Inspiration and Innovation

“Marc got so fed up that in early 2019, he texted his then-fiance & now wife & Co-Founder, LaTresha Howland, photos of the lettuce buns, and candidly vented how it was ridiculous that there wasn’t a better alternative to the traditional sandwich. Marc knew that a place needed to exist that was specifically focused on sandwiches that are healthy & delicious without all the carbs and calories as a core product, not an afterthought.

LaTresha agreed that it was a great idea and that she wanted to help, because such a place needed to be accessible everywhere. Up to this point, Marc and LaTresha were just making lettuce sandwiches at home. Both quickly realized they needed someone to help take the menu and concept to the next level. Therefore, they reached out to their friend Ryan Salter, an experienced executive chef, caterer, and restaurant owner.

Ryan came on board and the product evolved completely away from iceberg lettuce to savory sandwiches made with leafy super greens like red swiss chard, turnip greens, kale, & collard greens. He also tailored each sandwich so that the taste profiles were different (and delicious!). We had (3) core sandwiches then: The Garden of Eatin’ (eggplant on collard), Bird is the Word (turkey on turnip), and Chardi B (chicken on swiss chard).”

What Ingredients Does Breadless Use? Are they Certified Gluten Free? Halal? 

While we knew our vision was to have a 100% gluten-free sandwich option that tasted good, Ryan’s culinary background allowed him to take this concept to the next level with a curated, chef-inspired menu aimed at offering something better, premium-even, to future customers.

We all decided to use the freshest, highest quality ingredients, from our partnership with Boar’s Head for our sliced meats, to working with local farms and suppliers for our leafy super greens, produce, and Halal chicken. A majority of our sauces are made in-house. The ones that are not, are kept to the same standards we employ to all of our products (low-sodium, low-sugar, gluten-free).

(Also, all packaging and straws are Eco Friendly.)

Does Breadless Offer Any Sides?

As far as in-house offerings, we have vegetable chips, potato chips, coleslaw and more.

As for beverages, Breadless offers 2 agua fresca flavors; Pomegranate and Cucumber. They also serve LaCroix and Brix Sodas.

Where is Breadless Located in Detroit?

Breadless is located in Downtown Detroit, on Jefferson, near the Riverfront. (Parking is on Larned St.) It’s located on the Joseph Campau Greenway Connector. The Joseph Campau Greenway extends from the Riverwalk to Vernor Highway, creating a trail for biking and walking. It includes “recreation and play features,” benches and outdoor power stations.  It’s about a quarter mile east of the Dequindre Cut Greenway. 

My husband and I visited Breadless after attending an event at the Eastern Market. Breadless is located about 2 miles from the market, less than a 10 minute drive. It’s a straight 6 min drive from Breadless to the Spirit of Detroit statue. From there, one can get on the Q Line or the People Mover and explore more parts of Downtown Detroit. 

I Wish Breadless was Closer to Me. Do They Have Plans to Expand?

LaTresha answered, “Though we’re highly focused on this location to start, what gets us particularly excited is our vision to create hundreds of entrepreneurs via affordable franchises, including lowering barriers to access to money, all while bringing leafy greens to communities everywhere.”

Breadless opened a second location in Rochester Hills in 2023.

Things to See and Do in Detroit

Detroit is a hub of entertainment and sports. Check out the Detroit Lions (football), Detroit Tigers (baseball), Detroit Pistons (basketball), or the Detroit Red Wings (hockey.) Attend a concert at Fox Theater or the Detroit Masonic Temple. Go to the Detroit Visitors Bureau website for even more ideas.

… to Push for Justice

Flint continues. There are so many words I can use to finish that phrase. For certain, living in Flint continues to present its challenges. It would take all my fingers and toes to count the number of times people have suggested that we move. I’d be lying if I say my husband and I haven’t discussed it. However, there is a remnant here in Flint who envisions a better future. Better water and schools. Better economy and community. For certain, it’s not going to be easy.

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not naive.  Six years after I shared about the “Flint Water Crisis”, our battle for legal justice continues. In the meantime, most of our water lines have been replaced. Our water quality has been restored.. This Politico article explains why we have clean water, but people still don’t trust it. Until all lead lines are replaced, we are encouraged to still filter our water. 

