My Dining Experience
My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at this Farmington, Michigan restaurant in the spring of 2024, about a month after they opened. Not only did we enjoy our meal (the mac and cheese was great), my husband and I were able to chat with owners Ryan Kavanagh and his wife, Shawn Kavanagh. Below are Shawn’s answers to some of my most FAQ.
What led you to create a 100% Gluten Free Menu at Heights Brewing?
As someone who can not have gluten myself, I understand the importance of finding a safe place to eat. It is something that is taken for granted by all, until you find yourself diagnosed with Celiac or Gluten intolerance. My Husband, Ryan Kavanagh, and I both know the stress that going out to eat holds, and wanted to offer that safe space for others.
Is your menu also free from any other allergens? I.e, nut free, dairy free
We serve nothing that contains peanuts or tree nuts. We offer a dairy free dressing for our coleslaw. Unfortunately we don’t have dairy free cheese options at this time. We use soybean oil for frying.
What steps do you take to prevent cross contact in the kitchen?
As mentioned previously, all food prepared in our kitchen is gluten free. When we receive an order from a customer with other food allergies, staff is notified. Staff change gloves, change out any knives or utensils, and use a new sanitized cutting board.
What training does your staff receive on preparing GF meals safely?
We teach our staff about the side effects, and what Celiac Disease / Gluten intolerance does to a person. They do not bring any gluten containing foods into the kitchen at any time.
What’s your most popular gluten free menu item at Heights Brewing?
Our backyard BBQ-inspired menu offers a lot of options. As for favorites, it’s a tie between the Brisket Mac and Cheese and the cornbread Muffins. I love being able to offer comfort foods that are so often off limits to us at other restaurants.
Do you offer gluten free desserts?
Not yet but we are working on a few recipes, one being a bread pudding. If you’re looking gluten free baked goods, we’re a short 15 minute drive from Rumi’s Passion in Plymouth.
Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?
We do offer a gluten free beer, as well as cider and seltzers. You can see all of our all gluten free alcoholic beverages on our menu. Don’t drink alcohol? We make our own cola and root beer!
*Note- We do serve non gluten free beer, but they are always on separate lines. “We created two grain mills, regular and gluten-free,” said DesignTeam Plus architect Harold Remlinger in a news release. “Both rooms will have exhaust systems, so they are removing any particulates in the air.”
What unique events do you offer at Heights Brewing? Karaoke? Trivia?
We have Record Spin Night every other Wednesday. Bring your favorite record with you to listen to, or pick from the many we have available. For Lions home games we have watch parties and play the game on a 22 foot screen. We just started Karaoke and will be holding it once a month. Trivia nights just started this year on Thursdays, from 6-8 pm.
Do you have outdoor seating?
No patio seating as of yet, but we hope to add it next spring.
What additional things would you like my followers to know about your business?
We are in the heart of Downtown Farmington When you join us for dinner, plan extra time to walk around and enjoy the beautiful city. Visit the Downtown Farmington website to see the many activities the city hosts throughout the year.
In addition, we’re part of the of Syndicate social district. This area allows “patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating downtown bars and restaurants to enjoy in designated outdoor areas such as Riley Park and Dinan Park.”
Do you have parking on premises? Any tips on traveling to your business?
We offer ample parking directly behind our building. Our restaurant is just a short 2 minute drive from I-96.
