Where is Ann Arbor?

Ann Arbor is a huge tourist destination in Michigan. Being the home of one of Michigan’s two Big Ten athletic teams, that brings a lot of visitors. In fact, the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitor’s Bureau estimates 5.6 million people visited there in 2014.

If we figure that 1% of the population has Celiac Disease, we could estimate that 50,000 people are in need of gluten-free dining options while in the area. So to help make your trip a little bit easier, here are my list of top Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions. (Plus two dedicated gluten free bakeries!)

Zingerman’s Roadhouse

My first mention in my Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant suggestions is Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Why? Because Zingerman’s is synonymous with the name Ann Arbor. The level of care that they take with their food prep is PHENOMENAL.

With dedicated fryers, toasters and waffle irons, it gives peace of mind while you’re enjoying your meal. I mean, look at those Bits & Grits Waffles?! I wish I had a plate of them right now. Or their a gluten-free fried chicken. Fried Chicken folks! While you’re in the area, make a pit stop at Plum Market across the street for Ethel’s Baking Company treats and other gluten-free goods.

Frita Batidos

I think I’m in love with Frita Batidos. Even though their “fritas” are served bunless for us gluten-free eaters, it may be the most delicious beef patty I’ve ever tasted. Did I mention that their beef is locally sourced?  Their signature fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer. That’s a huge thing for those of us with Celiac Disease.

Their batido milkshakes are wonderful. I could eat my weight in their cajeta, which is made-in-house salted goat’s milk caramel. Cover one of their sweet deep-fried plantains in the stuff and you’ll never want to leave. Add rum to their batidos and it truly is a happy hour. 

Condado Tacos

I’ve visited three different Condado Taco locations, and have had amazing meals every time. The majority of their menu is gluten free, and they have great protocols in place for dietary restrictions. Plus they’re a peanut free and nut free restaurant. Read my review. 

Juicy Kitchen

Ann Arbor is a place with many eclectic flavors and attention to healthy eats. Juicy Kitchen focuses fresh, local food with options for all kinds of eaters. Gluten-free? Check. Vegetarian? Check. Vegan? Yep, that’s covered too.

This delicious gluten-free stuffed French toast is cooked on a dedicated griddle with clean utensils and bowls. Cooks never share the egg wash from the regular French Toast. I highly suggest taking a bite with a bit of strawberry. 

Core Life Eatery

The Core Life Eatery chain recently opened a new location in Ann Arbor. Apart from the bread made off site, everything at Core Life contains no gluten ingredients. You can create your own bowl, or order one of their popular entrees. They also feature some pretty amazing beverages, including hot bone broth.

Anna’s House

This chain of restaurants originally started in Grand Rapids, and opened the Ann Arbor Anna’s House location in 2019. Gluten free meals are prepared in a dedicated prep space with dedicated utensils. While any meal here is stellar, their gluten free breakfast options are phenomenal. Pictured above is their breakfast lasagna.

Buddy’s Pizza

Buddy’s Pizza has many locations across Michigan, including one on Ann Arbor- Saline Rd. Read more about this business in my review.

Tasty Bakery

This 100% gluten free bakery serves up treats at their storefront, and at the Kerrytown Market. Customers also enjoy their treats at local Sweetwater coffee shop locations. To learn more about this unique confectionery, read my interview with Tasty Bakery.

Nirit’s Bakery

This Cottage Law business, Nirit’s Bakery, sells at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Everything they make is gluten, dairy, soy and nut free. 

Blank Slate Creamery

Blank Slate Creamery is an ice cream icon in Ann Arbor. They make all of their own ice cream, and many flavors are gluten free. Gluten Free flavors are clearly labeled. 

Blom Meadworks

Blom Meadworks sells naturally gluten free, alcoholic mead. They often have gluten free snack options, too. 

Other Ann Arbor Gluten-Free Restaurant Suggestions

1. Paesano’s
I’ve heard lots of great things about Paesano’s over the years. A friend recently had dinner there, and enjoyed gluten free pasta and even tiramisu! They even serve gluten free bread. I need to return to Ann Arbor just to visit this restaurant. 

2. Pilar’s Tamales
Pilar’s Tamales is a small Salvadoran restaurant on Liberty St. Corn flour comprises the base of almost every item on the menu. They do make a few non gluten-free desserts. I highly suggest the pupusas stuffed with cheese and loroco flower.

