<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;re not feeling well. You wonder if your&#8217;re a hypochondriac After all you&#8217;ve talked to &#8220;Dr Google&#8221; a hundred times, looking for possibilities and answers.&nbsp;Are you a candidate to be tested for Celiac Disease?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="600" height="300" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HOw-to-Get-tested-for-Celiac-Disease-accurately-twitter-600x300.png" alt="HOw to Get tested for Celiac Disease, accurately twitter" class="wp-image-6742" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HOw-to-Get-tested-for-Celiac-Disease-accurately-twitter-600x300.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HOw-to-Get-tested-for-Celiac-Disease-accurately-twitter-300x150.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HOw-to-Get-tested-for-Celiac-Disease-accurately-twitter-768x384.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HOw-to-Get-tested-for-Celiac-Disease-accurately-twitter.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Has a family member  been diagnosed, and they&#8217;re urging you to get checked out? The idea of having an autoimmune disease is distressing enough. The thought of taking the steps to found out for sure may seem daunting. It&#8217;s not a surprise. There are a lot of competing voices out there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a deep breath. I&#8217;ll share a bit of my own journey, facts from trustworthy organizations, and try to help you figure out how to best navigate your concerns on being tested for Celiac Disease.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Don&#8217;t Change Your Diet Before Antibody Testing</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="400" height="267" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/MooCluckMooBurgerwithlogoinbackground.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-344" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/MooCluckMooBurgerwithlogoinbackground.jpg 400w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/MooCluckMooBurgerwithlogoinbackground-300x200.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/MooCluckMooBurgerwithlogoinbackground-350x233.jpg 350w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve heard so many heart breaking stories of people who&#8217;ve stopped eating gluten prior to being tested for Celiac Disease. Maybe they did it on their own because they wanted to feel better. Maybe a doctor told them to stop prior to testing. DON&#8217;T DO IT! All of the accurate testing methods we have to date require the consumption of <a href="https://celiac.org/live-gluten-free/glutenfreediet/what-is-gluten/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gluten</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wheat Allergy vs. Celiac Disease. Vs. Gluten Sensitivity</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe you&#8217;re thinking, &#8220;If I feel better eating gluten-free, what&#8217;s the difference?&#8221; <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/archives/faq/why-do-you-insist-i-eat-gluten-for-a-diagnosis-when-i-feel-better-on-a-gluten-free-diet" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">There&#8217;s a lot of difference</a>, according to the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. There are three medical issues linked to wheat (wheat allergy, Celiac Disease, and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) that are distinctly different and require different treatments. Celiac Disease has many associated health issues, such as thyroid disease, osteoporosis, and other intestinal issues. It is important to have an accurate diagnosis to make sure you are getting proper follow-up care. Also, the term &#8220;<a href="https://www.celiacandthebeast.com/2017/07/no-you-dont-have-a-gluten-allergy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gluten allergy</a>&#8221; isn&#8217;t accurate.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="500" height="334" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/out-of-order-stomach.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-8645" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/out-of-order-stomach.jpeg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/out-of-order-stomach-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/out-of-order-stomach-350x233.jpeg 350w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What If It&#8217;s Actually Chron&#8217;s Disease?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, Crohn&#8217;s Disease and Celiac Disease have many overlapping symptoms, and again require different treatments. (I actually know of a young man who was misdiagnosed for years with Celiac Disease when in fact he had Crohn&#8217;s. Not fun.) There are over 300 symptoms that are associated with Celiac Disease, which can make it difficult to diagnose. You owe it to yourself to know for certain!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">My Doctor is Worthless / Refuses to Test Me</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know that there are plenty of not-so-great doctors out there. I&#8217;ve had my fair share. For those living in Michigan, I highly recommend the doctors at <a title="Michigan Medicine Celiac Disease Program" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2020/05/29/michigan-medicine-celiac-disease-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Michigan Medicine Celiac Disease Program</a>. The Celiac Disease Foundation also provides a <a href="https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/find-a-healthcare-practitioner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">list on their website of doctors, dietitians and other medical professionals that they trust</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Ask Your Doctor to Run Some Blood Tests</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="500" height="333" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/blood-draw.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-8642" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/blood-draw.jpeg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/blood-draw-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/blood-draw-350x233.jpeg 350w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A. Celiac Disease Antibody Panel</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Doctors have&nbsp;tested for Celiac Disease through the years with a variety of blood work tests. As medical science gets better, so do the tests. As of today, the best test is &#8220;tTg-IgA&#8221;. This is short for <a href="https://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Clinical+and+Interpretive/82587" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies.</a> It is highly accurate and is positive in 98% of those with Celiac Disease. It is also low in what we call &#8220;false positives.&#8221; This means that it will accurately come back negative in 95% of those who do NOT have Celiac Disease.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What About False Positives and False Negatives?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;<i>There is a risk of a false positive especially for people with associated autoimmune disorders like Type 1 diabetes, chronic liver disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, psoriatic or rheumatoid arthritis and heart failure, who do not have celiac disease.</i>&#8220;<br>Because there is some wiggle room, doctors SHOULD run these additional blood antibody tests-</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Endomysial Antibodies (EMA), total serum IgA, and Deamidated Gliadin Protein (DGP)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also please know, that as great as science is, it is still possible for lab tests to come back with a false negative. If you still feel awful, and especially if you have a family history of Celiac Disease, continue to consult with your doctor. Share this guide from the <a href="https://celiac.org/celiac-disease/diagnosing-celiac-disease/screening/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celiac Disease Foundation</a> if they seem unsure of what tests to run.