Aren’t Trader Joe’s and Aldi the Same?

People often (incorrectly) assume Trader Joe’s and Aldi have the same parent company. The two businesses were separately owned by two German brothers. Originally the brothers jointly owned Aldi in Germany. However, after a difference of opinion, they amicably split the company into Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord.

Aldi Nord acquired the Trader Joe’s chain that started in California. Aldi Sud operates the Aldi locations in the United States. Confusing?  The Kitchn further explains the Aldi and Trader Joe’s connection, for those who want to dig deeper. However, like Aldi, Trader Joe’s relies on separate manufacturers to make their products, placed in Trader Joe’s packaging. The practice is often called “private label.”

Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Labeling Guidelines

Trader Joe’s website states “If you see “Gluten Free”on a Trader Joe’s product, this means that the product has been validated to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten (or made in a certified gluten free facility). Individuals with Celiac Disease or Gluten Sensitivity must avoid gluten for their health.”

Some people, myself included, choose to eat some items not specifically labeled gluten free, based on ingredients. Trader Joe’s has stated in past emails, “We do have many products that are made in facilities that don’t process gluten, even though it’s not labeled gluten free. Generally, [the reason it’s not labeled] is because the supplier doesn’t want to pay for certification.”

Gluten Free Bread & Baked Goods

Trader Joe’s stocks gluten free white sandwich bread and gluten free whole grain bread. Many people declare this to be their favorite gluten free bread.

They also sell gluten free bagels, and I especially love the “Almost Everything” Bagels. Not a fan of “everything”? They sell plain gluten free bagels as well. Every fall people look forward to the gluten free pumpkin bagels from Trader Joe’s.

This small Gluten Free Yellow Mini Sheet Cake from Trader Joe’s is SO good. My husband and I bought this to celebrate our anniversary, just the two of us.

Gluten Free Cookies

People LOVE Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Joe Joe’s cookies. The gluten free chocolate chunk cookies pictured below are definitely a fan favorite. They also have gluten free oatmeal cookies as well. They stock many more gluten free treats than I can picture here. **Update- The Gluten Free Joe Joe’s now contain oat flour. 

Gluten Free Frozen Foods

This highly popular Gluten Free Cauliflower Gnocchi is now labeled gluten free. I really like Iowa Girl Eats’ tips on cooking cauliflower gnocchi. Trader Joe’s also sells cauliflower and butternut squash pizza crusts, which ARE labeled gluten free.

I have not personally tried these gluten free chicken nuggets. I know my friend Amanda of Eat at Our Table loves them, as do the rest of her family.

You’ll find many Trader Joe’s gluten free foods in the freezer section. This gluten free macaroni and cheese works great in a pinch. They also stock a gluten free cheese pizza, and a gluten free Chicken Tikka Masala. There are also many other items, again not specifically labeled gluten free, that contain no gluten ingredients.

Don’t forget breakfast. These gluten free toaster waffles are way cheaper than the name brand ones you find in other stores. They also sell gluten free (and dairy free!) frozen pancakes.

Gluten Free Cereal & Grains

Can’t Eat Oats? Then you’ll love this gluten free and grain free granola from Trader Joe’s. It does contain almonds, so if you have a tree nut allergy you will want to avoid this.

Gluten Free Dry Goods & Spices

You can stock your pantry will all sorts of gluten free goodness at Trader Joe’s. They sell their own gluten free all purpose flour blend, as well as almond flour. In addition, they stock various mixes. Their gluten free pancakes mix is an old standard.

While the Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Brownie Mix is a permanent product at the store, their website says the Ube Mochi pancake and Waffle Mix is a limited item. (But I swear I see it there all year round.)

At this point, I think the words “Everything But The Bagel” are synonymous with  Trader Joe’s. On top of the famous seasoning blend, they how have Everything but the Bagel smoked salmon and Everything but the Bagel yogurt dip.

This is not listed on the Trader Joe’s gluten free list, however none of their spices do either.  However, I consume this, their baking powder, and cocoa all  without issue.

While these Trader Joe’s Fried Shallots are not specifically labeled gluten free, they have only two ingredients – Shallots and Palm Oil. These are a great substitute for French Fried Onions at Thanksgiving.