The previous mayor and city council canceled a previous agreement to get water from the Karegnondi Water Authority, because of concern of our inability to treat it properly. Instead, we agreed to pay Detroit for water for the next 30 years. Sadly, it may take 30 years to replace the trust our city has broken. A new mayor has us in negotiations to undo this.

… to Fight Crime

Flint continues to battle high crime. Police response times are terrible. Someone stole our central air a few summers ago. The police department never even showed up. Citizens have become apathetic in calling police for the crimes in their neighborhood. Therefore, statistics look like crime has diminished here in Flint. Flint continues to have its silence shattered by the gunshots of hateful violence. A few yearss ago, a gas station attendant was murdered in broad daylight, a victim of angry drug dealers. Only a block from my house.  It pierced my heart, and I shared about it in my gluten-free Pumpkin Chai Snickerdoodles recipe.

There are so many more negative things that I could highlight. To be honest, I have a hard time focusing on the good myself, sometimes. However, Flint continues to have bright shining moments, if you look for them amidst the darkness. New investment. Education expansion. Demolition of blighted houses, making way for new development. Sources of joy.

Flint continues to persevere.

There are people here with vision. Let me share a few, and bare with me if I run long-winded.

Communities First, Inc

Don’t pass this video by. PLEASE watch it. It makes me cry. It makes me cry, because the brokenness you see in this video is literally my neighborhood. The burnt out, abandoned apartments you see in the first 30 seconds were only half a mile from our house. But now they have been torn down. Natural beauty has now replaced ugly destruction.

We walk these streets. We volunteered at the abandoned, graffiti – covered Coolidge Elementary Glenn speaks of. However, it also makes me cry tears of joy. Of hope, because Communities First, Inc. has decided to take a stand. As Flint continues to rebound, it is non-profits like this that will change this city. If you want to help Flint rebound, invest in organizations like these.

St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center

The N.E.W. Life Center started when two nuns had a desire to see real change happen. What started as a concern to clothe the needy turned into a full scale sewing educational center and business. New Life Center started training women to sew and make scrubs for local hospitals. Now they clothe hundreds in Flint and beyond. Maybe thousands, as they now produce high quality vests for one of Michigan’s most iconic brands, Stormy Kromer.

New Life Center does more than job training. They house a food pantry, run a lawn care business run for men looking for jobs, and so much more. You can read more about their amazing accomplishments in this Flintside article. Want to invest in their vision? Visit their page to donate time, materials or money. Buy a tartan red and black Stormy Kromer vest,  which may allow them to employ and impact even more women.

Flint Crepe Company, Robb Klaty and Coffee

In my opinion, one cannot talk about downtown Flint without mentioning Robb Klaty. During a time when others were quick to leave Flint, Robb set up shop. Quite literally. Robb opened the Flint Crepe Company location in downtown Flint in 2011. He focused on great food with locally sourced ingredients. He also chose not to focus on himself. Every Tuesday a different charity is highlighted that receives a portion of the days tips.

Klaty’s investment continues to factor into Flint’s reconstruction. What started as one small business turned into a continuing downtown expansion. He now owns Tenacity Brewing, where he brews his own beer, and now Heyday Coffee. Klaty opened Heyday coffee when he realized he could provide an outlet for Blue Line Donuts, a business run by the local homeless shelter that used the project to teach men and women business skills.

Kettering University and the University Avenue Corridor Coalition

The transformation that Flint continues to experience along the University Avenue Corridor is astounding. Kettering University, formerly General Motors Institute, realized the positive impact they could, and should have on the community around it. Mobilizing surrounding businesses, they inspired the creation of the University Avenue Corridor Coalition. The result? Blighted, dangerous homes finally removed. A historic football stadium now resurrected to its former glory.

The change to the neighborhood is nothing short of breathtaking. Maybe breathtaking is the wrong word. Maybe the word is breath giving, as it restores hope. Want to help further the hope? Run in the CRIM that passes through this space. Attend a Flint City Bucks (USL league) soccer game. Did you known they’re national champtions for their league? Donate to Carriage Town Ministries, benefiting the homeless and the poor.