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Antibody Testing in the Black Community</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recent research has shown that antibody testing in the Black community is not always accurate. <a href="https://www.beyondceliac.org/research-news/black-people-biopsy-confirmed-negative-blood-test-results/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A 2022 study showed</a> that &#8220;Eighty percent of Black patients with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease in the registry had TTG test results that were less than the upper limit of normal, compared to about 9 percent of non-Hispanic white patients in the registry.&#8221; I urge my Black friends to test for an upper endoscopy, even if antibody testing doesn&#8217;t suggest Celiac Disease. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG-600x600.png" alt="" class="wp-image-83274" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/How-to-Test-Celiac-IG.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">B. Genetic Testing</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scientists have now been able to decipher where the sequences of Celiac Disease reside on our genetic makeup. At this point, genetic testing can only be used to <b>rule out</b> Celiac Disease. <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/archives/faq/can-you-have-celiac-disease-without-having-the-genes-for-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Doctors state</a> that if you do not test positive for HLA DQ-2 or HLA DQ-8, you cannot have Celiac Disease.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, simply having those genes don&#8217;t mean that you DO have Celiac Disease. A large portion of the population (30%) has those genes, but only 1% of the population develop the disease. Because of this, <strong>genetic testing CANNOT be used to diagnose Celiac Disease in those who have already stopped consuming gluten.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Meet with a Skilled Gastroenterologist for an Upper Endoscopy</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/maggie-endoscopy-square-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8643" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/maggie-endoscopy-square-2.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/maggie-endoscopy-square-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/maggie-endoscopy-square-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/maggie-endoscopy-square-2-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is me getting ready for a follow-up endoscopy with my new gastroenterologist. A small bowel biopsy, via endoscopy, is the gold standard for being tested for Celiac Disease. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2001. Fast forward to 2017. My original gastroenterologist followed up only ONCE. He never scheduled follow-up antibody tests to make sure my body was healing. Neither did he check me for osteoporosis, thyroid or other issues. After a move 60 miles away, I decided it was time for a change.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My endoscopy was pretty easy. I didn&#8217;t need to drink any junk (that&#8217;s for a colonoscopy), and I had to not eat anything for about 10 hours prior to my procedure. Once I was in the procedure room, they were finished in less than 15 minutes. I was under complete anesthesia the whole time. I hear stories by some that weren&#8217;t under anesthesia, either because they didn&#8217;t want to be or their doctor was foolish.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Exactly is an Endoscopy?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ll explain what an endoscopy is, as that seems it is what makes most people most anxious in being tested for Celiac Disease. During an endoscopy, they stick a small tube with a camera in it to visibly inspect your esophagus, stomach and the duodenum (top part of the intestines.) They also take small bits of tissue, called a biopsy. Tiny, tiny bits of tissue. Small, barely there bits that go under a microscope. These bits are tested and inspected for damaged villi, which are responsible for absorbing our nutrients. <a href="https://youtu.be/Ce5igE6Mkiw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">This video is great for children</a> who are anxious about underoing an endoscopy.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Many Samples Should My Doctor Take?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure that your gastroenterologist is taking at least 6 samples from various places in the duodenum. One sample is not enough to make a definitive diagnosis. Celiac Disease can affect one patch of the intestines and not another. More samples are always better. This medical standard in Celiac Disease testing is better explained in the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/archives/faq/what-is-an-endoscopic-biopsy" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">explanation of an endoscopsic biopsy</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There may be a day in the future when we will  have less invasive <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20670718" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ways to diagnose</a> Celiac Disease. But until then, I will personally still advocate for an biopsy via endoscopy. During the biopsy, doctors might notice items of additional concern. For example, my follow-up endoscopy revealed a hiatal hernia.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Meet with an Educated Dietitian and Other Resources</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/black-doctor-square.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8644" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/black-doctor-square.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/black-doctor-square-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/black-doctor-square-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/black-doctor-square-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So you&#8217;ve been poked, prodded, tested and inspected. You&#8217;ve been tested for Celiac Disease and the results are positive. Now what on earth do you do? It&#8217;s not as simple as &#8220;just take gluten out of your diet.&#8221; I mean, that&#8217;s what we need to do, but it&#8217;s a big learning process. What is gluten? Where does it hide? What other nutritional deficiencies should I be concerned about? Can I ever eat pizza again?</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1 After Diagnosis &#8211; Find a Knowledgeable Dietitian</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where a good dietitian who is versed in Celiac Disease is a good place to start. I would again use the CDF <a href="https://nationalceliac.org/celiac-disease-support-groups/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">provider directory</a> to find one a knowledgeable dietitian. Remember, dietitians have to learn A LOT in school, and some may not be well versed in Celiac Disease. I know <a href="https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gluten Free Watchdog</a> has offered, in the past, to help people find a good dietitian.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2 &#8211; Develop a Support System</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always recommend finding a local Celiac Disease support group. You can find some in <a title="Celiac Disease Resources in Michigan and Beyond" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/2012/11/27/links-for-newly-diagnosed-with-celiac-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">my list of local and national resources</a>.&nbsp; Many groups have a dietitian who advises their group as well. They are also the people who have been navigating and living with this disease everyday They are the ones who have walked in the shoes that you now find yourself in. They know the emotional side of Celiac Disease.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="400" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/support-group-diverse-1-1.jpg" alt="celiac support group" class="wp-image-8647" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/support-group-diverse-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/support-group-diverse-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/support-group-diverse-1-1-350x233.jpg 350w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are lots of good online resources for those of us who are newly diagnosed. The <a href="https://gluten.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gluten Intolerance Group</a>, the <a href="https://celiac.