Hasbro Play Doh contains wheat and therefore causes an issue for those living with Celiac Disease. Luckily, there exist a handful of commercial brands of gluten free playdough we can buy. Find them below, as well as some homemade recipes!

A parent recently messaged me, asking about gluten free playdough products. Moms & dads who follow our Gluten Free Michigan Kids Camp Facebook page quickly recommended Aroma Dough. They offer scented and unscented doughs, all which contain none of the top 8 allergens. Created by a California mother whose child has Celiac Disease, it sounds like a great small business.
*Their website doesn't list any products for sale at the moment. It's possible that they are updating their website. And their Amazon page lists their products as "Currently Unavailable."
Colorations Wheat & Gluten Free Classic Dough - 8 Colors (2oz Each)
Colorations produces both a wheat based and a wheat & gluten free play dough. The gluten free playdough “does not contain peanuts / tree nuts, dairy, casein or egg. Additinally it does not contain corn starch, or latex.” Made in Great Britian, it comes in a 5 1/2 lb container, of 8 colors.
Crayola Model Magic Deluxe Variety Pack (14 Packs), 7oz
Quite a few parents, including Jereann from Celiac Mama, stated they purchase Model Magic for their kids. Please don’t confuse this with the Crayola dough, which DOES contain gluten. Crayola does state that they produce Model Magic and their dough on the same machinery, but clean machines between each run. Made in the USA.
Chuckle & Roar Whoa Dough
A good friend shared this product with me, available at Target. Whoa Dough looks a bit stretchier than Play Doh, more like a soft putty. All 8 colors come in one resealable package, making them easier to find and put away. Whoa Dough is also Peanut Free, Soy Free, Egg Free, and Milk Free. It is made in China.

Kinetic Sand, 6lb Bag with Red, Yellow and Blue Play Sand
My friend Joy shared about this product, stating her daughter loved it. Fellow blogger Brianna Wolin, who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease at a young age, stated she played with magic sand and liked it much more than Play Doh. The Spin Master Kinetic Sand brand states their product “easily cleans up and is wheat, gluten and casein free.” Made in Sweden.
Mad Mattr Modelling Dough Compound (Blue, 10oz)
One mom shared that her children loved Mad Mattr. She also stated “The small packages are perfect for school and they don’t dry out!” Websites state this product is wheat, gluten and casein free, and does not dry out like PlayDoh. A reply to a question on Amazon stated it contains no soy. Another statement said this product is similar to Magic Sand. Made in Sweden.
Made By Me Mixy Squish Rainbow Mega Pack, Includes 12 oz. of Pre-Made Air Dry Clay, 12 Colors, Dries Squishy & Smooth
This product was recommended by a follower. It appears it's availabe at some JoAnn stores, as well as online. It's made by Horizon Group USA, and I don't see it listed on their website. It may be a discontinued item.

Please know that Play Doh brand is not the only school product that may contain wheat or gluten. I find this list of Potential Food Allergens in Craft Supplies from Kids with Food Allergies to be very helpful. Celiac Mama also created a list of Art Supplies that Contain Gluten.
Of course, we also need to work about snacks and cross contact in the classroom. I love these Top 8 Allergen Free Snacks. When it comes to lunch time, I love this Flatbox lunch box that unzips into a placemat. We own two, and my husband takes his to work every day!

I would recommend staying away from Whoa Dough. I called to ask if their product contains a certain ingredient as they don’t list any ingredients on the package. The company was very unforthcoming and will not share any ingredients used in their product and just kept reassuring me that they do not have anything known to be an allergen to children but they would not tell me if the product contained the specific ingredient I was asking about or any other ingredients in the product. Makes me wonder what our children would actually be playing with when using their product.

Anybody have experience with any of these doughs with play dough toys? I’m trying to find one my daughter can play with without me raßhing when I play with or clean up.
Same here! Whoa dough is super sticky and doesn’t work with play dough tools or cookie cutters. 🙁
We use Whoa dough- my daughter(5) has celiac we have had no issues
The recipe with the conditioner… Some conditioners do contain gluten. I would check with the type of conditioner you are adding to the recipe before making it.
Hey! I have a question about the flat box lunch bag you have pictured with school resources- my son has a terrible time getting it zipped back together at the end of lunch – it takes forever! Any tips for quick reassembly? Or maybe I should just have him quickly shove it into a plastic bag or something?
There should be little tabs of fabric on the bottom. I hold on to one of those with one hand, and zip it up with the other. Other than that, I’d try having him practice at home, while he’s not rushed for time.
My son has a life threatening wheat allergy and we use Mixy Squish. It’s so much fun and never dries out!

Is sensory dough gluten free? I love the sensory dough kits, but my 8 yr old granddaughter needs it to be gluten free
You’ll have to ask the maker of the sensory kit if their dough is gluten free. I don’t think most of them are gluten free. I saw one listed on Etsy.