3.  Miki Japanese Restaurant
My friend Jen Burch, from Blue Bear Aware, highly recommended this Ann Arbor gluten-free restaurant option to me. The biggest issue for any Asian restaurant is the presence of wheat in soy sauce. She reports that Miki offers gluten-free soy sauce for their dishes. If you get a chance to eat there safely, report back so I know!

4. Totoro

If you’re in the mood for sushi, Totoro has many gluten free sushi options. Gluten free options notated on menu.

5. Stadium Market
Stadium Market isn’t really a restaurant. It’s a party store with a functional kitchen, selling gluten-free pizza and breakfast sandwiches Again, Find Me Gluten-Free has many reviews about this place. I sought the advice of Valarie Mates, the moderator of the online Gluten-Free Ann Arbor Yahoo Group.

She said that it’s “awesome.” Stadium Market reportedly has many gluten-free beers, and sells a selection of Udi’s products. If you can attest to their steps for preventing cross-contact, please let me know!

6. Salt Springs Brewery

Salt Springs Brewery is located in Saline, which is just outside of Ann Arbor. While I have not personally eaten there, I’ve been told they have a dedicated gluten free fryer for fried fish. However, I would check with wait staff before ordering, just to make sure. 

Final Reminders about Eating Gluten Free in Ann Arbor

As always, I suggest calling restaurants prior to dining to ask about gluten free food preparation practices. This allows you to get the best information without staff being distracted during a food rush. Luckily, Ann Arbor is a forward thinking city and there are plenty of options. You can even eat safely at University of Michigan dining commons! And last I knew, there’s a gluten free stand at the football field.

“I Accidentally Gave You a Wheat Tortilla”

I had arranged to visit a restaurant for a gluten-free review, a restaurant I’ve been wanting to try for over a year. This restaurant is known by many to be meticulous in taking care of food allergy needs. I asked many questions about their menu and their process before going. They offer gluten-free burgers, fries, wraps and more. I was stoked.

So imagine my shock when halfway through my meal. the owner realized I had been served a burrito made with a regular flour tortilla. I was speechless. I quickly pushed the plate away from me. How does one respond to a situation like this?

5 Things to Remember When A Restaurant Has Served You Gluten

1. Be firm in addressing the issue, but don’t be nasty.

The owner of the restaurant was horrified. Here I was, specifically to write about her restaurant. I had the power to destroy her restaurant’s image with one strike of a key. In that moment, I chose to simply forgive her.

Truth is, a friend of mine joined me for lunch that day. She has multiple allergens on top of Celiac Disease, some of which cause anaphylaxis. The owner of this restaurant did a fantastic job of keeping my friend safe that day. The owner showed sincerity in her apology and explained how she would make it right next time.

My friend Brianna Hobbs of Flippin’ Delicious shared how she handled a similar experience. “An important thing is to politely and calmly communicate what went wrong. Use it as an opportunity to educate them so that they can do better with their next diner.

I discovered a regular pasta noodle half way through eating my gluten-free meal. I was with family celebrating an occasion, so I only briefly discussed the problem with them that night. The gluten reaction in my body was horrible. Later I called the restaurant and talked to the manager. He needed to understand the seriousness of this issue and I talked to him about their procedures. I even offered to come in to help educate their staff. Remember, if we can prevent one person from having a reaction, it’s worth it.”

 2. Refrain from immediately using social media.

Immediately after leaving I called a trusted friend. I had to vent to someone. I made sure that it was someone I could trust, who cares about me but could also be objective. If a situation like this happens to you, you’re going to want to talk to someone. Do so, but do it privately.  I could write a scathing review on their Facebook page, but all of that external anger won’t change what happened.  Too many times people with Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity are seen as whiners. While we need people to take our disease seriously, lashing out in anger on business pages doesn’t always help our cause.

If you were to write about it on social media, I would use a forum that those with Celiac Disease or food allergies are likely to see. For example, I shared about the experience in a private gluten-free Facebook forum. You could also bring up the issue at a local Celiac Support group meeting. Write a brief post on an app like Find Me Gluten Free or Allergy Eats. Make sure the story of the restaurant and your gluten reaction will reach those who need the most warning.

3. Evaluate to see if you can do something differently next time.

Mistakes happen, sometimes on both ends. There were a few other distractions in the restaurant kitchen that day. That doesn’t excuse what happened, but it becomes a lesson learned. One thing that I failed to do that day was to verify that what was brought to me was truly gluten-free. Prior to eating it. You better believe that when I went out with my family that following weekend, I verified what I received prior to sticking it in my mouth was actually gluten-free. Never feel bad about asking questions about your meal.