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celiac Disease Foundation</a>, and <a href="https://www.beyondceliac.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Beyond Celiac</a> are all organizations devoted to helping those with Celiac Disease. They all excel at certain aspects of Celiac Disease management. <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center</a> is an excellent resource as well. Their &#8220;FAQ&#8221; section is the biggest searchable question database I&#8217;ve ever seen.&nbsp;The offer a free <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/ebook/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">E-book</a> to help you &#8220;Jump Start&#8221; your gluten-free lifestyle.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Be Careful of Who You Follow Online</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are lots of self proclaimed experts online. Make sure that whomever you are following is providing sound medical advice. While I usually don&#8217;t &#8220;call out&#8221; pages I disagree with, I have reservations about Celiac.com and the Gluten Free Society. The first, <a href="https://glutendude.com/media/celiac-com-cannot-be-trusted/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">as explained by Gluten Dude</a>, has lost its credibilty. The second has always been about making money, and promotes unsound medical advice. Just remember, if someone is spouting something too good to be true, it likely is.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hopefully I&#8217;ve given you some information that&#8217;s been helpful in regards to being tested for Celiac Disease. I will state clearly that I&#8217;m not a doctor, dietitian, nurse or &#8220;certified&#8221; medical professional. I am a previous Celiac Disease support group chair and a Celiac Disease advocate. I&#8217;m a fellow &#8220;gluten free gal,&#8221; whose been diagnosed with Celiac Disease for over 20 years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m walking this journey with you, every step of the way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>How were you diagnosed with Celiac Disease? What part was most concerning for you? What insights can you share with those who are about to be tested for Celiac Disease? Please share your thoughts below!</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Celiac Disease is An Autoimmune Disease, Not a Food Allergy</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease. This can be confusing because sometimes you&#8217;ll even hear someone with Celiac Disease refer to it as an allergy when we&#8217;re <a title="Dining Out Gluten Free? – Ask These Questions First!" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/dining-out-gluten-free-questions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">eating out</a>. (More on that on another day.) </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An autoimmune disease is a &#8220;disease in which the body produces antibodies that attacks its own tissues, leading to the deterioration and in some cases the destruction of such tissue.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Examples of other autoimmune diseases include Type 1 Diabetes, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis and more. To make it more interesting, autoimmune diseases are like birds &#8211; they like to flock together. When someone has an autoimmune disease, they are likely to develop another one later in life. We&#8217;re a blessed bunch, aren&#8217;t we?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-90625" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members-500x500.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/1-in-14-family-members.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Celiac Disease is Genetic</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celiac Disease is also a genetic disease. This means that the &#8220;code&#8221; for this disease is passed on through our genes to our offspring. For example, my grandmother and father both have Celiac Disease. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interestingly enough, simply having the genes for this disease does not automatically mean that you will develop it. Thirty-five to forty percent of the general population carry the HLA DQ2 or HLA DQ8 genes, but only 1% of them will actually develop Celiac Disease. This is why genetic testing is not sufficient to diagnose the disease. Only to rule it out.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="750" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Blood-Tests-and-Endoscopy-3-600x750.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-90627" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Blood-Tests-and-Endoscopy-3-600x750.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Blood-Tests-and-Endoscopy-3-240x300.jpg 240w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Blood-Tests-and-Endoscopy-3-768x960.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Blood-Tests-and-Endoscopy-3.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Does One Get Tested for Celiac Disease?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So how does one get tested for this autoimmune disease? The two B&#8217;s &#8211; blood work and biopsy. And for these tests to be accurate you have to &#8220;B&#8221; eating gluten. (See what I did there? I&#8217;m so punny.) Doctors traditionally order a Celiac Disease panel <a href="https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/screening/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">that screens for the tTg, EMA, and DGP antibodies</a>. I explain this more in depth on my post on how to get<a title="How to Get Tested for Celiac Disease, Accurately" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/how-to-get-tested-right-for-celiac/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> tested for celiac disease, accurately</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If those come back with a high level of antibodies, the next step is a <a title="To Biopsy or Not to Biopsy? A Celiac Question" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/biopsy-or-not-celiac-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">small bowel biopsy</a> done via endoscopy Before you panic, an endoscopy is performed by passing a tube through the throat, so there&#8217;s no need to drink the &#8220;junk&#8221; prior to this procedure. People sometimes comment that it&#8217;s highly invasive. Sure, there are some tissue samples, but more cutting and anesthesia is given when someone has their wisdom teeth out. It&#8217;s really not that bad. At least in my opinion.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/body-2-1-600x800.jpg" alt="How Does Celiac Disease Affect the Body?" class="wp-image-10080" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/body-2-1-600x800.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/body-2-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/body-2-1.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Does Celiac Disease Affect the Body?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I mentioned above, the antibodies created by ingesting gluten destroy the body. Specifically, the antibodies destroy the villi that line the intestinal wall. Villi (vill- eye) are small finger-like projections that line the wall of the bowel. They&#8217;re little nutritional vacuums, sucking up all the vitamins and minerals from the food we eat.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They absorb the calcium we need for strong bones, the iron we need for red blood cell production, the B6 vitamins we need for metabolism. The list goes on and on. Without those little guys, we&#8217;re one big heap of malnutrition. Our body systems can&#8217;t function properly without those nutrients, which is why Celiac Disease has so many symptoms and is often misdiagnosed.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="750" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Disease-Awareness-Slides-Instagram-Post-45-1-600x750.png" alt="" class="wp-image-90629" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Disease-Awareness-Slides-Instagram-Post-45-1-600x750.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Disease-Awareness-Slides-Instagram-Post-45-1-240x300.png 240w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Disease-Awareness-Slides-Instagram-Post-45-1-768x960.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Celiac-Disease-Awareness-Slides-Instagram-Post-45-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Symptoms Does Celiac Disease Cause?