Uptown Reinvestment Initiatives

Flint continues to improve, partially at the hand of major investors. Uptown Reinvestment, wanting to “build a vibrant future for Flint,” invested big bucks into our downtown. With their help we have a new Flint Farmer’s Market, voted one of the best in the country. Uptown’s investment helped create the new Michigan State University campus downtown. This campus focuses on healthcare, training interns at local hospitals. Also, they use their resources to help mitigate the effects of the Flint Water Crisis

Most recently, Uptown’s passion for making old things new included the grand restoration of the Capitol Theater. Originally opened in the 1920’s, a new generation of Flint residents now appreciations the beauty of the past. Want to help in the reinvestment of Flint? Visit the Farmer’s Market. Take in a show at the renovated theater. Dine downtown, and enjoy the beauty of our city.

Flint City Art Project

In 2019, the Flint City Art Project started an ambitious goal. To paint beautiful murals across the city of Flint. Murals of chidren, the homeless, Beyonce, and so much more. Even Anthony Bourdain. Over 40 exist, and the Flintside website created amap to see all of the Flint murals, in less than an hour. It’s a perfect reason for a roadtrip.

And So Many Others

There are so many others investing in this city, more than I can possibly name. (Flintside strives to share many of them. I highly suggest subscribing to their online newsletter.) People and organizations and businesses that chose to stand up to fear and put down roots. Support them.

Come to a Flint Firebirds hockey game. Donate to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, as they feed over 330,000 people a year. That’s what Flint needs, people and businesses seeking out the good and encouraging it to grow.

As Flint continues to rebound, those of us living here will roll up our sleeves to help. You can invest in us too. Donate to those doing good. Visit our city. Run through our streets. Buy our goods. Join us for a cup of coffee. Quit using Flint on social media as a meme or potlical clapback.. And although some gave me flack for it four years ago, continue to pray for our city.

Pray that hearts and minds change, both for our citizens and our leaders. Most of all, stand up for us. When the media kicks us down, when memes make light of our stuggles, speak up for those who might be starting to lose their voice. Lend us a bit of your emotional strength, maybe your financial support, and let us show you just how amazing Flint can be.

Vinsetta Garage- A Union Joint Restaurant

I think I’m in love with Vinsetta Garage. Is it possible to love a restaurant? I mean, see an image from your last meal and actually have your heart go pitter-patt? That leaves you speechless? I’m sure that one may think I’m going a bit overboard. But after visiting my third Union Joint restaurant, I love this place with all my heart.

A Restaurant That Preserves History

If you’ve never been to a Union Joint restaurant (which includes Clarkston Union and Fenton Fire Hall), you’re really missing out. It’s more than just the food. Eating at one of these restaurants is an experience.

In a world where people are eager to tear things down, Ann Stevenson and her husband are in the restoration business. For example, the waiting area at Vinsetta Garage is lined with old repair tickets from when this garage was in actual operation. (Look for one with Chelios‘ name on it!)

The Oldest Mechanic Shop in Michigan

Vinsetta Garage is the oldest car repair garage in the state of Michigan. Actually, it’s the oldest garage east of the Mississippi.

It opened in 1919 and serviced generations of families who drove along Woodward Avenue. Mechanics still repaired care here, until Union Joints purchased it in 2012. A photo hangs on the wall of some of the original Vinsetta mechanics.

I love that Ann personally found every piece of decorative hardware, and repurposed them for this restaurant. There really isn’t anything else quite like it. There’s an old hot rod up on the wall, and car-related paintings by famous artists grace the walls.

The Best Time to Visit Vinsetta Garage

When we arrived, executive chef Aaron Cozadd greeted us at the door and showed us to our seat. We arrived at 1:45 on a Wednesday. This appeared to be a great time, any other time of the day you’ll likely experience a wait. After 5 p.m. they even have valet parking. Friday and Saturday nights, they have a live DJ spinning tunes while you dine.

Vinsetta Garage’s Gluten Free Menu

The phrase in the center of the menu really sums up the food theme here – Custom Detroit Eats. More than any other Union Joint, the meals here are customizable. This is great for those of us with Celiac Disease and other food allergies. Don’t eat meat? There are lots of vegetarian options too. Of course, Vinsetta Garage serves their famous macaroni and cheese, which they now offer gluten-free!