My friend Keeley McGuire also had this good bit of advice. “It’s also important to remember you are the one with the power to keep yourself safe. While in Utah, a friend and I walked out of a restaurant. This was  after asking questions to our server and then the manager and still not feeling safe.”

4. A Gluten Reaction Can Be Emotional – Don’t make any major decisions

By some major miracle, I didn’t have major gastrointestinal distress that day. I still don’t know how I escaped that. The gluten reaction I didn’t escape was the brain fog and panic attacks. For at least a week. If you accidentally ingest gluten, I’d try to refrain from making major life decisions. Don’t all of a sudden decide to quit your job, your marriage, or pick a fight with your neighbor.

The neurological and emotional connections to Celiac Disease are real. Please know that if you have these type of reactions, you’re not alone. I still remember the article Chandice of Gluten Free Frenzy wrote after a similar experience. She was so honest and transparent, and I appreciate that about her. Celiac Disease is real and serious, and we need to be here to support one another.

5. Rest

In addition to the panic attacks,  I was exhausted. The next day I skipped my workout and kept the day as simple as possible. We have a lot on our plates in life today. You may not be able to call in sick or cancel all of your appointments. Do allow yourself the grace to not complete your to-do list.

Treat this gluten reaction as you would any other illness. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat healthy foods that are gentle on the stomach.  I take Gas-Ex for the painful gas I experience. Taking a bath often helps me with the cramping. I tend to get constipated instead of having diarrhea. Therefore, I keep Colace on hand. Some people take activated charcoal pills, but I don’t like the idea of using those or other “gluten relief” pills on the market. I try to use as little additional medications as possible and let things just take their course.

In Conclusion

Unfortunately, eating out can be risky when you have Celiac Disease. When a restaurant makes a terrible mistake, it can seem overwhelming. Try to stay calm. Tell the management what happened. Take steps to insure it doesn’t happen again to you or others. Most of all, take care of yourself. Vent to a trusted friend. Get some rest and don’t feel guilty about needing to take care of yourself. You’re pretty important.

Followers recently told me about Hola Arepa. The images on their Facebook page state that their entire menu is gluten free. Follow the on Facebook to see where they will show up next. It looks like they are often at Nelson’s Farm Market in Grant.

De Food Truck USA – Mesick (100% GF)

De Food Truck, located in Northern Michigan, offers a 100% gluten free menu. That includes fried fish, French Fries, falafel and more. Read more about this fantastic business in my review.

Tru Food Pizza Food Truck – Metro Detroit (100% GF)

Tru Pizza (formerly Renee’s Gourmet Pizzeria) started in Troy, Michigan as a 100% gluten free pizzeria. Since then they have added a location in Plymouth, MI and have recently opened a food truck. You’ll find it mostly in the Metro Detroit area, and in Ann Arbor on Wednesdays at the Farmers Market. Follow them on social media to see their schedule.

Ace’s Donuts – Royal Oak (100% GF)

When I asked Ace’s Donuts what kind of flour they use for their donuts, they stated they use rice flour. You can find them most weeks at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Follow them on Instagram or visit their website.

Veged Out Food Truck – Waterford (GF Options)

While Vedged Out is NOT a 100% gluten free food truck, they have lots of gluten free options. In addition, they’re the old vegan food truck I’d recommend. They have some amazing gluten free wraps. You can usually find them at Oasis Health Foods.

Burger Bus – Marquette (Mostly Gluten Free)

Everything on the Burger Bus food truck is gluten free, except the brioche bun. Even their fried chicken is gluten free! Gluten free buns are available for $2.50 extra.

Fire and Rice – Lansing & Ann Arbor (100% GF)

I discovered paella when in college. My college roommate has Spanish extended family, and she made this often. The blend of saffron and vegetables and artichokes tastes like home to me.

Therefore, imagine my ecstatic joy when I realize that Fire and Rice makes all their paellla to be gluten free. It’s like heaven in a box. Follow them on Facebook to stalk find them near you!

Kona Ice – Multiple Franchise Locations (100% GF)

Many dessert food trucks exist out there. However, this is the only food truck I know where everything is gluten free. True, Kona Ice basically serves snow cones. But how great is it to relive your childhood with creative flavors? Kona Ice is a franchise, so you can find them in lots of cities. I visited a truck while at a Frankenmuth Truck Rally, and the owners reside in Fenton.