Gluten Free Fresh Foods

For those who are wondering, Trader Joe’s offers a wide variety of fresh foods. Produce, bagged salads, a large cheese selection, dairy and non-dairy alternatives and eggs.

This fresh gluten free fettuccine is popular with so many people. If you liked the ones during the Aldi Gluten Free Special Buys this year, I’m 99.9% certain this is the exact same manufacturer, which is Taste Republic.

I love that Trader Joe’s offers a plain gluten free ravioli year round. I have a video where I make breaded and air fried ravioli. These would be PERFECT for that recipe. In the fall, Trader Joe’s also sells a gluten free pumpkin ravioli.

This gluten free pizza dough can be a huge time saver. It’s sold fresh, not frozen, so you don’t need to wait for it to thaw.

Gluten Free Snacks

So many tasty gluten free snacks abound at Trader Joe’s. Some are unique, like this Gluten Free Sweet and Spicy Rice Cracker Mix.

In addition, they sell some fun potato chip flavors, some of which are seasonal.These Ranch Flavor Rolled Corn Tortillas chips are SO much fun to eat!

Gluten Free Seasonal Items

Just like Aldi, every season new Trader Joe’s gluten free finds hit the shelves. Everyone’s excited about the fall offerings every year, including this gluten free pumpkin pancake mix, and their gluten free pumpkin bread mix. In addition you’ll find their maple butter, apple cider jam, and new gluten free pumpkin bagels at this time.

These Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie Spice Donut Holes are a newer item. They are SO good. I could easily eat them all in one sitting if left to my own devices. They also sell gluten free chocolate donut holes year round.

Different seasons offer different items. I *think* this gluten free cornbread mix is only available in the fall.

Stuffing and frozen gluten free pie crusts hit the shelves last year mid to late October.

I took the time to research and compare each ingredient list. Some are simply brands we know and love, in a new box. Others are products that Aldi likely asked brands to tweak a bit, to get them to a lower price point. Either way, you don’t have to be completely sad that May is over!

Identical Replicas

Many of the Aldi gluten free special buy products come from established gluten free companies. Aldi simply repackages them in their own labeling. These products have identical, word for word, ingredients on the label. (Photos in this section courtesy of the brands they represent.)

The ingredients for the Live G Free English muffins are IDENTICAL to the Katz Gluten Free English Muffins.  If you sign up for their newsletter, they often highlight sales thru their website. Not a fan of online shopping? Use the Store Locator on their website to find their products near you.

Aldi has offered the Katz Texas Toast in the actual Katz packaging before. They’ve also offered it in the Live G Free packaging. It’s fairly safe to assume the Aldi Texas Toast is in fact made by Katz. Use the Katz store locator to find them near you, or order from Amazon.

Live G Free Gluten Free Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins and Blueberry Zucchini Muffins (not a May item)

Noticing a trend here? Earlier this year Aldi offered Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins. While some thought they were made by Veggies Made Great, after looking at the ingredient list, I’m fairly certain they were made by Katz. Order straight from the Katz website or from Amazon. Live G Free Gluten Free Fresh Pasta (Fettuccine, Tortellini, etc.)

The ingredient label for the Aldi noodles matches exactly with Taste Republic gluten free noodles. Find them at Whole Foods or use their store locator to find them near you. You can now also order Taste Republic products, including their dairy free tortellini, on Amazon.

Live G Free Gluten Free Fresh Lasagna Roll Ups and Stuffed Shells

One of Manini’s Gluten Free Lasagna Roll Ups signature features is the use of ancient grains in their products. This includes sorghum, teff, millet and amaranth. Due to increased cost of shipping, you can no longer order frozen items directly from them. They are, however, available through Amazon Fresh. You can also use their store locator to find their products near you. I know I’ve seen them at Fresh Thyme in East Lansing, Michigan.   

LiveGFree Gluten Free Fresh Pizza Dough

This FRESH gluten free pizza dough is made by Manini’s. The use of whole grain millet, sorghum and other ancient grains is what convinces me this is the same manufacturer. This product is vegan and rice free. Just like the fresh ravioli, you need to use Amazon Fresh to find it near you. Or try their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Frozen Cheese Ravioli

I thought Conte’s made the Aldi ravioli. Wrong. A company named Celentano produces them. The “dried whole eggs” as an ingredient in both brands clued me in! Use their “where to buy” feature to find them near you.