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to this malnutrition, Celiac Disease causes some very unpleasant symptoms. Some of these issues can be embarrassing. Before I was diagnosed, I had the most foul smelling gas. I had chronic constipation. Some symptoms can be painful. Joint pain plagued me all throughout college</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some of the symptoms can be dangerous. There are many times that I had racing heart rates, which made me anxious that I was having a heart attack. Beyond Celiac shares a list of <a href="https://www.beyondceliac.org/celiac-disease/symptoms" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">celiac disease symptoms</a>, as well as a symptom checklist you can share with your doctor.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Celiac-Disease-truths-not-all-in-my-mind-1-1-600x600.jpg" alt="Celiac Disease truths not all in my mind" class="wp-image-5400" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Celiac-Disease-truths-not-all-in-my-mind-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Celiac-Disease-truths-not-all-in-my-mind-1-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Celiac-Disease-truths-not-all-in-my-mind-1-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Celiac-Disease-truths-not-all-in-my-mind-1-1-200x200.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">It&#8217;s Not In Your Head. It&#8217;s in your Gut.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among these symptoms are also neurological and mental health issues. I think this is important to include, as anxiety and depression is on the rise in this country. While these are very real diseases which often require medical intervention, it&#8217;s worth mentioning that the food we eat can play a large part in the way we feel emotionally.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are those with Celiac Disease who may never have physical symptoms from ingesting gluten, but have very serious panic attacks. I personally had one every morning for a year prior to my diagnosis. It&#8217;s definitely not fun. I also share this for those who may think that &#8220;a little&#8221; gluten won&#8217;t hurt someone with Celiac Disease. Please don&#8217;t mess with our food, because it can literally mess with our minds.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Celiac Disease is Life Changing, Not Life Ending</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celiac Disease changes more than our bodies. It changes our relationship to food, and often to other people. Social engagements often revolve around food, therefore we need to learn to navigate relationships as well. However, this disease does not have to define us or feel like a death sentence. In fact, a gluten free diet helps our bodies to heal so we can live our best life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, it often feels overwhelming, especially in the beginning. Let&#8217;s take some baby steps, together, in a series of articles I&#8217;ve written. First, let&#8217;s learn about the<a title="Gluten-Free: Safe, Unsafe, and by Whose Standards" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-safe-unsafe-and-by-whose/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> gluten free diet, and what&#8217;s safe and unsafe to eat</a>. Next, let&#8217;s discuss how to <a title="Physical and Emotional Care for Celiacs" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/physical-and-emotional-care-for-celiacs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">take care of ourselves after receiving our diagnosis</a>, both physically and emotionally. Lastly, we&#8217;ll discuss venturing <a title="Eating Out and Celiac Disease Resources" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/eating-out-and-celiac-disease-resources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">outside of the home to eat with others, and resources</a> that can help us learn more about this disease, and keep us healthy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Welcome to the Celiac Family</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hopefully this primer has been helpful. Please know I have a whole <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/category/living-gluten-free/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">category on my website devoted to living with Celiac Disease</a>. It includes articles about research, food labeling, and so much more. I also have a post about &#8220;<a title="15 Celiac Disease Truths We Wish You Knew" href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/celiac-disease-truths-we-wish-you-knew/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Celiac Disease Truths I Wish you Knew</a>,&#8221; that contain images and memes you can use to educate others.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last but not least, a few things you I want you to &#8220;hear.&#8221; One, you did not cause this to happen to you&nbsp; (or your children.) It happens, so please lay aside any guilt you may have. Also, please know you are not alone. There are many in our community who are eager to help. <a href="mailto:margaret@miglutenfreegal.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Email me</a> or reach out to me on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/miglutenfreegal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">social media</a> anytime!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People often ask in Facebook groups about Trader Joe&#8217;s gluten free options. For those who don&#8217;t have a location nearby, they&#8217;re eager to know what to buy when they finally go. Hopefully this list can give friends a start!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-grocery-bag-1-1-600x900.jpg" alt="trader joe's grocery bag" class="wp-image-7331" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-grocery-bag-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-grocery-bag-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aren&#8217;t Trader Joe&#8217;s and Aldi the Same?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People often (incorrectly) assume Trader Joe&#8217;s and Aldi have the same parent company. The two businesses were separately owned by two German brothers. Originally the brothers jointly owned Aldi in Germany.&nbsp;However, after a difference of opinion, they amicably split the company into Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aldi Nord acquired the Trader Joe&#8217;s chain that started in California. Aldi Sud operates the Aldi locations in the United States. Confusing?&nbsp; The Kitchn further explains the <a href="https://www.thekitchn.com/aldi-trader-joes-parent-company-rumor-260999" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Aldi and Trader Joe&#8217;s</a> connection, for those who want to dig deeper. However, like Aldi, Trader Joe&#8217;s relies on separate manufacturers to make their products, placed in Trader Joe&#8217;s packaging. The practice is often called &#8220;private label.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trader Joe&#8217;s Gluten Free Labeling Guidelines</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trader Joe&#8217;s website states &#8220;If you see “Gluten Free”on a Trader Joe’s product, this means that the product has been validated to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten (or made in a certified gluten free facility). Individuals with Celiac Disease or Gluten Sensitivity must avoid gluten for their health.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some people, myself included, choose to eat some items not specifically labeled gluten free, based on ingredients. Trader Joe&#8217;s has stated in past emails, &#8220;We do have many products that are made in facilities that don&#8217;t process gluten, even though it&#8217;s not labeled gluten free. Generally, [the reason it&#8217;s not labeled]&nbsp;is because the supplier doesn&#8217;t want to pay for certification.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gluten Free Bread &amp; Baked Goods</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-gluten-free-sandwich-bread-1-1-600x900.jpg" alt="trader joe's gluten free sandwich bread" class="wp-image-7329" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-gluten-free-sandwich-bread-1-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/trader-joes-gluten-free-sandwich-bread-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trader Joe&#8217;s stocks <a href="https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/gluten-free-white-sandwich-bread-054292">gluten free white sandwich bread</a> and gluten free whole grain bread. Many people declare this to be their favorite gluten free bread.