*Hero or Villain – Detroit Area (GF Options)

Disclaimer. I have not personally eaten at this food truck. Their business popped up frequently when searched for Michigan gluten free food trucks. They offer gluten free bread for any of their sandwiches.

Staff stated they “switch gloves, clean and sanitize surface areas and use separate utensils,” when preparing a gluten free sandwich. Simply let their staff know about your allergen when you visit. Visit their Facebook page to learn more.

Shuck ‘n’ Ladder Corn Roasting – Metro Detroit Area

I ate at Shuck N’ Ladder while at the Michigan State Fair years ago. They serve hot, buttered ears of corn, with different, optional toppings. I felt so excited to find food at the fair that I could eat. I am unsure if their potatoes and walking tacos are gluten free. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. My husband and I stopped at Flights of Fancy in January 2025 for a late lunch. We enjoyed a great meal. In addition, I had ample time to talk with one of the owners and the head chef. The answers that follow are from co-owner, Kristen Robinette.

Why did you choose to offer gluten free items at Flights of Fancy?

As someone with Celiac Disease, I wanted to offer dining options with a larger variety than your typical restaurant. We can do so by using fresh ingredients, scratch made items, and working with allergy conscious vendors.

Is your menu also free from any other allergens? I.e, nuts, dairy?

We can tend to most allergy needs. The customer needs to let the server know, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Do you have a separate gluten free menu?

Our entire menu can be prepared gluten free with 4 substitutions. Those substitutions include toast points, flatbreads, burger buns, and pasta. We have tasted every substitution to assure the quality and flavor of each item is maintained. We advise our guests to always let the server know it is an allergy to assure extra precautions.

What steps do you take to prevent cross contact in the kitchen?

First, staff know to change gloves with every gluten free order. Gluten free meals are prepared on separate cutting boards with separate utensils. Staff use separate pots for boiling gluten free pasta.

Our fryers and griddle tops are completely gluten free. All gluten free meal tickets are handled with strict precautions.

What training do your staff receive on preparing gluten free meals safely?

We educate about the actual disease and severity. In addition, we do ingredient quizzes and food recognition tests. We assure they know how to order and note allergies as well as identify gluten free items in the window, to avoid issues. We do ongoing reminders and knowledge quizzes to keep them aware and conscious of all allergies.

Do you have a separate prep area for gluten free dishes?

Our kitchen has numerous dedicated gluten free areas, including all our fryers. We keep our gluten containing items in separate areas to prevent cross contact.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/ cooking?

We use canola oil.

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item?

Our entire menu. We have French onion soup, which is often hard to find gluten free. Instead of using bread, our gluten free French Onion Soup is topped with fried onions.

We also have delicious flatbreads. The gluten free crust is fluffy and tasty. The Cloud Nine flatbread is my absolute favorite. It has hand whipped alfredo, cauliflower, crispy potatoes, caramelized onion, and a truffle oil drizzle.

Do you offer gluten free desserts at Flights of Fancy?

Yes, we have many gluten free options and many more to come. We have gluten free creme brulee, warm cookies and a decadent sundae.

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine?

We have gluten free beer, wine, and cider.

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside?

We just built a patio and are certainly dog friendly. We will be hosting many dog-friendly events once the weather warms up.

What unique events do you have at your restaurant? Karaoke? Trivia? Concerts?

We plan on hosting numerous events. We are starting with live music January 31st from 5pm-8pm. Some other events include Galentine’s Day, Bourbon and Bonfires, restaurant week, and exclusive wine dinners.

How Did You Hear About Hop Hog?

I learned about Hop Hog in a Grand Rapids Area Facebook group many years ago. I finally had the opportunity to visit their Lowell location in the summer of 2024. Before dining, I had the opportunity to speak with owner David Harvey and head chegg Sheila Wilder. Below are some of their answers to FAQ about their menu and gluten free food prep.

Why do you choose to offer gluten free items? 

Owner David Harvey has a long culinary history. He worked in restaurants such as Johnny Carino’s, Gilmore Collection restaurants, as well as The Winchester & Donkey Taqueria. Throughout the years, people would frequently ask questions about gluten free and food allergy options.

He took it up on himself to listen and learn. He even made a study guide for the staff to be able to have more knowledge. It was very comprehensive and it took a lot of work to maintain as our menu changed wildly every season.