Live G Free Gluten Free Egg Rolls

There are very few companies that make gluten free egg rolls. (Feel Good Foods and Lucky Spring Rolls) I’m fairly certain that Feel Good Foods make the Egg Rolls for Aldi. Check out their website for more information.

Earth Grown Vegan Vegetable Potstickers (not a May item)

Much like the Earth Grown Vegan Potstickers at Aldi, Feel Good Foods offers a gluten free vegan potsticker. (They also offer a chicken one, if you eat meat.) Use the Feel Good Foods website store locator to find their products near you. 

Fremont Fish Market Gluten Free Boom Boom Shrimp (Not a May item)

While I haven’t compared the ingredients one-to-one, it is highly possible that Aldi sources this product from Northern Chef. Northern Chef makes many gluten free frozen seafood products. In the past I’ve seen them at Meijer, but not sure if they’re still available there. (Royal Asia also sells a gluten free Boom Boom Shrimp. Royal Asia and Northern Chef are owned by the same parent company.)

Live G Free Gluten Free PB + J Bites (and other flavors) (not a May item)

Without a doubt, I knew Michigan’s own The GFB made the  Aldi gluten free special buy “bites.” Order from their website, Amazon, or use their store locator to find them near you!

Live G Free Gluten Free Cheesecake Sampler

The biggest showstopper in the Aldi gluten free special buy lineup is the gluten free cheesecake sampler. Based on ingredients, these are made by Atlanta Cheesecake Company. Stores that seem to have these on a continual basis include Food Lion, Weis Markets, and Acme Markets. Daiya Foods makes dairy free cheesecake that is also gluten free. It can be found at many grocery store chains. 

Incredibly Similar Ingredients for Past Items

These Aldi gluten free special buy products contain ingredients VERY close to certain brands. Sometimes, Aldi will ask them to reformulate a product to make it slightly cheaper. I share why I believe these are the brands you’re looking for.

Live G Free Gluten Free Stuffing

You don’t need to hoard all the stuffing every Fall. Aleia’s makes gluten free stuffing year round. Meijer sells it, as well as Fresh Thyme and other stores. While they don’t have separate “turkey and chicken” flavors like Aldi, this stuff is just as good. 

Live G Free Gluten Free Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns

When I searched Google for the ingredients in these buns, Little Northern Bakehouse showed to be the closest. The ingredients listed are almost identical to the Aldi buns, minus the millet and chia. Bonus, these contain no eggs! They are often available at Fresh Thyme Markets. Use their store locator to find them near you.

Live G Free Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Is the Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin bread your favorite May Aldi gluten free special buy? Little Nothern Bakehouse makes an almost identical product as well! You can order a case of them on Amazon.

No Comparison – Unique Items

I performed my best sleuthing. However, I failed to find exact or even incredibly close replicas of these May Aldi gluten free special buy products. Therefore, I mention brands that offer great alternatives.

Live G Free Gluten Free Boxed Skillet Dinners

I can’t find a name brand company that sells meals like this. Walmart sells a similar product, so hopefully you can find it in your local Walmart. You can also try Iowa Girl Eats’ recipe for Homemade Cheeseburger Helper. 

Live G Free Gluten Free Frozen Skillet Meals

I almost bet that Conte’s produced the Aldi gluten free special buy skillet meals. However, the ingredients didn’t match at all. However, I imagine they taste similar. Order directly from Conte’s website, or from Gluten Free Mall. (P.S. They make gluten free stuffed shells, too!)

Live G Free Gluten Free Croutons

These croutons list rice milk as the first ingredient. Despite my searching, I found no identical gluten free crouton counterpart. However, I highly recommend Aleia’s gluten free croutons! Order from their website or use their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Angel Food Cake Mix

The only commercially made gluten free angel food cake mix I know of is produced by Kinnikinnick in Canada. While the Aldi LiveGFree mix is not identical, the Kinnikinnick may be a good alternative. Order it through their website or Amazon. Also, Meaningful Eats created a perfect gluten free Angel Food Cake recipe!