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They also sell gluten free bagels, and I especially love the &#8220;<a href="https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/gluten-free-everything-bagels-063164">Almost Everything&#8221;</a> Bagels. Not a fan of &#8220;everything&#8221;? They sell plain gluten free bagels as well. Every fall people look forward to the gluten free pumpkin bagels from Trader Joe&#8217;s. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is not listed on the Trader Joe&#8217;s gluten free list, however none of their spices do either.  However, I consume this, their baking powder, and cocoa all  without issue.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Call Between 2-4 pm</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This list is not exhaustive, and at the same time is not meant to exhaust you! I received my Celiac Disease diagnosus almost 20 years, and I still realize questions I need to ask. Hopefully this list of questions can help guide you into having a safe and delicious dining experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, I always suggest calling a restaurant prior to dining out. Ask staff how they accommodate those dining out gluten free, and use these questions as a guide. Restaurants generally experience a lull between 2 o&#8217;clock and 4 o&#8217;clock. Therefore, I suggest calling then.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dear Parent, are you overwhelmed with your child&#8217;s Celiac diagnosis? While doctors may tell you what gluten is, they don&#8217;t always tell you how to navigate this lifestyle. Today I&#8217;m offering 6 gentle reminders for this journey.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1-600x600.png" alt="" class="wp-image-11909" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-cover-updated-6-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Who Am I to Give Parenting Advice?&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have no children. Therefore it may seem odd that I&#8217;m writing a post trying to encourage parents. I have, however, listened to many parents with concerns and burdened hearts. In addition, I&#8217;ve been blessed to run a gluten free camp, and see firsthand how children have thrived and grown despite their Celiac Disease diagnosis.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Living with Celiac Disease is a fine line between trying to get people to take our health seriously, while also not allowing it to hold us back from living a full life. It&#8217;s hard enough as an adult, and even harder to explain to our children. Hopefully this post can encourage you and your kids that a gluten free life can be a good, eventful life.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-600x600.png" alt="Dear Celiac Parent, it's not your fault" class="wp-image-11895" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1-200x200.png 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-1-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, this is not your fault.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celiac Disease is genetic. And often I see parents who feel guilty, awful that they passed on this disease to their child. And while I can’t tell you how to feel, please hear me say that this is NOT your fault. We know 30% of the population carry these genes, but only 1% develop Celiac Disease. We have no idea why I have Celiac Disease, but my sister doesn’t. There is nothing you did to cause this, and nothing you failed to do to prevent it. Be kind to yourself.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-600x600.png" alt="Your Celiac child will thank you" class="wp-image-11901" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1-200x200.png 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-2-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, one day your child will thank you</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Living with Celiac Disease as a child is difficult. It may make them feel anxious and frustrate. They may feel they had to grow up way too fast. But one day, they will thank you for trusting your hunch that something was wrong. That you fought for a diagnosis and never gave up. One day they will understand that by gettting diagnosed young, they avoided years of unexplained symptoms.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-600x600.png" alt="Dear Celiac Parent, mistakes happen" class="wp-image-11896" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1-200x200.png 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-3-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, you will make mistakes.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just allow yourself the grace to know this now. You will obviously try your hardest to make sure that your child never ingests gluten. But we’re human. Mistakes happen. And you’ll do all that you can to make your kid feel better. You are not awful or careless. You’re human, and you’re learning. And your child is learning how to react to mistakes by how you handle them.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, empower kids to manage their own diet</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Parents want to shield their kids from pain. That’s natural. However, at some point, your kids will leave the house. Whether it’s grabbing something to eat with high school friends. Or totally on their own after they graduate. They need to learn how to keep themselves safe, and they need to see that you trust them to make good decisions.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-600x600.png" alt="" class="wp-image-11898" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1-200x200.png 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-5-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, it will get easier.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When your child receives a Celiac Disease diagnosis, it can be overwhelming. Removing any and all gluten from one’s diet is no quick and simple task. You’ll likely feel overwhelmed. Not sure who to trust. But with time, you will. You will become a better gluten free chef and baker. Your kid will find gluten free products they love. It. Does. Get Better.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-600x600.png" alt="inclusion doesn't always mean same" class="wp-image-11908" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-600x600.png 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-300x300.png 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-150x150.png 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-768x768.png 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1-200x200.png 200w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Dear-Celiac-Parent-6-updated-1.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dear Celiac Parent, being included doesn&#8217;t have to mean &#8220;same.&#8221;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, there are times where our kids won&#8217;t be able to eat the same things as every one else. Sometimes that means we bring a treat. Or do something special at home. My friend, whose two daughters have Celiac Disease said, &#8220;They won’t always have the same food. As long as they enjoy the food they <b>are</b> having; that’s all that matters.&#8221; <em>Ask your child what inclusion means to them.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Miss Cheez-Its? These brands offer delicious gluten free cheese crackers. I also included some easy to follow recipes so you can make them at home!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="503" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/gluten-free-cheese-crackers-1-600x503.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-87980" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/gluten-free-cheese-crackers-1-600x503.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/gluten-free-cheese-crackers-1-300x251.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/gluten-free-cheese-crackers-1-768x644.