When David decided it was time to open his own restaurant, he knew from day one that he wanted to make gluten free and food allergy options the standard, not the exception. David told me “Running a restaurants is hard, and doing Gluten Free the right way is even harder. But it is so immensely rewarding.”

Is your menu also free from any other allergens? I.e, nut free, dairy free?

Our menu features BBQ, burgers, chicken tenders and fries. We also offer pasta. Our kitchens contain no peanuts, tree nuts or shellfish. No egg containing foods are cooked in our fryers.

What kind of oil do you use for frying/cooking at Hop Hog?

We choose not to use soy oil because of food allergies. We fry our food in sunflower oil, which has a hi-olec, which means it sheens off so the items do not stay greasy or get soggy. Sunflower oil also has a longer fry life, meaning with proper cleaning it will last longer.

Do you have a separate gluten free menu? 

We do in fact have a separate gluten friendly menu. However, our regular menu also highlights “gluten friendly” items. We use the term “gluten friendly” to distinguish ourselves from a completely 100% gluten free restaurant, such as Papa Chops. We know people may not necessarily like that phrase, but we think that it’s important to make that distinction.

What steps do you take to prevent cross contact in the kitchen?

We start by making the majority of our menu without gluten containing ingredients. The utensils that we use on the expo side of the line to put the sides on the plates are ALWAYS gluten free. When the server denotes that the gluten friendly items are an ALLERGY, the kitchen knows to be very careful.

Staff use all new items for preparing the food. One of the other things we do is we have a “bun warmer” that is used for the gluten items to toast the buns. When a gluten free order comes in, we toast gluten free buns in the oven.

Does Hop Hog Have a Dedicated gluten free fryer? 

All three fryers at both the Greenville and Lowell location are completely gluten free. That means anything deep fried food on our menu is totally gluten free. Neither location even has all purpose flour in their kitchen anymore.

Do you have picks or special plates that denote a GF meal?

What’s your most popular gluten free menu item at Hop Hog?

This is hard to pinpoint, since all of our smoked meats are gluten free. I’d say the favorite options among our gluten free clientele are the fish and chips, chicken tenders, nashville hot chicken sandwich or the fried pickles. Most gluten free people love the fact that they can have anything that’s deep fried. Knowing they can have fried chicken (tenders or nashville sandwich), just blows them out of the water.

Do you offer gluten free desserts?

Yes! We’ve recreated our famous carrot cake to be entirely gluten free.

Do you offer gluten free beer/ hard cider/ wine? 

We offer locally made Painted Hard Turtle Cider. If you haven’t had a chance to visit their orchards, plan to leave some time and visit them in person! We also plan to serve Groundbreaker Brewing beer. In addition, we also serve wine by the glass, and Michigan made Gypsy Vodka.

Do You Offer Any Weekly Specials?

On Mondays we offer Burger & Beer Night for $10. Unfortunately, we don’t have gluten friendly beer for this deal. We do offer Burger & Soda for $9, Burger & Wine for $11 and Burger & Cider for $12. (Burgers also come with house made chips.) However please note that there is an additional charge for the Udi’s gluten free bun.

We also offer a lunch menu. Our Lightning Lunch Menu is designed to be size appropriate and quick. In includes more than 10 items for $10 and under, Sun-Fri from 11am-4pm.

While we do offer family meal deals, we do not currently have a gluten free version.

Does Hop Hog Offer Catering?

We offer catering, and the majority of our catering menu is prepared gluten friendly.

Do you have patio seating? Are dogs allowed outside? 

We have a patio at each location. The Greenville location has a very large greenspace that includes an edible garden. Last year we grew tomatoes, zucchini, melons, jalapenos, rosemary, mint & more. We have full permission from the health department to use this produce at the Greenville location.

Lowell has a smaller but very charming patio. It did not get much use in 2024 as we were still getting used to normal dining but will certainly be used in 2025. They are both pet friendly to all nice and friendly doggos.

What unique events do you have at your restaurant? Karaoke? Trivia? Concerts?

The Greenville location has live music every Friday & Saturday evening from 6-9 pm. The Greenville location also has Keno & Pull Tabs. Keep an eye on the events tab on our Greenville Facebook page for future activities.

What additional things would you like my followers to know about your business?

The Lowell location is within the Social District, which allows you to take alcoholic beverages to go. Both restaurants brew their own beer on premise. While none of those beers are GF, we do offer GF beer from Groundbreaker.