Live G Free Gluten Free Lemon Cake Mix

Love that lemon cake mix? (It pairs so nicely with my mother-in-law’s lemon curd filing!) Authentic Foods makes the closest replica I could find. Order it online through the Gluten Free Supermarket site or use their store locator.

Live G Free Gluten Free Key Lime Cake Mix

Friends, I’m at a loss. I found no gluten free cake mixes with key lime flavor. If you crave key lime flavor, you might want to try this new Gluten Free Banana Lime Bread from GF Jules. Someone mentioned that they used King Arthur Measure for Measure in Trisha Yearwood’s Key Lime Cake and it tasted fabulous.

Never Any Chicken with Orange Sauce or Sweet and Sour Chicken

I got nothing. I searched the internet for over an hour, and I couldn’t find a similar product. Every frozen orange chicken meal I found contained wheat. I recommend this Crispy Gluten Free Orange Chicken recipe from Mama Gourmand, instead.

I love Aldi. They sell many gluten free, money saving, products. However, I remembered a notice on the Gluten Free Watchdog Facebook page about a bratwurst they sell. They label these sausages as “gluten free.” However, they also list “beer” as an ingredient.

Now, in the United States, the FDA denies a gluten free label to anything that contains malt as an ingredient. Unless made from 100% gluten free grains, most beers in the world do not meet that criteria. However, this product falls under the jurisdiction of the USDA, not the FDA. Why? Because it contains meat. Therefore, I contacted Tricia Thompson a.k.a Gluten Free Watchdog on what to do.

She directed me to this article on her website, that outlines the steps on reporting a misbranded gluten free product to the USDA.

At the time I spotted this, our country found itself in the midst of a government shutdown. Therefore, many USDA employees lacked a job, or the income which which to perform it. I called the phone number she listed, but an automated reply stated the service was not available. Therefore, I turned to the power of the internet, and contacted the various parties involved with my facial misbranding concerns.

How to Report a Concern to Aldi, Online

I used Aldi’s online contact form to report my facial misbranding concern, first. If at all possible, I attempt to connect with the immediate business. I have done so in the past with success. Often, it accomplishes things quickly. I used their online comment system, filling out my complete concerns, and uploading the pictures I took. It took me less than 10 minutes to do. They impressed me by calling my back the same day! They listened to my concerns, gave me a claim number, and told me the supplier would get in touch with my. (To date, they have not.)

Reporting Facial Misbranding, Online, to the USDA

I used the online USDA reporting system Gluten Free Watchdog told me about. Like the Aldi system, I found it easy AND QUICK to use. It only took my information, and did not allow me to upload pictures. Surprisingly, the USDA promptly emailed me and asked me for more information. They requested a list of information, and I took time to address each one. Below is the bulk of the email I sent them, about the facial misbranding of the Aldi sausages.

“My concern about the misbranding / mislabeling is that while this item is marked “gluten free” by Aldi, it contains beer. While I know that the FDA definition of “gluten free” is not necessarily also delegated by the USDA, it is my understanding that the USDA feels that meat and poultry producers should follow this law. Per FDA regulations, nothing can be declared gluten free if malt is an ingredient, even if that product tests to under 20 ppm. Being that Aldi prices are relatively cheap, I am highly doubting that these Aldi Beer Bratwurst are made with beer that originated from non-gluten grains. Also, these sausages are imported from Germany, and did not originate in the United States. This gets trickier, because Europe’s definition of “gluten free beer” is different than the US. The US does not allow “gluten removed” beers to be labeled as gluten free, where as Europe does. Also, Germany is now making beer with an altered form of barley called “Kebari” that I don’t think is approved for US consumption. It may be possible that the beer in these brats is made with that.

No Establishment Number?

The USDA asked for the establishment number (inspection number) for the sausages. However, Aldi imports these sausages from Germany. They are not inspected in the United States. Foreign products sometimes utilize a different numbering system. After a minute or two of online research, I discovered that the “EV-717” Vet. Control No traced back to a plant in Germany. This number specifically relates to the plant where HoWe’s sausages were produced.