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/gluten-free-cheese-crackers-1.jpg 940w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Is Cheese Gluten Free?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, cheese is gluten free. While some may be concerned about gluten in shredded cheese, I have not seen one that contains wheat, rye or barley. Wheat by the Wayside wrote an excellent article, answering the question, &#8220;<a href="https://wheatbythewayside.com/is-shredded-cheese-gluten-free/">Is Shredded Cheese Gluten Free</a>?&#8221; If you have further concerns, buy bricks of cheese and shred them yourself. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Are Cheez-Its Gluten Free? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The original Cheez-Its are made by Kellanova (Kellogg). The original recipe is NOT gluten free. However since 2025, they have launched <a href="https://www.cheezit.com/en-us/products/cheez-it-original-gluten-free.html">Gluten Free Cheez-Its</a>. They are certified gluten free and contain real cheese. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where Can I Buy Gluten Free Cheese Crackers? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I list below more than a handful of companies that make gluten free cheese crackers or snacks. Each product links to their company website, and most should list their product ingredients. Some companies offer a &#8220;where to buy&#8221; feature so you can find these products near you.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do I Make My Own Gluten Free Cheese Crackers? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to list of gluten free cheese crackers available at stores, I included two homemade gluten free &#8220;Cheez-Its&#8221; recipes. One recipe contains grains and dairy. The other recipe is vegan and grain free. You will find these recipes at the end of the list. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gluten Free Eaters Not Welcome at the Party</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The above photo is from a Super Bowl commercial a few years ago, which made fun of those who need to eat gluten free. Luckily, the ad was pulled relatively quickly, but the damage had been done. Seen by adults and children, it reinforced society&#8217;s perception that we&#8217;re &#8220;difficult.&#8221;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-85413" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13-500x500.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/MI-Gluten-Free-Gal-13.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Children as Targets of Food Allergy Bullying</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I watched this ad, my mind thought of the more than 5 million kids in our country living with food allergies. Did you know a third of them,<a href="https://www.foodallergyawareness.org/education/bullying/bullying-facts-stats-and-resources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> almost 2 million children</a>, experience harassment every year because they have a dietary restriction? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Others taunt, threat, harass and ostracize these children because their bodies perceive food as a threat. Because the physical reaction is so serious, food allergies and Celiac Disease qualify as a disability, protected by law.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">But It&#8217;s Just a Joke&#8230;.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I see people comment this all the time. They say &#8220;no one would do this in real life.&#8221; However, there are plenty of stories where people HAVE done just that. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="https://www.allergicliving.com/2016/07/18/restaurant-owners-jailing-sets-precedent-showing-duty-care-allergic-customers/">Restaurant Owner Sent to Jail</a> Over Food Allergy Negligence</li>

<li><a href="https://www.allergicliving.com/2023/11/16/texas-football-peanut-allergy-incident-mom-on-what-happened/">High School Football Player</a> Changes Schools After Peanut Allergy Harassment</li>

<li><a href="https://snacksafely.com/2024/04/girl-with-severe-peanut-allergy-assaulted-with-peanut-butter-transported-to-hospital/">Teen Charged with Assault After Attacking Teen with Food Allergen</a></li>

<li><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-48148697">London Child with Dairy Allergy Dies</a> After Classmates Taunt Him with Cheese</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I want people to remember that there 20 MILLION people in the US live with food allergies. While you may not have a family member who lives with a food allergen, it&#8217;s possible that a friend of yours does. Making rude jokes about this topic shows you&#8217;re not a safe space for their family. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, a reminder that your kids are watching and hearing the content you consume on social media. You may hear a joke like this and not say anything. But children, whose brains aren&#8217;t fully formed and don&#8217;t understand certain consequences, are watching. If you think it&#8217;s funny, it&#8217;s more likely they&#8217;ll treat another kid this way. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">DYK Celiac Disease Is Covered Under Disability Law</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think that&#8217;s a stretch? Not really. A disability is <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/disability" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">defined as</a> &#8220;physical or mental issue that seriously limits one or more major life activities.&#8221; When you have a peanut allergy and its presence affects your ability to breathe, I&#8217;d say that limits a major life activity. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celiac Disease is considered one as well. When consuming gluten can affect your mental status, your hormone and nutrient levels, that is definitely a limit to daily function. Not to mention being able to go a day without constantly being on a toilet, it affects being able to hold down a job, etc.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-85412" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions-500x500.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/1-in-3-children-report-being-bullied-due-to-their-food-allergy-and-or-other-dietary-restrictions.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Food Allergy Bullying is Not as Rare as you Think</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first heard of food allergy bullying, I imagined it had to be rare. How could anyone do such a thing? To this day, I&#8217;m still affected by the story of Eleanor Garrow&#8217;s son, which I read in <a href="https://www.foodallergyawareness.org/media/user/bullying/Bullying-Food%20Allergy%20Bullying_DecJan2013_Living%20Without%20Magazine.pdf">2013 in Gluten Free and More Magazine</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her son, who has a peanut allergy, was attacked by another child and intentionally smeared with peanut butter. This could have been a deadly experience. Per the article, he struggled emotionally for quite a while due to that abuse.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">FARE, short for Food Allergy Research and Education, <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/bullying-prevention">reported </a>that &#8220;about <strong>one-third</strong> of kids with food allergies report that they have been bullied because of their allergies.&#8221; In a &#8220;2010 study by <a href="https://www.childrensnational.org/about-us/newsroom/2021/new-assessment-tool-reveals-1-in-3-kids-with-food-allergies-say-theyve-been-bullied">doctors at Mount Sinai Medical Center</a>, 21% of kids reported being bullied by a teacher or other school staff.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sadly, it&#8217;s not just kids that are the perpetrators of food allergy bullying. There are stories of parents of non-allergic kids threatening to coat the backpack of child with their deadly allergy. In another story, a parent encouraged their child to walk down the hall,<a href="https://www.parents.com/kids/health/allergies/food-allergies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> smearing peanut butter on the walls</a>, after the school declared themselves to be a peanut-free zone.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-90442" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house-500x500.