The main thing that I would want your followers to understand is we are committed to offering an ever expanding gluten free menu. That includes reworking existing menu items to make them gluten friendly. Our baked beans is our latest example of that.

All menu development focuses on not just “good enough for gluten free.” We want our entire menu to be excellent, regardless of ingredients. For too long, people with Celiac have had to deal with substandard products with a hefty price tag. We want to do better than that.

Do you have parking on premises? Any tips on traveling to your business? 

There is ample parking at either of our restaurant locations. We hope you’ll be able to come visit us soon!

Where is Public House Food + Drink Located?

Public House is located in downtown Monroe, MI. Monroe is located on the western shores of Lake Erie approximately 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Toledo, Ohio, and 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Detroit.

Public House Food + Drink in Monroe is part of the Social District, which allows people to enjoy legal adult beverages outside. Outdoor seating is available at the restaurant, and dogs are even welcome to sit outside on the patio!

What Gluten Free Options are Available at Public House in Monroe?

Virtually all of our menu can be prepared gluten free. We have a dedicated fryer, grill, toaster, waffle iron and utensils. Our cooks change their gloves and follow all procedures.

We also have gluten free bread, house croutons and pasta. In addition, our pastry chef has at least 1 and sometimes up to 3 gluten free desserts. Let your server know of your gluten sensitivities and they can give you all your options!

Why did you choose to offer such an extensive gluten free menu?

We have a family member with a severe allergies, however it is to fish and shellfish. Over the years, it made us aware of ingredients in condiments, etc. For example, some Worcestershire sauces contains anchovies! So when we started getting requests for gluten free foods, we took it seriously.

What other dietary restrictions does Public House Food + Drink accommodate?

We accommodate dairy free, vegetarian and vegan dining needs! Customers can request Daiya cheese for their meal, and one of their popular vegan dishes is Asian Cauliflower.

Of course always ask our servers if you have a food allergy concern. For example, our french onion soup (as are all french onion soups) is made with beef broth. However some people assume french onion soup is vegetarian.

What kind of oil do you use for frying?

We use soybean oil for all fried foods.

Are there any other unique menu features you’d like my followers to know? 

We use local grass fed beef, and all of our sauces, dips and desserts are made in house.

We partner with many Michigan and local vendors whenever we can. Sometimes it is not possible to get the quantity of an ingredient we need from local purveyors, but we try to support small business. For example, we are able to get pure Michigan maple syrup from Curry Farms in Charlevoix. We serve coffee from local Frenchtown Roasters. Find a list of our partners on our website.

We have a dedicated pastry chef that creates our desserts from fresh, REAL ingredients; butter, eggs, cream, cream cheese, etc. And of course also creates gluten free AND vegan desserts.

I know you have many special events, such as Afternoon Teas and Food & Wine dinners. Are gluten free options available for those events? 

Regarding special events, yes we do offer gf options for all of them! In addition, we happily offer substitutions and additions to any of our menu items, although some may have an additional cost and some do not.

Do you have any connection to the Public House restaurant in Ferndale? 

People often ask us this. However, we are not affiliated with Public House in Ferndale.

Middlecoast Brewing – A Great Place for Friends and Family

My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Traverse City in 2023. This gave us the opportunity to meet up with one of my husband’s childhood friends for lunch. Middlecoast has a great, welcoming atmosphere.

Don’t let the fact that it’s a brewery discourage you from bringing kids during the day. They offer a kids menu, which includes gluten free flatbread/ pizza. They also have pinball machines and a foosball table for entertainment.

1. Why did you decide to start offering gluten free options at Middle Coast Brewing?

The gluten free initiative was born out of a happy coincidence. Our vendor brought in pizza crust samples. The one that was overwhelmingly preferred happened to be the only one that was celiac safe.

In that same season, one of our owners, Joel, had a loved one who was recently diagnosed with Celiac. That opened his eyes to the lack of tasty, affordable, Celiac safe choices that were available at restaurants.

I started working at Middle Coast Brewing shortly after they started offering gluten free flatbreads. I have celiac myself, so the owners and I worked closely together to expand what we could offer to the gluten free community in the safest manner possible.

2. What gluten free options are on your menu?

We clearly mark gluten free options on our menu. Currently, all of our flatbreads and the whipped feta app are gluten free as is.

However, because we also have a dedicated gluten free fryer, in combination with a great gluten free seasoned flour recipe, this allows us to offer gluten free variations of our fries, sweet potato fries (including the Zooted sweet fries), chicken wings, chicken tenders, and fried pickles. All of our sauces are gluten free as well. The Whiskey Ginger sauce is a fan favorite.