Unique Gluten Free Burgers

Try their 3 a.m. burger, spread with “homemade bacon jam, sriracha mayo, a sunny side up fried egg and chives”. That’s right- bacon jam. Think of pate only way better, because chefs prepare it from house made bacon. 

Vinsetta Garage also offers the famous Gluten Free Mac and Cheese that the Union Joints for which they are famous. In addition, you can also order one of their pizzas on a gluten free crust.

These Milkshakes Will Bring All the Boys to the Yard

Vinsetta Garage offers multiple gluten free milkshakes. While you can order a simple vanilla milkshake, I recommend the Salted Caramel. Or order their famous Faygo ice cream! In addition, they also offer gluten free key lime pie.

Other Union Joints Restaurants

Vinsetta Garage is just one of the many Union Joints restaurants. Other venues include Clarkston Union, which is the first Union Joint ever opened. They also own Honcho in Clarkston and Union Assembly in Detroit. While no longer with Union Joints, I will always be grateful for Aaron Cozadd, pictured on the right, who used to be their main chef.

Other Places With Gluten Free Options in Berkley, MI

I’m a huge fan of Republica, especially now that they’ve added brunch to their menu. For dessert I like Bombshell Treat Bar. In addition, if you’re around during the weekday, check out the Lunch Cafe, where most of their soups are gluten free.

I first learned about Sweet Bree’s bakery through word of mouth. A fellow blogger mentioned this bakery as I searched for vendors for an event. When I visited their Facebook page, I was blown away with the beauty of the cakes. Immediately, I reached out to Sweet Bree’s.

From my first conversation with Sweet Bree’s owner Briana Willis I realized she isn’t just a passionate baker, she’s a compassionate person. She caught up with me between her shifts at the local hospital, where she works as a nurse. Ironically, I recently underwent surgery, and had more questions than answers. She graciously responded to my concerns, and truly aided in my healing.

That is Willis’ goal in her bakery business as well. Sweet Bree’s wants to give you peace of mind about eating foods that you miss, while making sure they are prepared to meet your needs. Between her nursing job and her home-baker business, she is poised to be a great advocate for Celiac Disease. Learn more about Sweet Bree’s in Willis’ own words.

1. What inspired you to become a baker? Why the focus on gluten-free?

Almost 8 years ago, my middle daughter received a Celiac Disease diagnosis. Such a huge adjustment at first. Even as a nurse, there was much I didn’t know. After some time, I managed to convert our favorite family recipes to gluten-free dishes. We often entertained, and guests never realized they were eating was gluten-free baked goods. Compliments were passed back and forth. I realized then that -”Food can be free of gluten and still be tasty!” And, that’s when the business began.

2. Are there other highlights of your products? Dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free etc?

I consider myself a custom baker. There are customers who are not gluten-free but need a cake to be dairy free, etc. With me, they get both. I cater to all people with food allergies and intolerances. Past orders include soy free, corn free, and other speciality treats. I don’t use oats in my baked goods. My kitchen is inspected & licensed by the state of Michigan, and I am Serv-Safe certified.

3. What steps do you take to insure that Sweet Bree’s products are truly gluten-free?

I buy labeled gluten-free ingredients. In addition, I verify with manufacturers all ingrdients not specifically labeled gluten free. I use dedicated cookware, mixers, utensils, etc. My kitchen is 100% gluten-free, although it is not certified by an outside source.

4. Can you share a story of a customer who’s been greatly impacted by Sweet Bree’s baked goods?

I have many repeat customers, and lots of referrals from happy eaters. I receive many emails and texts from happy customers. They state how my baked goods allow them to enjoy treats that havent’ tasted in years. The reviews on Facebook say a lot about my products. I’m very proud to be able to make great gluten-free baked goods for the Celiac community and others as well.

5. What would you like consumers to know about your products and Sweet Bree’s?

I really enjoy cooking & baking. I love the challenge of trying to come up with new treats. When possibly, I buy organic and local ingredents. At first, I sought my business license because I wanted to sell wholesale. However, I don’t desire doing that exclusively. We lose connection with our customers that way.

People with these kinds of issues want to talk to the person making their food and connect with someone who can empathize with what they’re going thru. I’d really love to have a little cafe/bakery where someone can walk in and eat without having to worry about dietary restrictions and food allergies.