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/bullying-wheat-flour-on-house.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adults Are Not Immune from Being Bullied about Their Dietary Restrictions</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adults are not immune from these threats either. A young woman with Celiac Disease shared in a Facebook group that her &#8220;friends&#8221; retaliated against her by covering her car and property in wheat flour. I can&#8217;t even fathom someone doing this. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And of course, those of us with Celiac Disease have recently been the topic of jokes in the entertainment industry. It has all added to the growing lack of compassion for those with food intolerances.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What <a href="https://allergicliving.com/2014/11/21/food-allergy-bullying-what-you-can-do/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">can we do to turn the tide</a>? How do we stop bullying and grow compassion about the issue of food allergy bullying?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="600" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-600x600.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-85410" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-600x600.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-300x300.jpg 300w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-150x150.jpg 150w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-768x768.jpg 768w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways-500x500.jpg 500w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/4-Ways.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4 Things You Can Do to Help Counteract Food Allergy Bullying</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Grow Awareness of Food Allergy Bullying</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First we should start by explaining how serious food allergies and Celiac Disease are. FARE has <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/bullying-prevention" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">created a PSA</a> that can be shown on television and in schools. It&#8217;s also important to <a href="https://allergicliving.com/2010/12/07/the-teacher-is-a-food-allergy-bully-2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">train teachers</a> how to address the issue appropriately. Sometimes teachers&nbsp;use words to address why certain foods are not allowed in a classroom that actually increase the possibility of bullying. This <a href="https://www.foodallergyawareness.org/bullying/bullying-facts-stats-and-resources/">article from FAACT</a> also includes resources. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Convince Children to Tell You When it Happens</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Food allergy bullying doesn&#8217;t get much attention because children are afraid to speak up. They fear if they address the issue it will draw attention to themselves or make the bullies angry. However, the only way to fix the situation is for your student to tell you. Constantly communicate with your child about how things are going. If they suddenly seem disinterested in school, this may be part of the reason why.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stand Up For One Another &#8211; Get a Buddy</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many times the &#8220;positive&#8221; light in food allergy bullying stories is when a friend stood up for a food allergic child. Like in <a href="https://allergicliving.com/2014/01/09/food-allergy-bullying-the-stakes-are-high/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Charlotte&#8217;s story</a>, having a friend keep an eye on their lunch box if they get up to use the bathroom can make a huge different. Standing up for one another also applies to us as adults. We need to be willing to &#8220;set others parents straight&#8221; when their speech can encourage misunderstandings or taking food allergies flippantly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Know Your Rights</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your child qualifies for a <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/section-504-and-written-management-plans" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">504 plan</a>, as food allergies and Celiac Disease are covered as a disability,. A 504 plan is a binding legal document between parents and the school. It outlines how your child will be protected while at school.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What About Legal Representation? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personally, I&#8217;m not usually one to seek out financial compensation. However, some acts are especially egregious, and legal representation may be needed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am a huge fan of Mary Vargas of <a href="https://www.steinvargas.com/">Stein &amp; Vargas</a>. She&#8217;s handled large cases, and their offices are in DC and Maryland. Notably, she represented the child at <a href="https://www.celiacjourney.com/post/colonial-williamsburg-lessons-learned-about-the-civil-rights-of-the-celiac-community">Williamsburg</a>, who faced discrimination because of his Celiac Disease. <a href="https://buckfirelaw.com/case-types/personal-injury/food-allergy/">Buckfire Law</a> in Michigan represents clients with Food Allergy claims. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As time goes by, it seems that society gets uglier and uglier. The greatest chance we have to make a positive change is to spread awareness and foster compassion. People pick on those that they feel are weaker. Let&#8217;s show them that we&#8217;re stronger, together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em><strong>Have you or your child been the victim of food allergy bullying? How have you handled the situation? Please share your strategies below so we can help each other.</strong></em></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Aroma Dough</strong> <strong>Gluten Free Modeling Dough</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A parent messaged me, asking about gluten free playdough products. Moms &amp; dads who follow our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/glutenfreemichigancamp/">Gluten Free Michigan Kids Camp Facebook page</a>&nbsp;quickly recommended&nbsp;<a href="https://aromadough.com/">Aroma Dough</a>. They offer scented and unscented doughs, all which contain none of the top 8 allergens. Created by a California mother whose child has Celiac Disease, it sounds like a great small business.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How to Order &#8211; <a href="https://aromadough.com/">Directly from Aroma Dough website </a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Crayola Model Magic</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Quite a few parents, including Jereann from Celiac Mama, stated they purchase&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crayola.com/things-to-do/how-to-landing/model-magic/">Model Magic&nbsp;</a>for their kids. Please don’t confuse this with the Crayola dough, which DOES contain gluten. Crayola does state that they produce Model Magic and their dough on the same machinery, but clean machines between each run. Made in the USA.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Whoa Dough</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A good friend shared this product with me, available at Target. Whoa Dough looks a bit stretchier than Play Doh, more like a soft putty. All 8 colors come in one resealable package, making them easier to find and put away. Whoa Dough is also Peanut Free, Soy Free, Egg Free, and Milk Free. It is made in China.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My friend Joy shared about this product, stating her daughter loved it. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Please know that Play Doh brand is not the only school product that may contain wheat or gluten. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Phone Apps</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Find Me Gluten Free</a>– The website and phone app is a lifesaver when you are traveling. On their website, you can plug in the zip code of a city that you are visiting and see a display of gluten free restaurants, bakeries, and stores in the area. When you are on your cell phone, the app uses your GPS location to show locations nearest you.