3. What are your procedures for making gluten free orders?

Both the front of house and back of house staff receive training on preparing gluten free orders. Staff know to ask if a gluten free free order is due to a Celiac Disease or a preference.

Food prep includes washing hands and changing gloves. We have a seperate gluten free prep space, including a dedicated gluten free fryer. In addition, we have dedicated cooking utensils. Gluten Free orders are taken to guests separately, to avoid mistakes. This is usually done by a kitchen manager.

4.  What kind of oil do you use in your fryer?  

At Middle Coast Brewing we use a blended oil that consists of canola, corn and soybean oil.

5. Do you offer alternatives for other dietary restrictions? For instance, do you offer dairy free cheese for flatbreads?

We do not offer dairy alternatives at this time. I do want to mention that our cauliflower crusts for the flatbreads, do contain mozzarella, so they are not dairy free even if you chose to have a flatbread without cheese. We do have a few options that do not contain dairy, such as the wings, fries, and gluten free fried pickles.

In addition, we do offer vegetarian options such as the impossible burger and a curried sweet potato patty, however these options are prepared on the flat top which currently is not celiac safe.

We are able to check ingredients on any item to check for other allergens when asked, and take dietary restrictions very seriously. We strive to accommodate our customers whenever/however possible.

6. Do you offer any gluten free desserts? If so, what are they? 

Yes! Every dessert option we offer at Middle Coast Brewing is always gluten free. We rotate dessert specials but more recently we’ve been offering different flavors of deep fried ice cream. Our most recent flavor, the deep fried double rainbow- superman ice cream with a blended fruity pebble and gluten free golden Oreo crust was a huge hit!

7. Do you offer any gluten free beers? Do you have hard cider? 

Our owners/head brewers are currently researching ingredients and recipes for the best completely gluten free beer options. We do have a variety of seltzers and a cider on tap that are all gluten free.

While our spirits are unable to be labeled gluten-free by law because they are distilled with grain, gluten is too big of a molecule to pass through the still when being made into spirits. For our May Tasting Menu (which is entirely gluten free in honor of Celiac Disease Awareness Month)- all of the cocktails offered will be made with spirits (tequila and rum) distilled without gluten.

8. Where’s the best place to park at Middle Coast Brewing?

There is street side parking out front along with a parking garage next door.

9. I know you have outdoor seating in the summer. Are dogs allowed? What’s Yappy Hour? 

Yappy Hour was a collaboration between Middle Coast Brewing and MI Pets Treat Truck, where the hour was both Yappy and Happy. Humans could enjoy discounts on their beverages, while also being able to purchase a treat for their canine companion at the Treat Truck.

We are looking forward to continuing Yappy Hour this summer. Yappy Hour will be held on Thursdays from 4 pm – 6 pm.

10. What else would you like my readers to know about your business? Do you offer Trivia Nights? Other events/ live music that people should know about?

We host a free Trivia night on Wednesday nights from 7 PM to 9 PM. On Thursday’s, we offer happy hour pricing all day long. We have live local musicians play on Friday nights from 6 PM to 9 PM, with live bands performing on stage the last Saturday of every month.

We offer event packages for private and semi-private events that include gluten free menu options for large parties.

Additionally, for the month of May, we will be offering many gluten free specials in recognition of Celiac Disease Awareness Month.

Columbus Gluten Free Lunch/ Dinner

Choripan Argentine Grill (100% Gluten Free) (Dublin, OH)

For many years, I’ve attended the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Celiac Disease Conference. It was during one of these trips that I visited Choripan Argentine Grill. EVERYTHING is gluten free, and delicious. Well known for their empanadas, they also serve fries, pizza, wings and more. 

Bi Bi Bop Asian Gril (100% gluten free) (Polaris Shopping Center)

This national fast casual chain serves Asian inspired cuisine, and all of it is gluten free. It’s a place where you can build your own bowl, or you can choose one of their suggestions. I love the purple rice and sweet potato starch noodles. 

True Food Kitchen (Easton Town Center)

I visited True Food Kitchen while I was in Texas, and loved every bite. Kitchen staff are well trained in gluten free protocols. I highly recommend the Charred Cauliflower, the Spaghetti Squash, and the Lasagna Bolognese. Cooper’s Hawk is also located in the Easton Town Center, and offers fantastic gluten free options. 