Interaction with HoWe’s

While neither Aldi nor the USDA directed me to do so, I contacted HoWe. Their website states all their products are gluten and lactose free. Therefore, I emailed them inquiring “What is the grain source of that beer? Is the beer made with only gluten free grains, or does it contain malted barley?” Their first reply simply stated that the ingredients and product test to under 20 ppm of gluten. I replied to their email, asking them to answer my original question. They replied, “We can confirm, that the beer does not contain malted barley.” But what will the USDA say?

Response back from USDA –

Two weeks after submitting my facial misbranding the concern, I received the following response from the USDA

“Dear Margaret,

Thank you very much for the additional information, and for your patience. Upon investigation, we determined that the product is not expected to contain a level of gluten that would pose a risk to public health. However, the company will be required to remove the “gluten free” claim from the label. Please find attached a formal letter regarding the outcome of your case.” (emphasis mine)

It takes a village, friends. The government is understaffed, underfunded, and some manufacturers are uneducated. The USDA & FDA don’t need us to be their enemies. They need us to be their eyes and ears. We need to continuously encourage them to do the right thing. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, right?

Aldi launched the LiveGfree product line in spring of 2018. New Aldi’s gluten free products have ebbed and flowed over the years. In addition, each year, they stock their shelves will “Special Buys” or “Aldi Finds” that make us run to the store in excitement.

Does Aldi Have a Gluten Free Section?

Years ago, Aldi did have a separate gluten free endcap. However, that no longer exists. Gluten Free products at Aldi are now spread throughout the store.

Does Aldi Label Their Gluten Free Products?

Aldi gluten free products bear their own labeling. However, not all products that are gluten free may bear that label. Also, while Aldi offers a gluten free product line, LiveGFree, they sell other gluten free products that are not part of the LiveGFree line.

ALDI knows that a lot of our customers have special dietary needs and are looking for clear, easy–to-understand ingredient information on the products we sell. The best way to be certain a product is gluten-free is to look for products with the certified gluten-free seal, like our exclusive liveGfree product line. All of the products in our liveGfree line are required to be certified by an approved organization that verifies each product’s levels of gluten is less than 10 parts per million.

From the Aldi FAQ

I emailed Aldi asking for further clarification about their products that have a gluten free label, but are not part of their LiveGFree product line. Below is the (very prompt!) reply they sent me.

Thank you for contacting us.

ALDI knows a lot of our customers have special dietary needs and are looking for clear, easy-to-understand ingredient information on the products we sell. The best way to be certain a product is gluten-free is to look for a gluten-free seal on the packaging. ALDI products with a gluten-free symbol not included in the liveGfree product line must meet FDA regulations by containing less than 20 parts per million of gluten.

What Gluten Free Certifications Does Aldi Use?

Additionally, all products within our liveGfree line are certified by an approved organization that ensures less than 10 parts per million of gluten is present within the finished product which exceeds the FDA’s regulations. liveGfree products are certified by one of the following three independent certifying bodies which is listed on the packaging:

• The Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) (Gluten Intolerance Group)
• Gluten-Free Certification Program (GFCP) (Beyond Celiac)
• Celiac Sprue Association (CSA) (It is now called the National Celiac Association.)

What About “May Contains” Statements?

Please note, if a product is labeled as gluten free but has a “may contain wheat” statement on the ingredients label, this means the product does not contain wheat, but wheat is present in the manufacturing facility. The “May Contain” statement is not required by law; however, the FDA requires strict allergen control programs to prevent cross contact for the top 8 allergens, which includes wheat.

To help you determine if other products contain gluten, look at the ingredients list and the “contains statement,” located under the ingredients list. In many cases, the list will specifically state whether the product is “gluten free.”

Does Aldi Sell Name Brand Products?

Yes, they sell quite a few name brand products. While many are “Aldi Finds,” some name brand products are available all the time. For instance I can buy Crest toothpaste and Dawn Dish soap there. My most frequent brand name purchase is my Lifeway Kefir.

Does Aldi Take Manufacturer’s Coupons?

No, they do not. Aldi takes great pride in their low prices. They often run sales, which you can find on their website. Aldi shelves now have digital price tags. Tags with a red background are sale prices.

What Other Things Should I Know About Shopping Gluten Free at Aldi?