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>A WORD OF CAUTION.&nbsp;</strong>This app is meant to be a “starting off” point. Use it for recommendations, but always&nbsp;<a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/dining-out-gluten-free-questions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ask questions</a>&nbsp;about ingredients and food preperation before dining.</li>

<li><em><strong>Traveling and looking for a local resource? Check out my&nbsp;<a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/usa-gluten-free-bloggers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gluten Free Bloggers of the United States</a>&nbsp;post.&nbsp;</strong></em></li>

</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Word Of Caution on Grocery Store Scanner Apps</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In general, I do not advise relying on them. Product labels and ingredients often change. Those apps rely on input by a few persons, and mistakes can be made. Too often in Facebook groups I see people ask why the scanner marked something unsafe, when it is in fact gluten free. You are better off doing your research and being an informed shopper.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Warning About &#8220;Explore Michigan&#8221;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have seen an influx of posts about gluten free options in Michigan on the Explore Michigan page. THIS IS AN AI WEBSITE. It&#8217;s a scam. The owners are based in Bosnia, not the US. Their articles are full of incorrect restaurant information and wrong photos. I daresay their list of writers is also made up. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/miglutenfreegal/posts/pfbid02gTy3PqDyVw93iJfgMcgG7fsqHXGKgTvgMPYTZVSaWCgKPg421DLRpUG6WSTxNXfvl">See my Facebook post to learn more. </a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Be Careful Where You Get Your Information</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I try to keep things positive, and rarely try to say where NOT to get your information from. However, there is plenty of misinformation on the internet, and it leads to confusion and anxiety. There are a few things I want to make sure you’re aware of.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>A “health coach” is not the same thing as a registered dietitian. Even those who use the term “nutritionist” are not necessarily a registered dietitian. A registered dietitian has gone through many years of college, training, and independent cerification to show they know important material.</li>

<li>See a board certified gastroenterologist. See the person who has studied and specialized in the disease you are trying to alleviate. I wouldn’t go to an eye doctor to perform a hysterecomy. So please get your information from those who have spent the extra years of work studying it.</li>

<li><strong>Go for information, not manipulation</strong>. Be careful of headlines or articles that seem too good to be true. In addition, be cautious of sites that play on your emotions and lead you to feel fearful or consisently angry. Be wary of sites that use scare tactics such as “Click here for information others aren’t telling you.”</li>

<li>Please stay away from Gluten Free Society. Org. It is run by “Dr. Osborne,” but his personal website specifically states (in the small print) “<strong>Dr. Osborne is not a medical doctor. He does not treat or diagnose disease. Dr. Osborne is licensed with the Pastoral Medical Association.”&nbsp;</strong>(<a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/04/25/475165193/pastoral-medicine-credentials-raise-questions-in-texas" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Read this NPR article</a>&nbsp;which explains the concerns around the Pastoral Medical Association.) Mr. Osborne also falsely states on his website that corn, rice teff, milllet and buckwheat are not gluten free.</li>

<li>For more on avoiding misinformation, see my post on how to&nbsp;<a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/navigating-the-gluten-free-internet/">Navigate the Gluten Free Internet</a>.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To make a long story short, you are NOT ALONE on this journey! We are all here to help. What other Celiac Disease resources do you rely on? Please mention them in the comments below, and I may end up adding them to my post!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">LMCU Ballpark is home to the West Michigan Whitecaps. Started in 1994, this <a href="https://www.milb.com/news/midwest-league-overview">Midwest League</a> team is a High-A Affiliate of the <a href="https://miglutenfreegal.com/gluten-free-food-at-comerica-park/" type="post" id="87604">Detroit Tigers</a>. &#8220;The Whitecaps were affiliated with the Oakland Athletics before they joined the Tigers&#8217; farm system in 1997.&#8221; (Wikipedia)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Before the 2002 season [LMCU Ballpark] was known as Old Kent Park; the name was changed when the park&#8217;s title sponsor, Old Kent Bank, was purchased by Fifth Third Bank. Before the 2021 season, the Lake Michigan Credit Union renamed the venue &#8220;LMCU Ballpark&#8221;. (Wikipedia)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Danielle O’Connor, Food &amp; Beverage Operations Manager for the West Michigan White Caps, shared the following information with me. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The way we approach gluten free items on the menu, is whether the whole menu item can be considered gluten free. For example, our tortilla chips are gluten free. However, the cheese contains wheat, so we don&#8217;t list tortilla chips under gluten free because it&#8217;s not an item that can be purchased without the cheese. The gluten free menu focuses on items, while our full allergy menu focuses on ingredients.</p>
</blockquote>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Whitecaps-Hot-Dog-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-89805" srcset="https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Whitecaps-Hot-Dog-1.jpg 600w, https://miglutenfreegal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Whitecaps-Hot-Dog-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Please Tell Me More about Your Gluten Free Buns</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gluten free buns are kept in their packaging until given to the fan, and handled with new gloves. Depending on the capability of the specific area, some are kept in a warmer and some are left out to thaw. We have our gluten free buns available at all locations where the item is served, not just specific concession stands. </p>
</div></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Steps Does LMCU Ballpark Take to Prevent Cross Contact?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We always ask guests to state that they need to order a gluten free items. We do keep our gluten free items in a separate spot, but we also want to make sure it&#8217;s fully being taken seriously and there&#8217;s no risk of miscommunication between food runners and cashier staff. Staff are always willing to change gloves and use separate utensils. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We cook hot dogs and bratwursts separately from our hamburger patties, which contain wheat. Quesadillas are made on a panini press and not the flat top, so there is no cross contact there.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What About Those With Peanut Allergies?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They offer nut free games in May! Danielle O’Connor shared the following with me. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the nut free games is one of our school day games. So many kids take field trips and I love how we at LMCU Ballpark can provide a safe environment for the kiddos to come and enjoy! The week leading up to the peanut free games, we do a deep clean of the whole ballpark like the seating bowl and everything</p>