Bareburger (Short North Arts District)

True story. The first time I met Erica Dermer from Celiac and the Beast, we went to lunch at Bareburger. And I locked my keys in the car. Between that experience and their dedicated fryer, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Bareburger. If it’s on the menu, get the Duck bacon. Trust me on this. 

Condado Tacos (Polaris Shopping Center, Dublin + 5 more locations)

My friend Cindy from Vegetarian Mamma introduced me to Condado Tacos, and I LOVE it. (There are 6 locations in Michigan.) Most of the menu is gluten free. Vegetarian and gluten free options are clearly marked on the menu. Get the queso. It’s so good I could drink it. There’s a Condado Tacos near the Columbus Zoo, too. 

Cap City Diner (Dublin, Gahanna & Columbus/Grandview) 

While I’ve not personally been to Cap City Diner, it’s on my bucket list of Columbus gluten free dining options to visit. They have a dedicated fryer, with fries, chicken strips, fish and more on the menu. They even have gluten free desserts! I hear rave reviews about this place all the time. 

Molly Woo’s  (Polaris Shopping Center) 

Molly Woo’s, like Cap City Diner, is part of the Cameron Mitchell restaurant chain. Each restaurant in their chain takes excellent care of gluten free diners. One of their chefs came to the Nationwide Children’s conference and explained the precautions they take for all food allergies and dietary restrictions. I was impressed. Please note that reservations are recommended for all of their restaurants, because they’re so popular. 

Preston’s Burgers (North Market)

Preston’s Burgers is the sister busines to Bake Me Happy, which is a dedicated gluten free bakery. And yes, they have dedicated fryers and gluten free fried chicken. I’ve not been here yet, but hope to go the next time I’m in town!

Columbus Gluten Free Baked Goods/ Dessert

Bake Me Happy (Columbus & Dublin)

Bake Me Happy is a 100% dedicated gluten free bakery. I love their pop tarts, and their gluten free version of Zebra cakes. Truly, there’s nothing here that I haven’t loved. The staff are great, too! 

Cherbourg Bakery (Bexley/ East Columbus)

I’ve been a loyal Cherbourg Bakery fan for YEARS. Seriously. My first visit there was in 2013, and I visit this quaint dedicated gluten free and nut free bakery every time I’m in town. Technically it’s in Bexley, just barely on the outskirts of Columbus. (They also have a location near Cincinnati.) Cherbourg is down the street from Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, which I highly recommend visiting as well. 

Gluten Free Biscuits By Daddy-O

Everything at this Gluten Free Biscuit shop is gluten free. In addition to biscuits, they’be also added pizza to their menu. In addition to selling hot biscuits, you can also buy their mixes.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream (Downtown, Polaris, Dublin and 5 more locations)

If you’ve bought Jeni’s Ice Creams at your local grocery store, visiting them in person is even better. They have so many ice cream with gluten free inclusions, like their Gooey Butter Cake. Just let them know you have Celiac Disease, and they’ll scoop from a fresh tub. (Fun fact- Jeni’s Ice Cream Headquarters are in Columbus!)

Fully Gluten Free Bakehouse (formerly The Dipped Donut) – Delaware

Fully Gluten Free Bakehouse transitioned to a 100% gluten free bakery. My friend Cindy LOVES these donuts, and raves about them all the time. They even have dairy free options. It’s located in Delaware, which is north of Columbus. 

Places to Visit in Sylvania/ Toledo

If you’re traveling from Michigan, Sylvania will be on your way to Columbus. Don’t miss these great stops! There is also a BiBiBop Asian Grill in Toledo. 

Organic Bliss

Organic Bliss Deli and Bakery is a gluten free bakery and deli. They have great sandwiches, smoothies, and more. *Note- they do have non gluten free bread (made off premises) available for sandwiches, so be sure to clarify you want your sandwich made on gluten free bread. 

Natalie’s Cake Library

This new gluten free baker offers delicious gluten free desserts, and accommodates additional dietary restrictions. She also uses sprinkles made from natural dyes. She also has experience making dairy free, vegan, grain free and refined sugar free treats.

Erin Ann’s

As their Facebook page mentions, this business offers “consciously crafted ice cream, food, coffee & treats in the heart of Downtown Sylvania. Everything is dedicated gluten free, dye-free, soy- free & seed oil free with many other allergy accommodations.

Favorite Columbus Attractions to Visit