First, know that you’ll have to use a quarter to retrieve a shopping cart. It will be returned to you when you return your cart. Secondly, know that Aldi is a large store. They aren’t multiple brands of products. For example, you won’t be able to choose between multiple brands of butter. There is simply Aldi’s house brand of butter. It really makes shopping faster and easier, IMO.

Third, know that many of the items available at Aldi are sold as “Aldi Finds.” These products are available for a short period of time. When they’re gone, they’re gone. PLEASE DON’T HOARD ITEMS. Take only what you need, so that more people are able to try products.

Everyday Aldi’s Gluten Free LiveGFree Products

While some locations may carry certain Aldi’s Gluten Free products, others may not. I chose to share first what I can find in my store all the time. 

Aldi’s Gluten Free Baking Mixes

They carry chocolate, yellow and pancake baking mixes. (Sadly, the recipe I used to make these strawberry shortcakes is no longer on the back of the box!) In addition, they also stock a cornbread mix of which I failed to take a picture! All mixes are free of soy as well!

Snacks and Crackers

One note about these crackers. They do contain oat fiber, although they are certified gluten free through GFCO. Aldi also sells grain free pretzels, that are on an end cap. Aldi recently started selling more grain free and Keto items, and offers almond crackers as well.

Aldi Gluten Free Granola

You’ll find Aldi’s gluten granola stocked near the cereal. I am unaware of whether these are made with purity protocol oats. They are however certified gluten free. They come in three flavors – Raisin Almond , Apple Almond and Cranberry Cashew.

Aldi’s Gluten Free Pasta

For those looking for more whole grains in the pasta, Aldi’s gluten free and organic quinoa blend pastas taste fantastic!

Aldi’s Gluten Free Frozen Section

There are four sections where I find specific LiveGFree items. The first aisle houses the baking mixes and snacks. The second aisle stocks the pasta. The third location to find Aldi’s gluten free products is the freezer section. Gluten free pizza is a must, right? They offer cheese and pepperoni pizzas. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten one. Have you tried them?

Chicken Nuggets. Every (small and big) kid’s favorite! Aldi’s gluten free chicken nuggets are certified gluten free through GFCO.

Bread Aisle

Many swear that Aldi’s gluten bread is their favorite, over any other brand.] It comes in white and whole grain.

My store carries the LiveGFree General Tso’s all the time. Personally, the sauce is too spicy for me. Sometimes I buy this and add my homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce instead.

That’s the end of what I would call the “everyday” Aldi’s gluten free finds. However, every May, Aldi releases some fun and exciting products. I’ll start with the biggest draw!

May Gluten Free “Aldi Finds”

Every spring, usually in May, Aldi offers many gluten free “Aldi Finds.” This is in connection with Celiac Disease Awareness Month. Here are just a few of the products that seem to return every year. Miss them when they’re gone? Most Aldi gluten free products are “private label,” meaning another company makes them and they’re sold in Aldi packaging. Aldi Gluten Free Cheesecake Sampler

Every year people go CRAZY over Aldi’s gluten free cheesecake. Certified gluten free, it includes four separate flavors.

Aldi LiveGFree Frozen Skillet Meals

Aldi’s Gluten Free Skillet meals were new this May. Did you buy any? They are certified gluten free through NSF, which is located in Ann Arbor. Did you read about my visit there? 

Aldi LiveGFree Ravioli

When Aldi’s gluten free line launched 4 years ago, they sold individual frozen ravioli meals. This may they sold a large bag, theoretically big enough to share with someone else. I bought the Spinach and Cheese ravioli. Did you try it?

LiveGFree Empandas

So true story, the other day my husband made lunch. I asked what he was cooking, and he said “empanadas.” I replied, “the Aldi’s gluten free ones in the freezer?” Ironically, no, he had made his from scratch. Which means I get to eat these another day!

Gluten Free Stuffing and French Fried Onions

I can still find the Aldi’s gluten free stuffing at my store. I think it’s a hold over from Easter. However this, and gluten free French Fried Onions, show up every year around Thanksgiving.

A few other Aldi’s gluten free items I found include Gluten Free Bites (which I’m sure are made by The GFB) and cheese crackers. I also find them on the shelves of my local Aldi at other times of the year.
