Why Did You Choose to Open a Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurant?
I took over this restaurant, which was previously called “Outside the Box.” I continued their mission to offer a functional, integrative approach to health and wellness!
We are committed to offering a completely gluten free menu that is safe for those with Celiac Disease and other gluten dietary restrictions. We understand the freedom that comes from being able to eat anything on the menu. Gluten never has, and never will, come into contact with our equipment.
What Kind of Food is on the Menu at Grassroots Cafe?
Our menu mostly focuses on Macro Bowls. You can build your own bowl, and pick a base, a protein, and add fresh toppings. Or you can choose from our Chef Inspired Bowls, such as the Mediterranean Delight, Southwest Oasis (most popular dish!), Thai Ginger Cashew, and many more.
We also offer a Smoky Chicken Sandwich, and broth bowls made with rice noodles and fresh vegetables. (Similar to Pho.) For breakfast we offer gluten free avocado toast and gluten free, vegan waffles.
Is Your Menu Free From Add’l Allergens? (nut or dairy free?)
While dairy and nuts are present in our kitchen, we have dairy free, egg free and nut free options. All foods prepared at Grassroots Cafe are cooked in olive oil.
What Training Does Your Staff Receive About Safely Preparing Gluten Free Meals?
We have onboarding training and managers that are there to support + lead our teams!
Do You Offer Gluten Free Desserts at Grassroots Cafe?
YES, it’s actually what we are known for! We use certified gluten free flour blends and almond flour in our baked goods. Our options include muffins, brownies, scones, cookies and even vegan cheesecake!
Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?
We do not have a liquor license. We do serve locally roasted coffee from Dream On Roasters.
Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside?
In the warmer months we offer patio seating, and dogs are welcome there. In fact, all of downtown Marshall is dog friendly, complete with water bowls and treats!
What Unique Events do you have at Grassroots Cafe?
For the past few years we’ve held a gluten free Christmas cookie decorating event. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for other upcoming events.

Do you have parking on premises? Any tips on traveling to Grassroots Cafe?
We are in the heart of downtown. While there is street side parking in front of the restaurant, there is also parking in the back! We love being in Marshall. It’s super quaint – like Gilmore Girls in real life. Marshall is also home to the American Museum of Magic!
For those unfamiliar with the area, Marshall is located just off I-94, between Battle Creek and Jackson, Michigan. We’re located approximately an hour east of Ann Arbor.
